Fantastic location, great service, 10 min walk to opera hse, great rooms with a good selection of food, only spent two nights to celebrate friend birthday & would have loved to have stayed longer. within a short walk to all the main attractions in sydney city centre, very professional service.

Sir Stamford on Circular Quay was specifically selected for a 70th birthday celebration and it fitted the bill perfectly. The hotel building combines the heritage Health Department building and a 1970's wing - not much to look at from the outside, but has spacious rooms decked in old-world furnishings. If reproduction french-polished furniture, plush upholstery and wallpaper are your thing, this hotel will fit the bill. Higher floors offer views of Sydney Harbour (not the Bridge) and Opera House, over the top of the Botanic Gardens which is across the road.

Its timber-panelled foyer, dining, bar and library all follow the theme of european old-world and offer a comfortable retreat from the very busy Circular Quay area which is only the next street away. Easy stroll downhill to the Opera House, 10 minutes to the art galleries and Rocks area meant that touring by foot was easy. This area is perfect for those who want to see the Bridge, Opera House and easily access the ferries and harbour tours. Further away however, is Darling Harbour, Chinatown and the CBD shopping area, which was better accessed using buses, ferries and monorail.

Breakfast was laid out as an opulent buffet, but offered a standard Aussie cooked breakfast in addition to a selection of cold meats, cereal, fruit and pastries. No asian brekkie dishes here, nor on-hand chefs to cook up your favourite omelette. Ours was included in tariff, which made it all the more enjoyable.

The piano bar in the older section is atmospheric with it panelling, Steinway and oil paintings; it offers a fussy tea experience, makes an almost acceptable coffee and good for a drink after a night out. Not cheap though. Neither is their internet facility.

We enjoyed their small 5th-floor rooftop pool and sauna; the gym is well kitted out and the outdoor terrace pleasant enough. The extensive use of energy-saver lightbulbs in every fixture and lamp detracts from the room atmosphere, giving everyone a pallid grey fluro glow - but hey, it's poignant to point out that we were staying here during Earth Hour. The hotel also smells old.

Its warmth is to be found in its old world plushness and from the friendly service we experienced from all the staff (especially in the bar). Definitely not for the aficionados of minimalist decor, nor for those who expect pristine spaces from their 5 star hotels. Whilst not an overly opulent experience, nor particularly extensive in facility, Sir Stamford can be recommended for location, pleasant hospitality and spacious rooms.

Stayed only for 1-night (alas) on way back home from New Zealand. What a great find. Opera House, Circular Quay and The Rocks all within few minutes. Staff were the best we have come across in a long time. Room was good size and overlooked the park.

Elegant rooms that are different and more luxurious than the usual hotels. Gracious service. Nice little touches. Great location. The views aren't as good as next door at the Intercontinental or other highrise hotels, but the juliette balconies are a lovely touch overlooking the Botanic Gardens if you book on that side. It's a pity the doors don't open though.

Overall, this is a wonderful hotel, with great value if you can get a good rate.

We had booked their jet lag recovery programme as we were arriving at Sydney Airport at 7.00 am. When we arrived at 8.30am, we were told our room was not ready and were asked to wait in the lounge for 10 minutes. Within a few minutes we were shown to our room, which was large with a settee, armchair, coffee table and desk. The bathroom was huge, with 2 wash bowls and a shower big enought to have a party in!

Our room also had a small balcony which overlooked Circular Quay. Whilst we were there, the cruise liner Queen Victoria was moored there and in view from our room.

The continental breakfast was adequate, but there was a not a lot of choice compared to other hotels.

The concierge staff were helpful in recommending places to visit and eat.

The botanic gardens are just across the road from hotel and well worth a visit, if only to see the giant veggie bats, hanging from the trees.

Although we didn't swim in the heated swimming pool, we did relax on the loungers around the pool late one afternoon.

The Sir Stamford is a relatively small hotel, furnished very much in a 'colonial' style with beautiful flower arrangements.

We noticed from some of the other reviews that guests have complained about the 'hill'. In our opinion, it was a gentle slope up from Circular Quay to the hotel. We are in our 60's and not that athletic and we didn't find it a problem.

The rooms are spacious and have good views. Beautifully appointed. Excellent location, (especially if you are going to the Sydney opera house).

4 of us arrived at the Sir Stamford for our 1-night pre-cruise stay after traveling for nearly 24 hours from the USA. Even though it was only 1030AM, 3 out of 4 of our rooms were ready, which was SUCH a relief. We took our luggage to our rooms, washed our faces and headed out to look for food and to do some sightseeing. The wonderful Chief
Concierge Kieran told us about the AMP Plaza food hall 2 blocks away with many food choices. It was a brilliant suggestion! We could all have what we wanted to eat and for a very reasonable price! So fortified, we headed out to do some shopping and sightseeing before collapsing.

The Sir Stamford is across the street from the Sydney Botanical Gardens (which we visited the next morning) and is up a steep hill from the Opera House, the CBD, the Rocks and Circluar Quay. To paraphrase what another Trip Advisor reviewer said in their review : "the walk up and down the street from the Sir Stamford to the Circluar Quay area is very steep and so not good for someone with walking difficulties. " I would absolutely agree with that. 3 out of 4 of our group were age 75+ and all of them complained about the 'hike" back up the hill to the hotel. If we all went to Sydney again, I would book us in to the Marriott Circluar Quay or somewhere else down the hill on the flat area surrounding Circular Quay.

The hotel itself, the former Ritz Carlton, is very comfortable and does not seem to be showing its age. We all had king-bedded rooms that had a sitting areas with sofa, easy chair and coffee table. My corner room was larger than the other ladies' and had a tiny French balcony and a huge marble bathroom with separate shower & tub, while their rooms all had a shower/tub combination. The bathrobes, wall safe, slippers and tons of pillows were welcome additions. The bed was extremely comfortable and I got a great night's sleep. The TV was in an armoire but worked fine and the water temperature & pressure in the shower were fine. The air conditioning was very welcoming and worked perfectly.

We did not have the breakfast buffet because it was not included in the price of our room and was very expensive.

The staff was SO wonderful - informative, helpful, accommodating. Very, very good staff.
I would stay there again just for the staff!
