Check in - weird.
Him (Receptionist): How has your day been so far?
Me (Guest): Good thanks, just flew up here from Melbourne.
Him: You just threw up?
Me: No. Flew.
Him: Oh, your room rate is high. Does it inlcude any extras?
Me: No, I think I just booked the room. (Knowing it was expensive due to Fleet Review).
Him: I'll make a call. (Makes phone call in front of me, slightly awkward conversation as I can hear his half of it).
Him: You're right, it is just the room rate, no added extras. (As though I have asked him to add on extras...WTF, he was the one who said he would make a call).
Was the whole purpose of this charade to embarrass me?
The Room - hmmmm.
I booked a room described as "park view". Could only see a roof top and into other hotel rooms from the first room. If I put my nose up against the window I could see a tree branch in my peripheral vision. After two phone calls to guest services and a trip to reception 45 minutes later a proper park view room was found. Great view.
Standard sized room, with quite a large bathroom. I liked the day bed by the window and the walk in wardrobe. Room seemed well cleaned. Decor of the room (and the hotel in general) is daggy (think 1990s style timber, black marble, brass lamps, dark colours, so much brown). Terrible lighting in the bathroom. Toiletry amenities are nothing fancy. No blackout blinds, existing blinds too small for the windows so always cracks, room very light in morning. Bed very comfortable though.
Service - questionable
See above for check in experience. They need more people answering phones - tried calling room service on and off for ten minutes, but it was engaged! Two calls to guest services took about 15 rings to answer. I had the do not disturb sign out on my door and was taking an afternoon nap, when housekeeping decided to call to see if I wanted my room cleaned. Er, no thanks, as already indicated by the do not disturb sign, but thanks for interrupting my nap.
Overall - nice location opposite the park, but try the Hilton or Shangri-la instead. Quality of rooms and standard of service much better.

From the very outset, please accept our sincere apologies for the miscommunication encountered on arrival to the hotel. I would like to assure you that we do endeavour to meet the room requests of our guests at all times, due to the shape of the building not all rooms have the same view of Hyde Park however I am pleased we were able to relocate your guest room. Please note for future stays all the rooms on our City Side are fitted with blackout blinds and our rooms on the Park Side with curtains to make for a comfortable sleep.
