“Great Hotel, Great Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

Picked Mantra on Kent from a Tripadvisor review and were really glad we did. A very smart, clean and well located Hotel. We had what seemed like a huge room - the bedroom was split away from the living space by some very stylish sliding doors - very chique. All in all we were delighted by the Hotel.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2013

Decided on booking this hotel after reading many TA reviews, which were mostly all extremely positive. So glad we did, what a gem in a great location.

LOCATION:
It is a 5 minutes walk from Darling harbour and even less than that from many restaurants, pubs & cafes. The are convenient stores around the corner, a bottle shop (wine & beer) across the street. Public transport is just around the corner as are the shopping malls and Chinatown.

ROOM:
We had emailed the manager prior to our arrival requesting a room on higher floor with harbour views. He did not let us down! What a great room we got (#2605), with harbour views on the 26th floor. The room had a modern look with a bedroom that had frosted glass doors which you could keep opened or closed. The bathroom had a great shower with awesome water pressure, washer & dryer as well which was very convenient. The "living room" had a stove, mini fridge, microwave and kitchen amenities which gives you the option to cook and have some meals in the room. Flat screen TV, couches along with a table and 4 chairs for meals. There is a safe in the room as well. The dishes were washed every time we got back to our room (much to our amazement), the room cleaned every day. The bed was very comfortable and there was good closet space with a small unit of 2 drawers, ironing board and iron.

HOTEL:
There is Wi-Fi available, however it's very expensive ($25 day). They do have package rates but still very steep. The lobby offers a computer free of charge with Wi-Fi available but only having one station can be bothersome as you have to wait to use it. There was a man playing online games one day which in my honest opinion should not be allowed, especially if there is only one station.....

We couldn't have asked for better service. Roz & Josie were awesome (as were others whom i forget their names). We are extremely happy to have chosen to stay at the Mantra and would most definately stay there again if we return to Australia one day. Thank you to Daniel Russell, the hotel manager for honoring our request. A smalll gesture that goes a long way...

This hotel is perfectly situated for shopping, outings, eating and much more. Our family of five stayed here for two nights in February 2013 and we had a two bedroom apartment. It was quite expensive but very luxuriously and very comfortable. It was so quiet and the views of Darling Harbour were stunning

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013 via mobile

I stayed here for 2 nights during the Easter holidays.

Check in was smooth and we had the room which featured a queen size bed with very comfortable pillows, with kitchen facilities which included a mini fridge, stove, microwave, toaster and tea/ coffee making facilities. There is also a safe and tv. In the lounge there was a dining table for 4 and a balcony.

There is also a washer/ dryer next to the bathroom, so great for those who are staying longer.

Bathroom had a spa/ shower.

There is no wireless Internet but they do provide a terminal at the lobby for the hotel guests.

The hotel is perfectly located in the middle of the city and only a 8 minute walk to Darling Harbour and 15 minutes to Star City.

We also dined at Sepia which was just behind us on the next street.

The ladies at the front desk were lovely and on the day we departed it was cold and raining, an employee named Luigi used his own initiative to hail us a cab. We encountered him earlier when we checked in and as the lifts were taking a while he asked us if we and he would want to share a lift with him. Also he can be seen cleaning the lobby very attentively!

He is a dedicated employee and customer service is his forte! They should put him at the front desk with the ladies!

I would definitely stay here again on my next visit to Sydney.

Dear gaynorchin,
Thank you kindly for your review.
Its great to see that you found your apartment comfortable and well appointed.
I noticed that you commented that the hotel does not have wireless internet. I can confirm that the hotel does have wireless internet in all apartments, along with a free intenet kiosk in the lobby.
Thank you for making the special mention of Luigi. I personally showed him the comment this morning and he thanks you for your kind words.
We look forward to welcoming you back to the Mantra on kent in the near future.

We stayed her for almost a week. The hotel is close to Darling Harbour and most shops in CBD, however, it is on the lower part of CBD, which means you have to walk up slopes to get the big shops and malls. We stayed in a deluxe room which was clean, but starting to age, with a few cracks here and there in the bathroom. Room on Kent was quite noisy at night and there was this loud beeping noise throughout the day and night, like a truck backing up. Very few channels on the TV, but since we spent most of the time with family in Sydney suburbs, we did not get to use it much. The rooms are pricey, but for Sydney standards, it was not that bad. However, nothing is included. Internet is over 25$ a day and the 5-day internet service costing 60$ has a download limit of 1.6 gb, which I was not told when inquiring until after we booked the room (Meriton offers free internet). Breakfast is 24$ (18$ if booked ahead)...it was good but few choices and empty serving platters were not always refilled. We did enjoy the Nespresso machine however.

Most of the crew was nice but some were plain rude and unhelpful, which brings me to the MAJOR point of this review. Upon check-out, we were charged 24$AUD for a "24-hour movie package" we had allegedly purchased a few hours after our check-in. As we were only 2 in the room, I verified this with the other person who was with me anyways the whole time and did not remember making that purchase. Besides, we headed out for the evening not long after check-in as we were with family, and we even have a store receipt about half an hour after the alleged movie purchase time, which means we could not have been in the room. I explained all this to the reception staff (a very rude lady and a somewhat more respectful but rigid gentleman). First of all, they could not confirm what was the movie we had purchased, and they were completely closed to hearing any arguments on our behalf regarding this purchase we had never made. After much discussion, we were still obliged to pay for this without even a hint on their behalf that they could be wrong! Basically, they were telling us we were lying and/or we did not know how to manage the TV system. This turned us completely off and makes it impossible for us to recommend this hotel to anyone. Number one priority when looking for a hotel is integrity in my book, although we often take it for granted. Mantra on Kent definitely lost points on that because of this incident, and the fact that we were told initially that we could cancel the reservation for a 50$ fee without telling us that the reimbursement would be made under a credit form for Mantra hotels valid for 12 months. Besides, when I called the hotel initially to check if we could cancel, I was told we simply could not and there was no 50$ policy, until I insisted and the receptionist checked to see that was true.
Basically, I would recommend to stay away from this hotel as there are a few as affordable options in the same area. I would also recommend to get a hotel more east so as to avoid walking uphill to get to the malls and shops. As for the fraudulent charges, I shall be disputing them with my credit card company...

Dear sishak,
Thank you for your review of the hotel.
I am pleased to see that you found the hotel convenient and clean throughout your stay.
It is disappointing to read your review and see that there were areas in your stay that you were not happy with.
I apologize for any noise issues you experienced. I am unaware of the beeping noise you are referring to but have asked my team to investigate to find the source.
In regards to the movie charge on your account, I have followed this up with maintenance and also the movie provider and have not found any issue with the charge.
As with most movie providers, a guest will need to accept the charge by pressing 3 seperate buttons to avoid accidental charges.
It is therefore very difficult to start a movie by accident but I would be happy to discuss this further if you would like to so that I can explain the hotels position.
Thank you again for your review and we hope to see you again soon.
Kind regards,
Daniel Russell

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

We booked this one bedroom apartment through Expedia and paid £120 pn p room without breakfast, which was AUD 20. Our room was high up, which I had requested but it was on noisy Kent St. We could have moved to a deluxe room the next day for another AUD 20 per night but decided to stay put. I asked to see a deluxe room with a harbour view during our stay and found it was worth the extra money and would definitely book one of those again, from memory it was room 2003 but check that out. The room layouts are a bit complicated so I would recommend, as the reception staff suggested, even if you book through a 3rd party contact the Mantra for advice on the rooms. The Mantra is in a fairly busy noisy area but it's in a great situation for everything, station, Darling Harbour, shops and eateries.

We found all the staff very friendly and helpful and the wifi was free and unlimited in the foyer, a lot of places we stayed only gave 30 mins. We would have still have preferred free wifi in the rooms but found that impossible to get in this type of accommodation during our 7 week holiday.

We would definitely stay in the Mantra again in a higher valued room and would recommend it. It's not 5 star but doesn't pretend to be, the bedroom was a little pokey and the kitchen not that well equiped but the staff were very accommodating in getting anything else you might need.

Room Tip: We would highly recommend The Red Lantern Vietnamese restaurant in the Surrey Hills, fantastic food...

Dear LadyLinda05,
Thank you for your recent review of Mantra on Kent.
Im pleased to see that you enjoyed your stay and found the hotel centrally located and convenient.
I can confirm that all apartments have double glazed windows which keeps most of the city noise out. Of course, the Darling Harbour side is the quiter side of the building.
We only have 3 room types so its not overly complicated but calling ahead always ensures a smooth check in.
We look forward to seeing you again in the near future.

The location is perfect for visitors to sydney as it is very handy to all public transport and sites.

We had to pay 300 for 1 night (Saturday) (including breakfast) which I thought was bit steep.

The breakfast was awesome and well worth $ 20 per head if you have to pay for it.

I would stay again if I could get a room for under $200 a night including breakfast.

Dear TheSuburbanCo...
Thanks for your recent review of the hotel.
Its greta to see that you enjoyed your stay and found the breakfast awesome, I'll be sure to pass on the feedback to the chef.
Room rates in March can be quite high but it really comes down to whats happening in the city that weekend.
There are many weekends where we will have specials for under $200 so we hope you will look to stay with us again on your next trip to Sydney.
Thanks again and we hope to see you again soon.
