“Typical City hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

We stayed at the Intercontinental for a 5 day break in February 2013, our second visit.
We used the limo service and were impressed by that service.
The check in was very good, our daughter was to check in the next day and Kate managed to arrange that our daughter would be on the same floor and not too far away from us.
The next day our daughter checked in with someone who had "manager" in his title, and he was most stroppy with us when we suggested that we may know what her room number would be!
We didn't have breakfast in the hotel due to the cost - over the top is an understatement.
The intercontinental doesn't have free internet either, so coffee breaks were at Starbucks!
To sum up -- good location - good views -- very good junior staff -- some of more senior staff forget that customer service means respecting the customer, and not being full of their own self importance.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that overlooks both the opera house and bridge.

Stayed here for a romantic weekend. Luxurious room with a captivating view sweeping across Sydney Harbour from the Opera House across to Fort Dennison and the Eastern Suburbs. We loved the window ledge seats that wrapped around the length of the room so you could sit and gaze out at the harbour all night. The bed was a massive king size with lovely, soft pillows which I wanted to take home. The bathroom was appointed with shower and spa, fittings were classic and first class. We took High Tea mid afternoon in the dining area downstairs and felt like stars! The architecture is a pastiche of modern, Victorian era and in places, classic retro. We had dinner and breakfast buffet that were both lovely (dinner was modern Australian ala carte). Car parking was not cheap but being in walking distance to all the major tourist locations such as Circular Quay and the city centre you won't need to be bringing your car out all the time. If you want somewhere special for either a pleasurable weekend or the convenience of being near the 'business end' of town, you'll find this first class hotel.

Let me first say, that despite the title of the review, I will stay at this hotel in the future due to its location and favorable corporate rates I have access to. I will also note that I am a frequent guest here, which makes my experiences even more appalling.

The most recent one was this past weekend. My wife and I stayed here for our wedding anniversary. I rang the hotel a week prior and requested a high floor and made them aware of the special weekend.

On check-in, I discovered that no high room had been allocated. What then transpired was a farce. First, I was offered a room one floor higher. When I asked as to whether there was no other possibility, the receptionist when to the back office. After a considerable time she returned with a beaming smile and said that they would be able to do something better. She got busy trying to make changes, made another phone call, and then said that the best she could do is to allocate one floor higher. She apologized and assured us that she would be update my profile so that in future I would be allocated a higher room. When I pointed out that I had called and made this request, and she confirmed that it was noted in my reservation, she said that what she would do would be a 'stronger' request. This begs the question as to why this was not done when I called up the hotel with my special request? If true, they are obviously indifferent to special requests.

Sadly, this is par for the course. Some time ago, we were in a high-level floor, just below the top floor function area. My wife and I were woken up in the middle of the night (around 3 am) with the noise of rushing water. When we went in the bathroom and found that water was pouring from the ceiling. We were moved into another room as they obviously had a serious building problem. If I had waited for the hotel to take any imitative in apologizing for this serious inconvenience, I would have waited forever. When I raised the issue with the front-desk manager, all I received was an apology - no more. I actually had to ask for some consideration, and eventually they offered us breakfast for free.

Room Tip: Ask for higher levels as there can be a fair amount of road noise at the lower levels - but don'...

Dear Tripper1958

Thank you for you review and please accept our apologies for any disappointment experienced.

We do try our best to accommodate all guest requests such as high floor as you had requested, unfortunately though majority of guests all request high floor rooms and it is fully dependant on availability, we cannot guarantee this to any guest especially on weekends with so many guests inhouse celebrating weddings, wedding anniversaries, special birthdays, engagements, the list goes on. I am sorry we could not meet your expectation on this occasion but as mentioned most guests have the same request.

With regards to the water issue on your previous stay, this was caused by a guest in the room above you falling asleep with the bathtub running. Unfortunately they had a towel on the floor which blocked the drain causing the water to enter your room. Pleased we were able to room move you during this particular stay.

Thank you again and we shall continue to welcome you to InterContinental Sydney.

We stayed at the Intercontintental for three nights in March, 2013, in an Opera House veiw room on the 30th floor. The veiw of the Opera house and Sydney Harbour Bridge was amazing.

The room was well furnished and spotless as was the bathroom, loved the no fog mirror.
The king bed and the pillows were very comfortable.

The Inter Continental is located within walking distance to Circular Quay, the Opera house, the Rocks and Botanical Gardens. A short walk to buses, the train station and the ferry terminal.

The staff were friendly and very helpful especially the Concierge Zafar. He recommended the winery tour to the Hunter Valley, had a wonderful day.

We had dinner at Cafe Opera on the first night, they have a great seaford buffet for seafood lovers. We chose al carte meals, which were delicious especially the mango souffle for dessert. The staff were very friendly and attentive.

Will definatley stay at the Inter Continental when in Sydney in future. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

We always enjoy staying here. Great location. An easy walk to circular Quay and the opera house. Diagonally across form main entrance is the Sydney Museum...worth a look. Great service as one would expect. The breakfasts are amazing and if dining in house the buffet is great value...plenty of terrific seafood.

Room Tip: A must is to ask for an eastern harbour view across the botanic gardens.

We enjoyed walking everywhere in downtown Sydney from this location. It is only about two blocks to the ferry terminal and one of the cruise ship terminals so it's handy if you are getting on a ship that docks there. We departed on the Silversea and its dock was a taxi ride away but the hotel coordinated that for us easily.
I had booked using Booking.com and found once we were there that the hotel was offering a better rate. After speaking to the manager, they quickly and easily readjusted our rate and we ended up saving more than $100 per night per room. They handled it beautifully from my perspective. The building itself has a lot of history and the bar area is a lovely place for a drink. Be aware that all prices in Sydney are outta this world and once you understand that, it all seems to fit. The staff is very polite and helpful and this is one of their best features. Rooms were all clean, modern and very quiet and comfortable. We had been flying for more than 24 hours to get there and so it was a welcome oasis. Plenty of coffee shops, interesting places for breakfast and lunch near by. . .so it was ideal for us. G'day mates!~

Room Tip: The Eastern Harbor rooms have great views, and you can choose if you want to look over the Botanical...

Stayed for 6 nights in February 2013, the location is superb overlooking the bridge and Opera house. It's a 5 minute walk to the ferry terminal and about the same to the Rock's district. Spend a little extra and join the ambassador club as you get some great benefits.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the sea food buffet in the evening
