“Delicious, Cheap and Cheerful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2012

This vegetarian Indian restaurant is a virtually an institution on Cleveland Street, Surry Hills. The TV's showing non-stop Bollywood videos are the entertainment to accompany the truly delicious food. There are daily "chaat" specials as well as a great range of Dosas and southern Indian delicacies. The dosa masala, a curried potato contained in a paper thin large rice pancake is an all time favourite and should not be missed. Maya masala is a cafeteria style eatery - line up, order and pay and the food is brought to you. There are two other Maya Restaurants owned by the same family, one across the street and the other upstairs, which are meat based and both more formal. Maya masala is always busy and they also have a large selection of sweets to take away. This is not a fancy restaurant, but wow the food is great.

“Indian vegetarian and sweets cafe”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2012

Maya Sweets is a vegetarian restaurant in Surry Hills, an inner city suburb not far from the Sydney CBD. It offers fresh Indian vegetarian food at a very modest price. Do not confuse it with the non vegetarian Indian restaurants nearby.

This is not a place for fine dining, but a large, clean air conditioned cafe. You order food at the counter, take a number and sit down to wait for the order to be brought to your table. You help yourself to cutlery, and water from a dispense with plastic cups. On the wall a TV plays Indian dance clips, whilst families, friends and local workers sit chatting around the many tables.

The thalis (metal plates with small bowls of food) are proclaimed to be either North or South India, but in reality they are similar and a kind of compromise, with the South Indian version adding sambar (thick spicy lentil and vegetable soup wth tamarind) and rasam ( a fiery thin soup). I usually give these a miss, and head straight for the dosais, which are huge, crisp and delicious. The plain dosai with chutney and sambhar is particularly tasty. Each day has a special meal available, in addition to the comprehensive menu, and on weekends groups gather for chats (snacks). Check out the website for the complete menu and other details.

Maya is renowned for Indian sweets. In a dazzling array in sparkling, chilled glass fronted cabinets at the counter, they are irresistable. You can choose a selection and take it home in a box. Mine never last that long.
