“Perspective”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

Really, it is all a matter of perspective how highly you rate a hotel. For a traveller used to reasonably good quality hotels, then there is little doubt that Hotel 59 would be a disappointment. However, if you were a backpacker, then Hotel 59 may impress. I can't help thinking that most of the better reviews are from travellers who fall into the latter category. I was seduced by the good reviews and foolishly interpreted them as describing a small boutique type establishment, a real hidden gem. I was sadly (and hugely) disappointed as in reality it is very down at heel and attention to detail is not top priority - for instance, no bathroom cleaning during the three day stay we had.
The location was fine.
The proprietor was low-key but pleasant.
The breakfast is plentiful if you appreciate a "fry up" style.
I am sure this family run business is trying its best - but let's not kid ourselves that it is something it isn't.

We will never be a perfect choice of accommodation for some and understand some people can never be entirely pleased and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but to label and insult all our previous guests who left their possitive comments as backpackers who don't understand what a good quality hotel is, is very dissapointing.
I will address some issues, all rooms are serviced daily if a guest has a do not disturb sign on door we do not enter room.
Our breakfasts are always spoken about highly and yes we have to fry some products.
We respect that not all guest's want to be engaging and some just want to be left alone, if we sense this we do tend to leave them alone and be low key but are always there if they need assistance.
We will continue to work hard to provide good value clean accommodation in a convenient innercity location with plenty of cafes bars restaurants and lots of public transport close by, that is what we are.
I wish you all the best and if you are ever in Sydney again come by and say hi.
Regards
George
Before i forget guests with backpacks are welcome.

We arrived in Sydney after a long flight coming from Singapore 6 am. We did not get to sleep on the plane so we were quite exhausted at our arrival
Having our room ready George offered us to go to sleep for a few hours and then start our visit in Sydney. This was a huge bonus for our first day In Australia, as people here in Australia! Thanks again! (Of course we have been very lucky to find an empty room). We really enjoyed this pretty quiet B&B with an excellent breakfast. It is also very well located, walking distance from most important places. So we highly recommend this place as the price very reasonable, well located and nice boss who takes care of his guests.

Dear Tina45_12

Thank you for appreciating our efforts to have the room ready for you so early, on this occasion the previous guest had an early check out and we got in straight away to have the room ready for you, and i must say after meeting you we were so happy we did.
It was our pleasure to have you as our guests and look forward to welcoming you back.

Great location - 5 bus lines going to CBD - I was usually able to get on a bus in less than 5 minutes. I got 10 bus rides card in the convenience store on the corner and I was ready to go. Very good breakfast starting at 7 AM. If you leave late you can store your luggage inside after hours. Nice and quiet. Only minus - wifi strength weak in the rooms further in the back due to the location of the router.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013

I stayed at Hotel 59 for 4 nights. The room was pretty basic but has everything you need--a tv, refrigerator, wardrobe to hang your clothes, free wifi and a great hot shower. The hotel is in Kings Cross, which is a 15-20 minute walk to downtown. It is on a quiet street and as a single woman traveler, I felt safe and was 5 mintues walking distance of plenty of restaurants and cafes.

I spent 4 weeks in Australia traveling to many cities but the breakfast at Hotel 59 was by far the best! Included in the price, it is a huge savings considering how expensive food is there.

I would stay here again if I was in Sydney.

Hotel 59 was a pretty good base for our four days in Sydney. It's just ten minutes on the frequent bus to Circular Quay and others head along the coast to Bondi. It took us about forty minutes to walk to the Quay through the park and by the harbour side.

Our room was large and quiet. Breakfasts were generous and varied - you choose from the menu in the cafe George and his father run on the ground floor.

George is an entertaining and well-informed host whose advice on Sydney was spot on. Others, especially older Sydneysiders raised their eyebrows a little when hearing we were staying in Kings Cross, but things have changed and, anyway, Hotel 59 is well away from the lively bars though close enough if you want to throw yourself into that aspect of youth culture. At 63 we gave it a miss and were very happy with Hotel 59 and with George.

Hotel 59 is on the edge of the Knight's Cross area, considered by some to be the Sydney equivalent of a Red Light District. It does exhibit some of that, no worse than San Francisco. There is no significant noise from the party streets, the hotel is about a kilometer away. Everything is very relaxed in this area.

Bus stops are within 200 meters. Bus tickets can be purchased in the fast shop across the street. The buses take you anywhere in the city, plenty of maps available.
You will get an excellent slice of Sydney life in this hotel.

The hotel is well run, George, the main man, is very personable. Rooms clean, etc. Xlnt value!

If you can, take the bus to the Circular Quay (30 min). That is the departure point for almost everywhere Sydney, train, bus or ferry. The Opera House is 200 meters away. It is crowded also with street performers. Lotsa fun. If it's running, take the evening dinner sailing cruise (@US$100), beautiful harbor views, and for an extra coin you can climb to the crow's nest.

Room Tip: one floor of rooms, all the same, check if you can sleep with the refrigerator (on).
