“A great place to eat & stay when in Sydney”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2013

I'm going to promote a couple of places here - one being the Kings Cross Hotel bistro which has a range of meals on "special" most nights. We went there on a Thursday and it was $12 Chicken Schnitzel night and it was one of the nicest schnitzels I'd had for many years - even better than one in Vienna !!! Other nights I saw had curry and steak.
We stayed at the Holiday Inn just around the corner (called Potts Point for some reason even though I would have said it was Kings Cross) and booked a Harbour View Room with breakfast and the view from the 8th floor was something really special. Breakfast also was really nice.
The hotel is right by Kings Cross station - but we were also able to walk to all the places we wanted to see. It's in a fantastic position for being a tourist in Sydney.

“Kings Cross has almost become respectable!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013

Kings Cross is a popular tourist destination. They are seeking the Kings Cross of times gone by, they are looking for the Kings Cross that to be used to be the destination for entertainment excitement, Jazz venues, strip clubs, coffee shops, artist spotting and the meeting place of the underbelly of Sydney. Those days have passed. The El Rocco Jazz cellar has passed its zenith, the people who live there now are down to business and almost mainstream. They are there for the views and for the location close to the city. The developers have had their way most of the time. The suburb is divided by the cross city tunnel and William Street is hardly a street you want to actually cross on foot. Kings Cross is now easy to get to via the Eastern Suburbs underground. The coffee shops are still there. There is one by the fountain that is sensational, complete with crystal chandeliers. Exquisitely transporting and the coffee is good. The backpackers have a strong presence, but so do the junkies. The Wayside Chapel tries to help. Rebellious youth of yesteryear seeking a bit of excitement have been replaced by desperate youngsters looking for their next fix, or maybe just a spare part for their bong. There is a safe injecting room there if you need one, about which there has been much contention. The Fountain area has a weekend market which tries hard to be cool. The flower seller is cool. There are some really good restaurants here, one is Malabar, offers an excellent Indian experience. The top of the Cross has lost its lewd neon sign and in its place has descended a kind of respectability. High rise units with big price tags have replaced low rise older housing stock that created a special ambiance for this part of the city. Nearby is the Navy base. In the other direction is the Darlinghurst restaurant and coffee shop strip, and St Vincent's Hospital. Kings Cross is close to the Art Gallery of NSW, the Botanic Gardens, the Domain, Rushcutters Bay and the park. Kings Cross has changed but so does everything.

“Over-hyped, but not too bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

Advertised as the 'Red Light District' of Sydney, it is a street that has some shops, bars, restaurants, and cafes. It might have a few sex shops and sensual massage parlors, but I wouldn't go as far as to call it the 'red light district' of the city.

I tried one restaurant there, by the name of Fountain Cafe. I do not recommend it! Not very good.

“Excellent place to visit while in Sydney”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2013

Kings Cross has certainly changed over the years and is not quite so colourful as it's past history but still a great mix of people from all walks of life. There is good public transport and excellent places to eat along the streets, sidewalks, hotels, restaurants and there are still plenty of night clubs if that is your taste. The place is very safe now and the fountain is still worth a visit.

“Bourbon and Beefsteak!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

Great place to people watch in this famous/infamous hotspot of nite life! Out to dawn many nites of the week spent there and felt no trepidation in and around this hotspot. Good food, great entertainment and accomodation all in one package. Excellent spot, central to all this area has to offer. Common sense and streetsmarts helps, no doubt, but that can be said of any place in the world, including your own neighborhood.
