“Modern Boutique City Hotel tucked away in the Rocks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013 via mobile

Had a staycation with girlfriends. Location very central. Restaurants just across the road and walking distance of less than 2 blocks from major clubs, bars and weekend markets. Very subtle professional service, very intimate. Foyer feels like a lounge room and not sparse and cold like a big city hotel. Loved the in room amenities. And whilst only a shower the bathroom is very cleverly designed to make use of its space. Mini bar and tea coffee etx all stored away allowing the clean lines of the room design to shine. Would not recommend for family with young kids. Best suited for a group of girlfriends hitting the town for a night out or a couple on a romantic night out. Found a nice outdoors terrace tucked away where we spent a few quiet hours to sick in the morning sun. A great getaway in our own city. Loved it. Well done.

We stayed here 3 nights while on holiday. Had to leave early on Saturday and hotel opened restaurant early for us so we could have breakfast before we left. Great history being originally first hospital in Sydney. Sandstone walls built by convicts. Very helpful staff, nice lounge to relax after a busy day. This small hotel has it all. History, ambiance, helpful staff and perfect location. It is a gem of a place to stay.

Great location for exploring The Rocks in Sydney on foot. It is also a short walk to the ferry terminal, railway station and bus stop. Features from this historic building's previous life have been retained and incorporated into a modern décor giving it such a warm and comfortable feel which is backed up by the great service. The room was spacious and the bed and pillows very comfy. If I were to stay again I would request a room that was not on street level, as while I like to open the curtains and check out life on the outside am not so keen on pedestrians being able to see directly in at me!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is not at street level

You will get a more luxurious room somewhere else, but you will not get a better position at The Rocks for the same value. There is a large convenience store about 50 meters down the street which for those who travel for business can be a godsend. The rooms are a good size for 2, are very clean, have a comfortable bed, and staff are very helpful. Also the place just has a great vibe about it. There are the downsides, like no personnel lift to get to the upper 2 floors, views are limited, can be noisy during early morning garbage truck runs up and down Harrington Street, and the bathrooms are a little odd in their layout, and dated in appearance. However if you remind yourself that this is 4 star rustic accomodation in the heart of Sydney's Rock's District, you'll come to realise that it is a little gem of a place if you want to stay close to Circular Quay without the grandier, high cost, and sometimes sterile nature of a 5 Star hotel. Being a short and easy walking distance to rail, ferry and bus transport, its location can make great weekend abode for those who either want to immerse themselves into Sydney's main attractions like the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, Circular Quay, or just meander thru the excellent Sunday Rocks Markets. Alternatively you can catch a bus into the CBD, hop on a ferry over to Manly, Darling Harbour or Taronga Park, walk around to the harbour shorline to Botannical Gardens and beyond, and when the weekend is over jump on a train to the Airport. Recommended for couples and business travellers who want to stay in The Rocks district whilst not paying a small fortune for the priviledge.

Room Tip: Stay on ground floor if from the older generation, and also if you intend coming and going alot duri...

Excellent location being a short walk to the Quay, Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Initial impression great - lovely building and foyer of character. Having booked the hotel 8 months ago i was expecting a very good room but instead we got the 'room from hell', number 310. This room had nothing to recommend it, it is a box with no view. I expressed my concern at reception, initially without success. On returning to our room for the evening we were disturbed by the constant noise from the outside air conditioning unit whereupon i demanded a change of room. The night manager was helpful in providing us with a move to room 114 which was a 100 times better.

Room Tip: Request a room on the lower floors. Do not accept room 310.

In April my family had a family gathering in Sydney to celebrate and attend my son's graduation from Macquarie University. We chose to stay at the Harbour Rocks hotel based on a previous discovery of it while exploring The Rocks district. 4 generations across 3 rooms stayed for between 5-10 nights and we couldn't have chosen a better hotel. The character, decor, history and uniqueness of the building were all as interesting and enjoyable as we expected but the aspect of our stay that stood out was the service we received from the staff. Everybody's needs from babies to grandmas were met with a smile and staff were always willing to do more than asked to make our stay more comfortable. The location was also a huge factor in the success of the holiday with transport, restaurants and attractions so close and accessible. This time we were lucky to get a very reasonable room rate due to the time of year (i guess) but I will never stay anywhere else again when visiting Sydney. Thanks guys.

Room Tip: There are different sized rooms so ask about that if relevant.
