“Great location,bad hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2008

The Goldborough is a hotel well past its prime and well and truly due for renovation. The best thing about the place is its location, with very easy access to Darling Harbour, the monorail and within walking distance of the city centre (takes 15-20min). Be aware though that there is absolutely nothing open on weekends immediatly around the place, so you will need to go to Darling Harbour just to get a coffee.

Its fairly cheap at the moment to get a room at the Goldsborough and there is probably a good reason for that. The hotel is generally shabby. I stayed in a 1 bedroom 4.5 star apartment and thats what I thought I would get, unfortunately it was more like a cheap and badly cleaned motel room (arrived to find half chewed buscuits on the carpet and stains on the sheets). I don't mind places being a bit old as long as they are clean and well maintained, this hotel is not. The place is noisy as well and while the hotel guests seem to be fairly quiet its the permanent residents on the lower floors who seem to be the worst, especially on weekdays from about 6.30am. The problem being that for some strange reason the bedrooms face the open walkways.

This is not a good hotel and not good value for money even at the bargain prices being offered.

Location central to Darling Harbour was great.

We arrived on Christmas day to stay for two weeks, with a pile of bags and a boy on crutches. The staff at reception were not at all helpful, pointing us in the general direction of lifts and resuming their conversation. This was to be the level of service from front reception staff for the duration of our stay, which I cut short by a week.

The apartment was newly painted etc. The living rooms were spacious enough , and kitchen/bathroom well appointed with plenty of utensils etc.Bedrooms were basic, and clean, though furnishings did not meet the high standard I had expected after speaking on phone to staff prior to flight, nor did rooftop access promise eventuate. When I went to query this, the staff member at the front desk was nothing short of rude. The cleanliness of bathrooms left much to be desired with mould in tiles of both.

When paying premium rates for daily servicing, I'd expect daily cleaning. Servicing was erratic, some days not occurring at all, others a very basic job was done. One night, NYE, we were charged $800 for the apartment and the rooms were not even cleaned that day.

I booked this hotel over the Internet and then read the reviews on this website and I panicked, however, I must say I was more than relieved when we arrived.
We stayed with friends from the States who had a great view of the Harbour(you do have to be specific and ask for this). We had a room on the third floor with not such a great view but we really didn't mind at all.
The reception wasn't overly friendly but we were only there for one night so we didn'y have much to do with them either.
Our rooms was perfect for us and our 2 boys and I must say I had a great sleep, we heard none of the usual city traffic and our neighbours were quiet. The rooms were clean and quite nice.
We had a lovely swim in the pool and dip in the spa and the Gym looked great.
As for access if you park in the Harris St parking($16 a day if you validate with the hotel- bargin) you walk straight onto the 2nd floor, there are escalators and no stairs and easy with a pram. And my hubby was pleased as unlike other places in Sydney we have stayed it was really easy to find!!
The best part was the location 5 mins easy walk to Darling Harbour what more could you ask for in Sydney on the Harbour for under $200 a night?!?!?
We had a great stay here...please remember that not many people can be bothered to write a good review but if people are disappointed they will jump in with the complaints straight away. When booking here be specific with which rooms you want eg with a view etc.
You really cannot beat this hotel for location and price!!

I'm quite surprised at reading some of the previous reviews and can only consider we were very lucky with the apartment we checked into.
I agree that the reception staff weren't great, didnt really explain to us about the set up of the place, so we were a little bemused when we got out of the lift. They certainly didn't tell us about the lovely pool and gym area which we found by mistake on a hunt for a soft drink vending machine - we were leaving the next day so didn't make use of it!
The room was very clean - a seperate bedroom, a nice bathroom and the lounge and kitchen area which faced the street with a large vicorian styled window. Traffic noise was not an issue. The bedroom however faced the internal corridor, which was the main corridor to the Darling Harbour walk way. This gets quite busy with people coming and going, which does make a fair amount of noise. That really was the only negative during our stay. If I had known I'd have asked for a higher level. Facilities in the room included washing machine and tumble, a fully functioning kitchen, iron and ironing board - everything we needed.
Location wise, it was a short walk to Darling Harbour, no more than 15 minutes from door to door. It felt a safe area, and a steady stream of people late into the night. Darling Harbour is a hub of activity; restaurants, bars, clubs, the aquarium, wildlife centre, harbour cruise pick up points, cinema, coffee shops, shopping centre etc etc.
All in all it was great accommodation for what we needed - just a base to explore. I'd recommend it for anyone wanting the same.

My partner and I checked into this hotel for a work conference and checked out in dissapointment within half an hour.

The room we were provided with was totally different to what OAKS repesented it to be in their advertisements and resembled 3 class decor at best.

When we asked management to be allocated another room as the room was not to our satisfaction they declined and were abrupt, unresponsive and extremely unhelpful.

We checked out within half an hour of check in, and management were unwilling to refund our room booking fee or find us an alternative room.

We would reccmond avoiding the OAKS Goldsborough at all costs. There are much nicer and more accomodating hotels in Sydney.

My husband and I, our 2 year old son and 5 month old daughter stayed at the Goldsbrough this week and I have to say it was absolutely terrible.
When we arrived there was no pram access into the building and no one to help with our luggage which had to be carried up stairs to get into the building.
We were put into a 1 bedroom 4 1/2 star room on the 5th floor. This room had windows that did not lock and opened onto a bridge with 8 lanes of traffic. Very unsafe with a 2 year old! and I don't think that this could be legal. We requested that we be moved to another room.
The second room was on the 12th floor. Again, this room had windows that did not lock nor did they have fly/security screens. The room was very dirty. There was mould on all of the windows, under the dryer and in the bath/shower. The toilet seat was deteriorating and discoloured. The oven was dirty and the balcony rails appeared to be too wide.
The staff were unhelpful and didn't properly explain directions to the carpark or how to pay for the parking (the carpark was across the street in the next block).
The lifts kept breaking down with guests stuck in them. One man was stuck for more than 3 hours. The reception lied to one group whose daughter was stuck for more than 30 minutes telling them that they had not had any problems with the lifts. During our stay we spoke to 6 different groups of guests that had been stuck.
The garbage rooms are located next to the lifts on every level. They absolutely stank and these smells wafted down the corridor.
The spa was not working.
Our son had to sleep between us as we were terrified that he would get out windows or sliding door onto the balcony. Hence, we got no sleep.
We decided to leave early and contacted wotif who we had booked through. They managed to get us a refund for the nights that we didn't use.
Definitely not a 4 1/2 star room. We would not recommend this property as it does not meet basic safety or hygiene standards.

We stayed at the Oaks Goldsborough Apartments 24-30 December 2007 in a 4.5 star one bedroom. We were on the 8th floor with harbour view. The higher the floor, the better the view. 8th is probably the lowest you want to be.

The room we had was ok, a little small. It had a TV with 4 channels and a Dvd player. There was a washer/dryer (soap supplied), dishwasher (soap supplied) oven, stove and fridge. The pots/pans/cutlery and dishes were very basic, 4 of everything.

The good
- Location
The OGA is a great location, 2 minutes walk to Darling Harbour, the aquarium (very good) restaurants and 5 minutes to Coles Grocery store. The monorail station is across the street and the Pyrmont ferry is close by as well.

- Parking
The OGA has a deal with 2 parking lots, we used the Darling Harbour parkade which is 1/2 between the OGA and the harbour and indoors. We paid 16/night instead of 25 with the OGA. Speak to the front desk first to get your ticket.

The bad
- The concierge service was inconsistent in the quality of the information. They would not guarantee us a specific unit with harbour view when we reserved.
- The bedroom is on the inside next to the common corridor, you can hear people coming and going when in the bedroom.

The ugly
- You do not want to have an apartment on the backside of the building. They face a car park 10 feet away and a busy street is near one end.

  • Liked — The location.
  • Disliked — Noisy in the common corridor at night
