I have stayed at a few of Sydney's 5 star hotels and this is definately not somewhere I would return to. On a recent stay at the Jamison where the staff welcome and greet you at the door, take luggage to your room and have ample parking available under the hotel this place was closer to 3 star than 5. There was no welcome, no sight of a concierge and as the parking station was full we were told to park 2 blocks away in a public parking station where we had to pay daily rates and where we could not take our car out unless we wanted to pay an hourly rate of $10-20.
When we arrived in our room we were very happy with the spaciousness and the comfortable bed but the furnishings were rundown, had obvious scratch and scuff marks on them and we had a lovely view of the club next door.
Breakfast was good, nice service here from staff and the buffet had a lot of variety.
Unfortunately the problem was with the staff. Whilst in the a bar within the building I badly injured my foot and needed bandaids. When my husband requested these from reception he was refused then questioned about his occupancy at the hotel. Only when he fought to prove he was staying did the receptionist offer to call to get some (and asked him to wait 10mins). When both myself and my husband were returning for the bandaids the receptionist was closing the doors to enter reception 5 feet in front of us. He turned, shut, then locked the doors and rudely ushered us out onto the street to walk around the block to the front door!! (My feet bleeding and no shoes on) When we got to reception the new receptionist knew nothing about bandaids but got them for us straight away.
When this was mentioned to the manager in the morning he was very apologetic and said he would investigate and call us in the next two days. We recieved a call from him SEVEN days later stating that the 'receptionist did not recall the incident but he was sorry anyway'. Working in this industry for 5 years that is the first time I have ever heard a manager of a 5 star hotel tell an unhappy customer that his staff don't remember the incident but he is sorry if it happened. He might as well have told us that as far as he was concerned we made it all up.
Not exactly what I expected.

If you are going to shop this is a great location but I would recommend you stay at the Swissotel or the Westin which are equally as close but 20 times better value if you want to feel welcome and comfortable.

We decided to be tourists in our own city for a weekend and chose the Grace Hotel since we got a good deal through the Entertainment Book. We were impressed with the hotel. It was well presented (the art-deco restoration has been done very well), the staff we encountered were helpful and courteous, the room (superior king) was very spacious, clean and everything was in good working order. Lots of in-room movies to choose from. Room service was efficient and the menu sufficient. Breakfast was very good (banana bread and garlic sourdough being the highlights!). Lunch at the Grace Cafe was very nice and they make the best Haigh's hot chocolates! Only disappointment was that the spa area was closed off for renovation. The sauna and steam room were great, but the pool was a bit small. The location is excellent for city sights and shopping.

Staying two nights here for the first trip to Sydney. The reception and room are beautiful with a good fusion of contemporary chic and colonial elegance.

The room would have been 4 or 5 stars if it wasn't the ugly toilet. They use fluorescence light! Bathroom ameninites are minimal but I guess it is quite a norm in many Aussie hotels.

The pub and cafes attached to the hotel are great by the way and you can buy grocery from convenience store across the road.

Location wise, it is good for Darling Harbour and shopping street nearby but I would have liked to stay in the Rocks area which I find the only more interesting place in Sydney.

We were in Sydney for a short visit to see a show, the Grace Hotel was a wonderful place to fill in the gaps between the show & a few tours. The staff were great, & the location worked well for us. Our room was a little noisy from activities near the hotel, but I guess Sydney is a busy place. The TV didn't work when we checked in, but they sent someone fairly quickly to fix it. Overall an enjoyable stay.

We stayed at the Grace on Easter week-end. The location is good, within walking distance to the harbor and Opera house and shopping. We did not find the staff to be particularly helpful when it came to information about tours or things to do. If the brochure wasn't on the rack then they weren't very well informed about the attraction. Watch out if you have to make a phone call to a mobile phone from a hotel phone. Our 10 min. call to our contact person in Sydney cost us $38 and she was 2 blocks away. When we complained about it to the management they just said that was the cost of calling a mobile phone. After staying for a month in New Zealand and Australia this was our least favorite hotel.
