Having lived in Sydney for over 8 years now, Chinese restaurants can be very hit and miss in both food quality and level of service. However, (Mathew's) Peacock Gardens Restaurant surprised us on both levels. The restaurant has managed to establish a strong local clientele, and one can see that the owners enjoy it - guests are greeted in a very friendly manner, and the owners and/or managers often sit down for a quick chat.
We ordered three main meals that were moderately priced. After only a short wait, the first main (San Choy Bow) was brought out on a small trolley, and the waiter immediately started to serve it on small plates for us. This was great, as it can often be quite tricky to do on your own. Whenever we had eaten what had been served, a waiter immediately came up to our table and prepared more so that we never had to do it ourselves. This extremely high level of service continued throughout our 3 mains - which we found astonishing for around $20-$30 per main! This was a level of service we had only experienced in Sydney's best restaurants, and it made the whole visit very pleasant.
The dishes themselves were very tasty, and generous amounts.
All this on a Saturday night that was extremely busy - all tables were occupied at all times, but staff never had a problem to maintain the service, and the waiting times between meals were only a few minutes each.
All in all, we will definitely be back - it was a well-rounded, very pleasant experience!
