“Quality Small Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

Had an enjoyable 3 night stay here in April 2013 and liked the overall quality and quiet ambience of the hotel. Good continental breakfast. The management were particularly helpful regarding access to city and recommending routes to the surrounding islands and bays. Very accommodating regarding storing luggage until late departure time and arranging taxi pickup. Pleasant walk to city centre, Opera House and Bridge via Botanical Gardens but shortest walking route to city may not suit less able people as it involves sets of stairs.
Botanical Gardens bird life interesting.
Eateries within a couple of minutes walk from hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms at front have terrace and are in shade most of the day.

Thankyou for this succint and helpful Review.

Yes, the Royal Botanic Gardnes are really special, with some interesting wild-flis, and birds, especially the large white cockatoos, with their bright sulpher-coloures crests!

We try to visit the Gardens several times a week, as it is a really pleasant way to walk into the City, or down to the Opera House, and Circular Quay for the Harbour Ferries.

And yes, there is an extensive choice of restaurants in the Potts Point area, including five within a few hundred meters of "Simpsons" itself.

Thanks again for staying with us.

Keith and all of us at "Simpsons"!

Room: We were upgraded to the Challis Room which had a little balcony, large shower, fully tiled bathroom, all white suite with little washing line in shower. Soft, absorbent white towels aplenty!
Room is large, tastefully, cosily but with delightfully uncluttered decor. The bed is large, very comfortable and firm - dressed with crisp white bed linen and a luxurious throw which fitted in perfectly with the settee, armchair, carpet and drapes. A ceiling fan creates a gentle flow of air from the high ceiling (but there is a standard electric air conditioning unit, if desired). The floral pictures are elegant and interesting all depicting native Australian plants and all, appropriately are from the 'Simpson Suite from the Powerhouse Collection'. The whole room is lit by lamps - one on each side of the bed, a standard lamp near the flat screen TV, and, last but not least, a desk lamp on the side table against one wall. There are double sockets on each side of the bed which meant that iPhones,Tablet and mobiles could be charged during the day and night.

Cleverly, the storage unit incorporated the space for the ironing board, the fly killing spray (which we, thankfully, never needed to use), the iron, telephone directories and extra bedding, as well as the wardrobe with wooden hangers to properly hang your clothes and finally the tea/coffee making facilities and the fridge. They even supplied an umbrella, just in case, and again, in our case, unneeded!

The breakfast area is a bright, but never glaring conservatory. Breakfast comprised choice of three cereals, a range of fresh fruits options which varied each day; four different breads including English muffins and griddle cakes; hard boiled eggs, cold meats, cheeses and smoked salmon with capers. Tea and coffee - really good flavour and as much as you could drink. That's some Continental breakfast!!

The whole house is the epitome of what is meant by the phrase 'Boutique Hotel'. It is discreet, elegantly furnished, finished to the ultimate degree without being pretentious or contrived. It manages to be cosy but luxuriously chic. We loved staying and we haven't even mentioned to people.

The owners, Marie and Keith, are the kind of people you aspire to have in your life - helpful, chatty but never intrusive. Ree, the manager, is the kind of friend you'd wish to have - clever and fun, as well as efficient. They all gave us sound advice as to where to go and how to find what we might want. And their provision of port and sherry for their guests was only surpassed by their sweetness in marking a birthday for us with bubbles and chocolates.

It is perfectly situated about a ten minute walk from the Finger Wharf (where some famous people have properties - Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman). Another few minutes on, and you can be in the centre of the City or in the Botanic Garden depending on which direction you take. Ten minutes from there and you come to the Sydney Opera House and beautiful views of the Sydney Harbour bridge. In the whole time we were there, we only took a taxi once and that was at night after a wonderful cruise of the Sydney Harbour at night.

If/when we ever get back to Sydney, we would love to stay at Simpsons again. We'd recommend it to anyone who prefers to avoid the blandness of the chain hotels and to enjoy the personal touch of a loved hotel.

Room Tip: If what we saw of the house is anything to judge by, the rooms will all be of excellent quality.

Wowee!

What a wonderful Review. Thankyou Carmel.

We remember this lovely Irish couple who stayed with us recently, after visiting relations in Melbourne!

It is really nice of them to go into so much details, and we are very pleased that they obviously enjoyed their time in Sydney!

Thanks again for taking the trouble and time to review us so thoroughly!

Cheers...

If you are looking for a charming, personal, clean, tasteful small hotel, you will love Simpsons of Potts Point. The B&B is located right of buzzing Darlinghurst and Kings Cross in a very quiet neighborhood and in short walking distance to the Wooloomaloo waterfront and as such close to the Botanical Garden and the Sydney Opera as well as Circular Quay. Service and attention of the owners and their staff is impeccable and caring. Keith, Marie and Ree will do everything to make your stay comfortable and provide you with abundant tips as to what to do in Sydney and around. We stayed twice at the Simpsons with a few days at Ayers Rock in between and enjoyed different rooms, all very nicely furnished with comfortable beds. Check their web page and the video, it tells the story. Breakfast is ample in continental style, many restaurants and coffee-bars in the neighborhood will give you plenty alternatives to dine. While the place has his history, everything was functional, we felt very comfortable and definitely not in one of these cold business style hotels.

What a thoughtful Review, Dieter!

This couple had planned their trip well, and arranged to get the most out of their time in Sydney.

We felt that they had enjoyed their stay with us, and are glad that this was in fact correct!

Thankyou for referring to our website, and especially the Video link on the front page. It does give a good idea of us, and the neighbourhood. Worth the few minutes to watch.

We are the first to admit that "Simpsons" is not for everyone, and but if you do not need the convention-type facities of a chain hotel, are prepared to ignore a few chips in the paint and the furniture, and want to live as the locals do in a great neighbourhood, then "Simpsons" may be be the place!

Thanks again Dieter!

Cheers....keith.

Arrived exhausted after long flight and was so grateful that Ree let us into our room at 8am and even upgraded us. Immaculately clean, beautifully appointed home and rooms. Comfortable bed and strong shower. Bountiful breakfast. We're walkers, so easy walk to the Circular Quay and Opera House area via the Botanic Garden. Simpson's occupies a quiet spot on the street, but half block away are shops and restaurants. Had a very good dinner at a lively Italian place half a block away.

Thanks for your positive Review.

Yes, whilst our officail check-in is 3.00.pm., we do try to get our rooms ready as soon as possible, especially for our long-distance travellers.

However, if they are on an early morning flight, and their room is not ready, we do have a downstairs bathroom that they can use to "freshen-up". we can make them a cup of coffee, give them a local map and a geography lesson, and store their bags whilst they go exploring!

As these Colorado guys mention, it is a wonderful walk into the City, along the Harbour Foreshore and through the Royal Botanical Gardens to the Opera House and the City.

Cheers....keith.

This charming B&B is located in a quiet neighborhood away from the bustle of busy Sydney, yet with convenient access to the city highlights. Upon arrival our charming host gave us an introductory tour of the premises as well as an overview of the Sydney sights. Although the locals walk to town, we weren't quite up to that and took a short taxi ride. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, the breakfast is ample and nicely presented, and the always-available sherry and port are a delightful way to end a day of touring. Several nearby restaurants provide a variety of dining options.

We remember this lovely couple form Cailfornia who seemed to enjoy their time with us!

And yes, we always like it when we need to re-fill the port and sherry decanters in the morning, as it means our guests are enjoying participating in them!

And of course, a myriad of great neighbourhood restaurants and little bars to enjoy.

Cheers....keith.

I stayed at Simpsons for two weeks in February 2013 and can't say enough good things about my experience. The room was bright & comfortable -- good A/C, if needed -- and the location had a "neighborhood feel" and yet was only a short walk to the Kings Cross train station or a longer but doable walk to the CBD. The proprietors were extremely friendly and helpful. In addition, Simpsons served a nice breakfast, and there are many good cafes & restaurants in the immediate area.

Thanks Don!

A nice straightforward and positive Review. We like "positive" !

Yes, we are in a very nice neighbourhood, yet close enough to walk to the centre of the City in about 20-minutes.

We think Potts Point is " the place to stay when you want to be in the City, but don't want to stay in the City" !

We found Simpsons lived up to most of what has been said. We had our 2 yr old with us and they did try to accommodate our needs. It was a bit hard to get around the local steep streets and stairs with the pram with dodgy wheels (bring your own) and the taxis were unreliable. We couldn't find any kid-friendly places to eat near-by (zinc cafe is your best bet). The down-stairs areas of Simpsons was not kid-friendly, with many breakables within reach of a child so unfortunately we couldn't spend any time in those areas. Outside street noise was not too bad, but gushing plumbing noises inside the walls of the house were very bad in one of the queen rooms (also had a broken wardrobe) so Ree nicely moved us to a king room which was much better but then it had a sagging bed which was another issue. Just a few little things were a let down for us. We can see now that it was not the best choice for us, but all up still a peaceful oasis in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of the city - recommend it for more for older couples.

Room Tip: top floor king rooms in side corner to avoid plumbing noises.

Thankyou for your constructive Review.

Yes, it is difficult to find suitable restaurants for babies anywhere, but there are a few that we can recommend. Whilst we do welcome "hotel-trained" children, as they say, we probably are more suited to couples, or people with older children.

We were surpsied to hear of the plumbing noise being an issue, but of course were happy to move rooms. We have tested that King-bed, and whilst no previous guest had complained, we see that it is starting to sag just a little, so we have ordered a replacement. Nothing more important than a comfortable bed in a hotel! So thankyou for pointing it out to us.

These guests did explain to us that they very rarely came to Sydney, from the country, and were more used to staying in suburban motel accomodation with their baby, and as they said in their Review, "Simpsons" was probably not their best choice.

We do appreciate, however, their considered Review and for their honest appreciation of our good points! Thankyou.

Cheers....keith.
