“Madame Butterfly in Botanic Gardens”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014

Absolutely Marvelous. Sitting outside in the gardens, enjoying the opera, a glass of wine in one hand, and with a backdrop of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House, as the sky darkened and the lights of Sydney came on. The production of Butterfly was fantastic, singing superb. Worth every cent.

““Madama Butterfly Opera on the fleetsteps in Sydney Harbour””
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2014

I had the opportunity to get rush-tickets for the opera. I paid 40 dollars and had the best seats ever; on the top rows right at the center of the stage! Just go to the ticket sales in the botanical garden at the day you want to see the opera and try your luck!
I was in luck further by the wonderful weather. As a tourist I did not bring my best suits, and with lots of people dressed up I felt a bit underdressed. It did not mind the others though.
I went for dinner on the operastage, where you can buy Japanese dinners. I got mine in a plastic container, which was a bit of a letdown, but it tasted very good.
I never saw Madama Butterfly before, and when the singer starts I am sold. Such a beautiful voice, I get tears in my eyes. the sound encloses everybody in a protective bubble. Nothing can touch us this evening! My nerves sent electric signals on the beat, like a orchestrating from the inside. Her singing becomes our energy, our bated breath hers. The upcoming sun is half a red ball in the harbour water, the moon a white ball hanging on a crane. The harbour and the view of the opera building really enhances the opera.
Afterwards I walked back at the outskirts of the botanical gardens, which is a bonus.

“"The Turk In Italy"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2014

Really enjoyed this production - Emma Mathews was tremendous and the set, singing, costumes made for an unforgettable night of fun. Particularly enjoyed the surtitles which were very cleverly done in modern, how shall I put it? - "vernacular" language - such a treat to see a company really enjoying the humour of the piece. It was a wonderful spectacle that started with someone on-stage, blowing up a lilo in time to the overture. The costumes were priceless with the ladies of the chorus wearing 1940/50's style swimming costumes, platform shoes and sunglasses and sunhats. The gigolos dancing attendance on them were also a treat to watch.
OK, not one of Rossini's best known operas but this production would entertain most people. And seeing inside the Opera House was an added bonus!
