“not impressed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2008

We stayed at the castlereagh for new year in sydney, the location is ok, the staff friendly, and very close to everything in central Sydney, the hotel is clean, but thats it. The room had only frosted glass windows almost at ceiling height to get some daylight in and a terrible central aircondition system that must date back to the 1960s, with an air-outlet blowing directly onto the bed, accompanied by a dreadful noise, and no way to turn it off or control it somehow. (Eventually we stuffed towels into the outlet to stand it somehow). Definitely not worth the price we paid (280 $) even considering that it was the NYE-rate.

My family were in from America and we booked two rooms for 10 days. The hotel is just two blocks from David Jones & 15 minutes walk to Circular Quay. It's a really pretty hotel with good service etc.
The only things I would complain about are the tiny rooms. I guess you can expect that in Sydney, but it would be easy to feel clausterphobic. Convenient parking is non-existent, even a drop off & pick up point for guests is not available.
We were pushing a pram and had to carry it up the front steps of the hotel... There was no warning on the website & if we had booked a wheelchair person into the hotel, I cannot see how they would enter.

My husband and I stayed there last month for three nights and were very pleased with the accommodation. Lobby is charming and the bedroom was nicely decorated with pretty lamps, bedspread and carpet. The matresses were comfortable and the bathroom was sparkling clean. Continental breakfast was served in the lovely, period diningroom and hot breakfast was only $8.00 extra. There was no view, but who cares really as we were out and about most of the day. Staff also are pleasant and helpful. Of course we would stay there again. We do try to find hotels other than the big chains when traveling overseas and have no interest in spending hundreds of dollars for one night's accommodation.

The reception area of this hotel is majestic, thats about as far as it goes. After waiting for what seemed like hours for the tiny old lift after we checked in, we made our way up to the tenth floor. I was excited and hoping for a view. Not to be.

Our room was barely big enough for the (just) double bed that we were supplied with. Lucky I wasn't planning to swing any cats during our stay. Our frosted window looked out onto the side of another building and the room was dark and dingy. The bathroom was also very small. We had no control over the air vent that blew freezing air into our room all night, along with the shrieks and yells of what I presume to be other guests staying at the hotel.

We shivered under the sheet and comforter we were supplied with as bedding and it was with bleary eyes we made our way out to the "ironing room" in the morning. Thats right, you don't get an iron in your room.

Whilst the location is great - don't stay here.

Please, please, stay somewhere else! This hotel should be rated 1 star only for its rooms. We had a tiny, dark and dingy room with a substandard shower room and no bath. Cracked and dirty tiles in the shower and the kind of thick glass in the windows with wire in it that was used in pre-war Nissan huts! The walls were very thin too as we found late at night, when the couple next door became vocal!

This hotel is full of "ole world charm" and its location is fantastic. If you want to be close to Myers, Queen victoria Building etc, this is the hotel. Rooms were OK and the bed was comfortable. Staff were helpful with queries.
I liked the decor which is welcome after the modern day hotels where you pay for their decorations.
I would stay at this hotel again when in Sydney due to its location.

This hotel is perfectly located right in the heart of Sydney's main attractions. Darling Harbour, the Bridge, the Opera House, the Botanical Gardens and Chinatown are all within a half - hour's walk, or a very short and inexpensive bus ride. The Sky Tower is within 3 minute's walk. The hotel is a reminder of former colonial times, and staff are welcoming and helpful. It is extremely good value for its location, the included continental breakfast is perfectly adequate, and the dinner quality is excellent, although with so many restaurants around the harbour, most guests eat out. We only had 3 criticisms. 1/. The windows are very old single - glazing, so you need to insist on a room away from extractor fans, if you sleep lightly. 2/. Breakfast is only served until 9.00 am, even at weekends. 3/. There are 2 bars. The ground floor lounge is very pleasant, but the upstairs one is more reminiscent of a cheap amusement arcade. Don't let these points put you off, though. We would certainly stay there again. We were especially fond of the main breakfast waitress, who was so friendly and helpful, even lending us her discount pass for the Zoo !
