“Very good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2007

Clean, comfortable, quiet, safe. Excellent breakfast. George the manager is very very kind. Walking to the Opera House takes around a good 1/2 hour, to downtown 15 minutes. By bus very close to everything. (Look at others travellers' pictures I took the same). Just a little old decoration in corridor and stairs but don't care, it is really a very good value in Sydney.

A great value hotel run by friendly and helpful staff with nothing being to much trouble for them, nice cooked breakfast is included in the price.On-Suite Rooms are clean and tidy.
Good location even if it's a little noisey on a Saturday evening.
About half hour walk from the harbour but very regular bus service next to hotel if you want it.

We stayed in Hotel 59 in August 07 for 4 nights. We had a warm welcome by George and his team! The place is economic with a various and delicious choice of free breakfasts. The hotel is very well located near to bus and trains or 20-30 mins from the CBD by walk if you prefer. So we really enjoyed to be there and we definitely recommend it!! Houda & Benoit J. (France).

This place is an excellent budget option for Sydney. It's in a great spot, near a row of smart bars and restaurants but isn't close enough to be noisy at night. Buses go from just down the street into the city centre or it's a 20 minute walk. The breakfast is cooked for you and served in the cafe downstairs and was of a really good standard.
However, the place seemed more like a B&B than a hotel. The reception is open for a few hours in the morning but when we arrived mid afternoon, we had to let ourselves in. Our room (number 9) was large, clean but randomly furnished (see pictures). It was above the cafe and next door to the 'reception' and consequently was very noisy from about 7am onwards. We could hear guests checking out, phones ringing, chairs and tables being dragged out onto the street from the cafe. I would still rate it as a good option, but maybe get a different room and don't expect a normal hotel-style reception.

Cant really add to the below reviews other than to say I agree wholeheartedly with whats been said. The hotel is small, very clean and has sufficient facilities to make the stay comfortable. The shower was fantastic! . We enjoyed the generous hot breakfast every morning which set us up for the days exploring. Although it was in busy Kings Cross the hotel itself was on a very quiet street and the most you could hear at night was police sirens, and occasional noises from the rooms above and beside us. (Didnt worry us tho). It is reasonably close to the city, we caught the local bus several times (stop just up the road) and even walked all the way back from the Darling Harbour area one night! (Felt safe as houses).
Thanks for a great stay George and family.

Hotel 59 is a comfortable, clean, convenient and friendly B&B which offers exceptional value in Sydney. I am a woman traveling alone and I stayed for 10 nights. My room on the upper floor towards the back was clean, comfortable and quiet. George, the host, was very friendly and helpful from the start. His suggestion on using the airport shuttle was excellent. After I spoke with some locals, I understand that it is much better (and sometimes cheaper) to take the shuttle instead of the train. Every morning, you get a cooked-to-order hot breakfast of your choice in the cozy cafe downstairs.

The hotel is very convenient as there are several buses you can take to Circular Quay. The Kings Cross train station is only two blocks away. I never felt uncomfortable walking along Darlinghurst Rd, the supposedly red light district. As long as you exercise common sense, there is nothing to worry about. You can walk to Elizabeth Bay and/or Rushcutters Bay which are very nice neighborhoods with lots of street cafes and delis.

There are many good restaurants on Victoria St which is also only two blocks away. I tried one of George's suggestion and was very happy. If you don't feel like walking, the Thai takeout place right next to Hotel 59 is not bad either.

There were certain amenities that the hotel did not mention on its website. There is a hot pot to boil hot water for tea, a refridgerator big enough to hold several cans of soda and/or a bottle of wine. Australian wines now have screw caps so you don't need a wine opener to enjoy wine in your room! There is a hair dryer, an alarm clock and a phone. I purchased a phone card to call home and it was very convenient and economical. There is also an informal "library" or "book swap" where previous travelers have left their books and you may leave the ones you don't want to bring back home.

In short, I enjoyed Hotel 59 very much. I highly recommend it and I will certainly stay there again when I return to Sydney.
