“Fabulous space for event”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 days ago NEW

We just hosted a big fashion launch party at Blue, and it was amazing. The space, the food, the drinks the service - everything was fabulous. We worked with the event manager Kristy, who was lovely and went above and beyond to make sure everything was a success. Couldn't be happier, and we look forward to hosting more events at this fabulous space.

Stayed at the Blu Hotel as it had a reasonable price point and is directly next to the water. The receptionists were not particularly friendly, but rather stand-off-ish, which was a stark contrast to the friendly bell-boys and the usual Aussie friendliness.
Our room was nice, BUT, and this was a big BUT, the noise or light insulation was non-existent. The overhead windows could not be darkened out, which meant that you had to rise with the sunshine... worse was the fact that you could hear EVERYTHING from the guests in the adjacent rooms.

This made the entire experience unbearable really and made us rather grumpy as we could not get any sleep. When we complained three times, they could finally move us to another room the next day, which was slightly better, but still not great.

The gym is small as is the pool, but nothing to quibble about here. Breakfast was very good. I cannot recommend the hotel for any business traveller or anyone who needs to catch a proper night sleep.

Dear Critical_Mind,

I note that you stayed at Blue in May 2014, which was ten months ago.

Since then the hotel has changed owners and operators. With this change has come a refresh in staff. From the majority of recent reviews I hope you can get the sense that things in this area have improved dramatically.

We will be fully refurbishing the hotel in a few months and will take onboard your comments for this process.

Sincerely,

Adam Taloni

This beautiful hotel is 15 years old and being refurbished in June and boy it needs it
The rooms are in such bad need of repair it was really a let down
Air con doesn't properly
Bath is joke to get into shower you need a step ladder and so cramped
Lighting rubbish and most not working
Tv very old fashion
Saying all that I'm sure that when they have spent 20 million on it, should be nice but don't come until then
Nice position to walk through park to city and all major attractions take about 15-20 mins
Nice try blue but need to do better

We stayed at Blue for nine nights in late December, checking out on Boxing Day. Booking a Sydney hotel from London six months ahead of time is tricky but luckily, we made absolutely the right choice? We would not have appreciated the touristy pressures of the big name hotels in the CBD but we just loved our view (across Woolloomoolloo Bay) of the yachts and the Royal Botanical Gardens and our wonderful 15 minutes stroll through the Domain when we were headed down town? We were also conveniently close to the less touristy area of Potts Point, where we had a couple of great meals. I think we managed to try most of the cool restaurants downstairs in the wharf although they were very busy with Christmas parties. Breakfast at Blue was one of the highlights of our stay: the buffet was wonderful, especially the very healthy smoothie shots & the delicious pots of tea? The two of us lingered for ages while our two year old ran around the quite extraordinary space in the historic building where Blue is housed? She was indulged by all the lovely restaurant staff, including Ray, Patriya & Krishna? It is almost impossible to express our thanks to the entire team at Blue who were not just patient but particularly good with our inquisitive daughter? Within hours, she was greeted by name daily & just loved all the attention? Darren at the front desk even found her a cuddly koala bear which is still a great favourite! Blue's biggest asset is, in fact, its team of young and enthusiastic staff, for whom nothing was too much trouble, even though a couple of things were beyond their control (the ridiculous size of the vehicle from the car hire firm, for example?) On the front desk, Ho Jin and Karen were consummate stars and the front door team of Raj, Anthony, Steven & Matthew were equally professional, courteous and amusing! Given that the hotel had only just changed ownership/management when we stayed, the staff deserve even more kudos? I do hope we can get back to Blue once the much-needed refurb has happened? The Taj group may well have baulked at the size of the undertaking - given that Blue is housed in a 100 year old historic, waterside building but fortunately for future guests, the Ovolo group seems to have the courage and vision to realise what a very special property this is? Let us hope that the renovations do justice to the wonderful building and to the exceptional team at Blue who all contributed to making the first leg of our big Oz hols so wonderful? A huge thank you to you all from London for making Sidonie's memories of Sydney so very special?

Room Tip: we loved our view over woollloomoolloo bay

Dear DeeJackson72,

What an absolutely fantastic review....thank you so much!

I know the feeling of booking accommodation on the other side of the world for a big trip. It can be a little daunting and you never quite know what you will get. I am thrilled that we nailed it for you!

Most of the staff you mentioned are still here. Still giving the same great service to our guests. Except Karen whom you know had her little baby very recently. We are all so happy for her.

The project we are undertaking is indeed big. Huge actually. But we do believe the wharf deserves it. The brief to the architects was to modernise our guest rooms and public spaces but to draw in as much of the raw materials used in our historic building as possible.

Woolloomooloo wharf is the longest wooden structure in the world, and coincidentally this 're-birth' is happening in the year that she turns 100. Very fitting indeed.

Please let me know when you will be coming back and we will ensure we are well prepared to 'wow' again.

Sincerely,

Adam Taloni

Despite being local's we stayed here in January and goodness it was wonderful.
A good hotel has a good mattress- this one also had good pillows!! and magnificent, professional staff.

Although it is a little pricey here, it is worth every cent. You do get what you pay for, it is a unique experience. Certainly a memorable one too. Love love love

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the water!

Dear Julie M,

YAY for this review!

I am so glad that as locals you made time to come and spoil yourselves with a stay at Blue. I am thrilled to bits of course that you loved your stay.

Do keep an eye out for our upcoming refurbishment. Later this year when it is completed there will be something to offer both hotel guests and neighbours alike.

I do really appreciate you coming to stay with us and for also taking the time to post this feedback.

Sincerely,

Adam Taloni

The Blue is a great looking hotel, with lots of unique and quirky elements to it which I really enjoyed exploring. It is also blessed with terrific staff - I found them universally polite and attentive from start to finish of my 3 day stay. From changing my room on arrival because I was unhappy about the weekend noise level from the restaurants below, to holding my bags for hours on my last day because of a late flight departure time, nothing seemed too much trouble.

It is such a pity then that these hardworking people are let down by the disappointing management decision of charging guests $15 a day to use wifi. In my month in Australia I stayed in a variety of hotels most less than a third of the price of the Blue and in every one of them I was given access to fast, reliable and free wifi. At the Blue, there is allegedly 'internet access' via the in-room ipad, but it is slower than early 90's dial up and after spending over 40 minutes trying to get logged on to my facebook account (via the dedicated facebook button no less!), and another 20 trying to do a simple google search, I gave in and paid the money for the wifi.

Come on Blue - don't ruin a good reputation by being cheap; free wifi should be a standard for your guests and you surely don't have to wait for your upcoming revamp to do it. Save your excellent staff the embarrassment of having to tell guests that they have to pay for internet access - for the price we pay to stay here, we - and they - deserve better than that.

Dear Morag I,

Thank you for staying with us, and for the review. I greatly appreciate the awesoem feedback on the staff. I will certainly pass this on to them.

Now, the Wi Fi - I hear you!

Australia is currently a mix of 'standards' in regards to Wi Fi, similar to Europe (as I found out recently on a fantastic holiday)! Some hotels have it as complimentary, some it is included, some have tiered levels of speed and price. The main reason for this is infrastructure and contractual agreements.

As you have eluded to, we will most certainly be refurbishing the property in a few months. We will also at this time be upgrading the Wi Fi speed. This will also be included in the rate along with breakfast, mini bar and other items under the Ovolo brand. As with current hotels that have inclusions such as Wi Fi, the rate will reflect the offering.

Currently we have agreements in place and specials through certain channels that we need to offer exclusivity for this inclusion.

Saying that, if you will be staying with us again before the refurbishment please contact me. I am sure we can look after you as a return guest.

Sincerely,

Adam Taloni
