“BED BUG INFESTED”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2014

BED BUGS BED BUGS BED BUGS..... I stayed here for several nights and changed rooms several times because of the bed bugs situation. Every time it got mentioned to staff all they would do is steam clean the carpets and spray the mattresses with bug spray... great. These bugs are the size of a normal human beings small finger nail, they can survive a sledge hammer never mind a splash of bug spray.
One day i was desperate for the toilet.... there are approximately 16 toilets in this hostel and there was only 1... yes 1 that was clean enough to use. The place is very dirty as a whole and not suitable to even sleep for one night. And then we move onto cockroaches..... I hate cockroaches but they kind of came bearable towards the end of my stay because there were that many you just had to get used to it.
Have fun :)

Totally overpriced for what it is. You don't even get proper blankets, when you request blankets you get something that resembles a hessian sack. Toilets are DISGUSTING. The mess from the toilets even makes its way out to the hallway. Showers full of hair and very dirty.
Ants everywhere, bad smell. Bin not empty from the previous people staying in the room.
Camping is cleaner than this place!

Where to begin? Despite saying they offer airport pickup until 830pm, and confirming via email that we'd be picked up, when we got to the airport at quarter to 8 no one would answer the phone, and when we did eventually get a hold of someone they said it was too late to send someone to pick us up (even though it was only a little past 8pm). After arguing a bit they agreed to send a shuttle to get us.

When we got to the hostel the room we were put in was absolutely infested with bedbugs. The kitchen was similarly infested with cockroaches, and the hostel in general was in a state of poor repair. They had run out of towels, and instead of a pillow I got a blanket rolled up and stuffed into a pillowcase.

We requested a different room and got a room with no fan or ac whatsoever, a television that didn't turn on, and 3 of the 4 outlets didn't work.

The bathrooms were almost all unusable - four of the five toilets I went to were either filthy and lacking toilet paper, clogged, or the light was broken and the door didn't lock.

We had planned to stay four nights, but after one terrible night we spoke with the management and got a refund and found accommodation elsewhere.

Avoid this hostel if you can!

This is an absolutely average hostel. It's cheap, and you get what you pay for.

We stayed in a double room, which was quite large with shelves to place our stuff. There was also an elevator, which suited us perfectly, as we were placed on the third floor. Toilets and showers were dirty, maybe cleaned once during our 5-night stay. Our room keys were deactivated each day, so we had to wait in line in the reception every day to get them fixed. Annoying. The whole place was completely dilapidated, clearly an old building not being taken care of.

However, we were very pleased with the cafe. It was cheap and the food was good. The girls at the reception were super helpful and friendly, the boys - not so much. All in all, most things were just fine, exempt from the dirty bathrooms.

Dear Guest
Thank you for your review. We are upgrading, repairing and painting the building constantly. We also clean the toilets, showers, kitchen, floors and dinning area twice daily. It simply is not true that we clean so infrequently. Our hostel is very busy and often mess is left by other guests - hence the twice daily clean.
We are glad you enjoyed the cafe and hope to see you again.
Regards
Amanda

A friend recommend I stay at Elephant and this was my first hostel in Australia! It is different from many hostels in Europe & Asia cause it is so large. I thought it wouldn't be very friendly due to being huge but the hostel is full of Europeans who offer good advice. The hostel is basic and busy to cook. The showers have much hot water and get cleaned. I was in a 8 bed dorm which got messy due to others things all over the floor - but the price was good. Location is no 1 point.

We stayed in the private room. It was unfortunate that only a couple of showers and a couple of bathrooms worked. The rest were broken.
The cafe served pretty good breakfast and the staff was friendly.

Two friends and I came and stayed at Elephant, the staff were friendly, the rooms were nice and big and contained lockers to lock away valuables. It was cheap and easy to find, they provided a shuttle to and from the airport which made it easy when trying to get back and forth. Really good location. They also had organized nights out which made it a really easy to meet new people and see the night life Sydney had to offer. We stayed at a number of hostels throughout our travels in australia but this was by far the best one we stayed at, I would definitely recommend staying here.

Room Tip: 8 bed dorms
