“Good Value for Money!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2007

Good value for money. Sydney is an expensive place to stay. O'Malleys wasn't a luxury hotel but was clean and functional.

It is only a 2 min walk to the train station so is handy for getting in out out of the city centre or to the beaches.

It can get a bit noisy in the bar downstairs so If you are planning an early night take your ear plugs!

This cute little guest house was the perfect place to stay in Sydney. The rooms are small but beautifully decorated and clean. The breakfast is simple cereal, coffee, and toast. But the location is superb. It is so easy to get to the subway, downtown, good restaurants etc... And compared to other accommodations in town, the price can't be beat! Very cute little hideaway.

One warning - the music from the bar downstairs can be heard in your room. If you are a light sleeper this could be a problem.

Enjoy!

  • Liked — Cute, clean, and great location
  • Disliked — bar music can be faintly heard if your room

We booked months in advance. Travelled internationally only to find no lifts and we were tired. We hauled our luggage up four flights of stairs.
The Bed was like concrete (some people like that though), the pillows were awful and well there were loose door handles for the bathroom.
My hubby found old coke bottles under the bed which was abit off-putting. But we appreciated having clean towells daily and the complimentary soap/shampoo.
The music didn't bother us too much as I guess we are young enough to enjoy it; and knew about it in advance. However we heard exhaust fan noises all night from the shared bathroom next door; and really didn't sleep well.
The view we got was of a concrete wall and flats next door, which we ended up finding people there could see right into our room.
We did complain only to be pushed aside I guess, the staff we came across apart from a girl helping in the bar were rude.
I wouldn't stay again; and really wouldn't recommend it. it is however a gorgeous old building replicant of old sydney.
The Cross, really is an awesome place to stay; and really isn't as terrible as people think.
If you are going to stay here then go eat at 'Cafe Linda' it is reasonably priced, modest but affordable.

We stayed at O'Malley's on two occasions- mostly because it was a good price for Sydney and there weren't too many other options. The rooms themselves are a good size, clean.. and the hotel is located in a convenient area (if a little dodgy, be careful at night). The worst thing about it is, however, they neglect to mention there is a live band directly below your rooms that play every night.. yikes! We stayed in 2 different rooms during our stay.. it is possible that some rooms won't get that much noise, but stay away from room #211...we sang along (angrily, of course) to the whole setlist from 11pm to 2am, every night. If you don't hear the band, however, you may be kept up by the street noise and the extremely thin windows. So in other words, if you are a light sleeper, stay away. Otherwise, if you're willing to put up with it for the lower rates, everything else about it is just fine.

O'Malleys was recommended to us by a friend of a friend who spoke very highly of it. Our experience was not so positive.

We arrived after the hotel after 24hrs of travelling, only to find there was no hot water - the boiler was being fixed. We waited around 5hrs for our longed-for showers, but there were no towels in the room. The maid scolded us for not using the ones we were given!?

I found a toe-nail clipping in my bed, which suggested to me that the sheets hadn't been changed from the guests before. The room was infested with spiders - small, but annoying. The room was extremely noisy - the windows shook all night and the traffic noises were horrendous.
