“Good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2012

My friend booked a two bedroom apartment for my Hen's night at the Astral Residences. The hotel has pretty poor service. The staff at the desk are not very helpful. Example: No one chose to tell us about which lift to take to our room, we accidentally went up the lifts to the Astral Towers. No one really explained the parking situation (there was a gas leak and we could not use the valet parking).

Aside from their questionable customer service skills, The Astral Residences is a very nice apartment hotel. The corridors of the hotel looks retro, but the rooms are very modern and spacious.

Our room was on the 16th floor. The bedrooms were very spacious and clean. The ensuite had a television and a comfortable bed. The bathroom was clean. The other bedroom was a decent size too. The kitchen was great, there were all the kitchen necessities.

The room also had a nice balcony too. The view was quite spectacular. The room also had laundry facilities too.

Overall good hotel.

Room Tip: Request a quiet room

I booked this as a mystery hotel, and wasn't disappointed. The place is HUGE, and it buzzes all day with it being a casino, even to get to the restaurant you have to go past gaming tables and slot machines. The buffet breakfast was included, and was brilliant, the choice was fabulous, food to tickle all tastebuds. The evening buffet too was great and varied.
One crib was that we had to pay for WiFi, and it wasn't particularly cheap. But apart from that, the location was good, a short walk from Darling Harbour, the Monorail and a bus stop where the hop-on-hop-off bus stopped.

Room Tip: We were just allocated a room, i.e. no choice, other than double, but it was very nice

I stayed in the three bedroom apartment and I loved it. It was spacious and clean and the view was great. The kitchen was perfect for cooking while on vacation and had enough dishes and tools to entertain my HUGE Filipino family who were all in Sydney as well. I also liked the large living room and dining room area and the washer/dryer that makes traveling so convenient! My favorite part was the gym. It was so clean and well equipped with everything I needed. One wall is entirely glass which looks over the water so if you go right before sunrise it makes working out MUCH easier! It is in a great location because you can see so many places just by walking around. The concierge was more than helpful giving me maps and directions around the city. The ONLY downside was that the wifi was a little expensive, but that's minor.

Room Tip: Ask for a room higher up so you get a nicer view.

We are actually still at the hotel and checking out this morning but are so frustrated with the noise from building work that I wanted to write this review while still motivated to do so.

The location is great and the rooms are a good size and well furnished. Room cleaning is average at best - paper that had dropped between the bed and a chair was just left where it was and used coffee cups not removed, replaced or washed, I had to do that myself. But its the noise from the building works within the hotel that is most annoying. I have been here 3 nights - on the first two mornings hammering and drilling started before 7am but this morning, they started at just after 5.30am! I called reception who told me works weren't due to start till 'later' but they said they would speak to their manager. The drilling stopped after a while but the hammering continued, and then it all started up again at 7am. We were not advised of building works either on booking or check-in, but either way, it is absolutely unreasonable for this to happen at a hotel whose main purpose is to provide a place to sleep!

By far the worst and most expensive wi-fi access of any hotel I've ever stayed at in several countries. What is it with Australian hotels that they charge for what is usually provided free and works well in most other countries? In this era, it's the equivalent of going back to coin-in-the-slot electricity meters.

Stayed in their one bed apartment for the week on a business trip. No signage outside for taxi driver to locate the hotel. It's basically part of the star city, the darling hotel, entrance and shared lobby.

Check in queues were slow at 11am and painful after long flight in. Room was not ready but I was called once it was. I asked for a number to call in case they cannot get hold of me. There was no number I could call. I was amazed.

After Checking in 4hrs later at 3pm you have to walk a mile from reception to the astral residences. Taking the lift up I was hoping it was a nice unit. And it was. Amazing. Clean. Neat. Well layed out. Spacious. Had view of city skyline and part of the harbours quay. Beautiful. I could stay in the apartment for the whole week just watching the views change with the weather and sun.

Being an apartment you can make your own quick foods. I chose not to pay for breakfast and bought my items from nearby Coles and had my breakfast quickly or on the go or on the balcony while enjoying the morning sunrise views. Just make sure to buy a roll of paper towels to help with kitchen clean up and drying hands. All this is easy on a business trip.

I had room service pizza one day and it was great value. Downstairs you can get lots of different foods from the food court (try Durghen which is a middle east eatery. Lamb mince kebab on skewer is a must have). Prices are not super cheap but priced right for the location. You get full cutlery set at a food court which is quite a luxury. There are also other restuarants at the star city complex for more elegant tastes.

Rooms are cleaned daily and a good job is done. Don't be surprised with by angle of walls as it's not a rectangle setup which adds to the ambience. The apartment has nice deal to work from while you leave your curtains and sliding door open to enjoy the occasional glance at the views. Some units have great privacy. Block out curtains are effective. Overall rooms are well equipped for a pleasant long term home. Kitchen may miss some basics but Coles can close that gap.

Concierge Services are great even if a mile away. (50m walk I think). All staff are friendly except for the casino security staff who are lots more serious. It is also easy to walk around to get into better views. Bus stops nearby. Trains intergrated with casino. Short walk to habourside resturants and entertainment. As a foreign visitor. It's just a wow factor for the whole package.

Good choice to stay here. Try to get an apartment in high floor with city view. Spectacular. Check out the pictures I uploaded. If you not a minibar person, be careful as it's very tempting as there is large variety to choose from.

For its central location and nearby to traffic, the apartment was very quiet and far removed from noise. The decor was fine and it was clean...very important. Housekeeping staff were courteous and efficient , working around us with no fuss at all. Great.

Needless to ay, the view over the bay to the Harbour Bridge is awesome and sitting on the balcony enjoying the late afternoon breeze is an added plus.

As for food, numerous eateries in the Star complex and the nearby Darling Harbour and Harbourside gives more than enough choices to satisfy one's tastes

Room Tip: make sure to get one where the balcony opens to the view of the Bridge
