“FABULOUS HOTEL”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

We stayed at Sir Stamford for a 3 day get away between Christmas and New Year, I had spent a long time looking at trip advisor before I booked this hotel and I believe it was worthwhile as we absolutly loved this hotel.
The location, the staff, the rooms, the old world charm, this hotel had everything.
From the moment you step into the lobby area you're looked after by the wonderful staff at Sir Stamford.
Yes the hotel is a little expensive but you have to remember you're right in the heart of it all at Sir Stamford.
Thank you for making our stay with you a great experience and when visiting Sydney again we would not hesitate in coming back.

We arrived in Sydney at the end of a 14-day cruise on the Diamond Princess from Auckland. After being thoroughly spoiled for two weeks aboard ship, we were ready for the "real world", but instead found the friendliest staff and most fantastic room! Even more wonderful, it was just a few minutes walk from where our ship docked at Circular Quay! Such a perfect location, this will definitely be our hotel of choice when visiting Sydney. The room was large, the bed was so very comfortable and we loved the charm and character. Everyone we came in contact with at the hotel was extremely friendly and helpful. Our ship docked at 6:30AM, and the hotel was happy to store our bags while we explored. When we returned, not only was our fabulous room ready for us, our bags had been delivered to the room! We just can't say enough about how much we enjoyed this wonderful hotel and all of its character.

I just loved this hotel. Unlike most 5-star hotels in major cities, it is superbly decorated in a way that makes you feel like you are in a grand mansion. The antique furniture was beautiful to look at and comfortable to sit in.

Comfort seemed to be a priority throughout, making you feel very much at home despite being in sumptuous surroundings. This was accentuated by quirky touches such as the cut wombat in the lobby - a reminder that the hotel values friendliness and warmth and doesn't take itself too seriously! In the same manner, the service was pleasant and friendly at all times.

Our twin room was large and roomy, and we even had a distant view of Circular Quay. The huge marble bathroom was lovely. We loved being located in historic Macquarie Street and so close to the Opera House, the Rocks and the Botanic Gardens. Even better, it was close to the ferries which are Sydney's best asset, and the train for easy access from the airport. We didn't find very steep approach difficult, even though we're mature-aged and were pulling suitcases - it's such a very short walk it couldn't be a problem unless you are extremely unfit.

We loved being able to relax and enjoy a light meal in the bar by the fireplace and listen to the music, even though the pianist couldn't sing very well :(

This is of course quite an expensive hotel, in keeping with its location, appearance and amenities. However we were able to obtain a very good deal on the hotel website, making it more than affordable.

It was our friend’s birthday and we were going to celebrate at Aria near the Opera House so we decided to stay in the city for the night. Due to a recent back operation we chose the Sir Stamford due to its proximity to Aria (and The Rocks)

The Sir Stamford is a small antique-furnished hotel so if you like modern then this is not for you. It is like an old style boutique hotel where service is their mainstay.

Our room was a King deluxe room, a big room with a "Juliet" balcony with French doors overlooking Macquarie Street and Domain parklands. For those who like to sleep in the long, heavy drapes are great for blocking out the rising sun. (The room and bathroom facilities on the West side where our friends stayed were smaller and not as luxurious though cost the same?)

The king bed was comfortable and I slept like a log but it is time to replace the bed as it sagged on the sides a bit (I had to sleep more in the middle). The room itself was simply appointed with nice furnishings. The bathroom was marble with twin basins, long but shallow bath, separate shower and separate toilet. The shower has one of those tap setups that you have to engage brain first before using – not hard but you have to look before leaping in.

This is a warm and comfortable hotel. It has Morris the Wombat (I changed his book page for him each day) It has art and antiques everywhere and location is perfect for anything around Opera House / Botanical Gardens, The Rocks or Circular Quay from where you can go to loads more places. Major shops are a bit of a wander away but you are close to some fine restaurants and if you do not want to walk there are taxi’s, buses and trains close by.

The staff were all professional, friendly and were happy to attend to all our needs.

Room Tip: Nice place if you like old world charm

Dear Valued Sydneysider

Aria Restaurant is certainly responsible for attracting visitors to our area and our boutique hotel. We have so many of the Australia's finest restaurants within walking distance, and it's so nice to not worry about driving and parking by enjoying our hotel for a night. We do appreciate all your comments as our style is unique and we do want to attract guests who will feel comfortable in our vintage environment.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2013

We spent four nights in this elegant and gracious hotel, which is perfectly located across from the Botanical Gardens and within easy walking distance of Circular Quay, the Opera House and The Rocks. Our room on the third floor was spacious with King size bed, a sofa and arm chair, as well as desk and chair and small verandah. Apart from the normal large flat screen TV and bar fridge a kettle with assorted tea and coffee was supplied. The all marble double basin bathroom was a delight to use. Having read reports about the water pressure, there is a switch on the shower head that adjusts this. Probably the staff leave it on fine to save water. Both the cold and hot cooked buffet breakfasts are very good offering a wide selection of cereals, fruits, cheese and cold meats, breads, pastries, juices etc. The full breakfast has different style cooked eggs, bacon etc. to choose from all of good quality. The Traditional High Tea which is served every afternoon is not to be missed. The scones were very light and really good as were the varied dainty cakes and sandwiches, served with a glass of sparkling wine and a choice of teas. We found ordering one Traditional Tea was enough for the two of us. The bar is a cozy, pleasant place to relax and enjoy a meal or a cocktail and listen to the live entertainer who is there on a Friday night. All staff we encountered at this hotel were very pleasant and willing to help. We also enjoyed a swim in the small heated pool, which was a bonus after a long day sightseeing. I would have given five stars for this hotel except for the WiFi not being free in the rooms, only in the lobby. I would highly recommend this hotel to couples and families who enjoy an old world refined ambiance.
