I met some friends at Mary's Bar for lunch and drinks on a Sunday afternoon and thought it was fantastic. The entrance to the bar can be a bit difficult to find - you enter through the first door on Mary St after Kelly's and walk through a short corridor into the downstairs part of the bar, which opens up into a comfortable, airy space with a bar on the ground floor and table service upstairs. We arrived just after the bar opened and were greeted by the very friendly bar staff, and after buying drinks we climbed the stairs to the top floor for table service, where several tables were laid out ready for customers.
The drinks menu is extensive with a good selection of wines, beers and cider. Although the menu is very short with only 3 different kinds of burgers, 3 different sized serves of fried chicken and mashed potato with gravy available, the food was great. Everything is served as finger food in baskets with lots of napkins but no cutlery, so it's not a place to visit if you're not comfortable with eating with your hands. We ordered a selection of burgers, a basket of fried chicken and a side of mashed potato and everything arrived quickly and piping hot. The burgers were great, but the chicken was the stand-out - spicy and crunchy. The service was friendly and unpretentious and we found the waitstaff to be very helpful. The only downside is that the food is relatively expensive at around $14 for a burger and fries but it's not so expensive that we wouldn't go back. I have heard that the bar gets very busy at night but when we left at around 3pm on Sunday afternoon it was still reasonably quiet with several unoccupied tables, so that might be a good time to go.
