"Rosebury is the new hot-spot in Sydney!" my friend claims as we crawl along Gardener's Rd to Kitchen by Mike. I look out at the chained-up buildings and sad hamburger joints along the way & I have my doubts.
Kitchen by Mike has been set up in a huge warehouse - a former cannery(?) - in Rosebury - approx. 30-45 min from the city-centre and, once we have (finally) found it I am immediately convinced this place shows promise: First of all, the customers already mid-way through lunch are happily digging in to very generous helpings of tasty-looking Junk Chicken & Corn; or slow-cooked lamb; pizzas or tartine piled with roast vegetable, jalapenos & marscapone/mozzarella...mmmm... The salads & roast vegetables look mouth-wateringly good...plus there's a queue, a long queue...but everyone seems quite happy to wait their turn: and, in truth, the queue shifts pretty quickly...before we know it, we are settled at a makeshift table hoeing into the very same protein & veg I mentioned above: and it is really, really, good - definitely worth the wait....Take a look at the website http://www.koskela.com.au/kitchen/ for more background on the place....Basically, it's a canteen-style eatery (nothing flash about it - basic utensils, trestle tables etc...) but it's a canteen i wish i had near my work-place...as Im sure the locals will attest to. Open for breakfast & lunch only. Menu changes daily. Not sure that it's a tourist place - but if you are in the area you could do a lot, lot, worse.
By the way, the rest of the warehouse is filled with (v. expensive) furniture & homewares, certainly worth a walk around after youve stuffed yourself full of Mike's heavenly food.
.. is Rosebury a suburb of the future? I will leave that for time to tell...but this is a promising start!
