On first appearance the hotel looks quite impressive, as we knew from
the start this was a budget hotel, this was not to be expected. Our room was spacious, clean and tidy, although a little dated. My one gripe is the room we were staying in was at the front of the hotel and was very noisy due to the traffic...don't forget your ear plugs! I thought I could live with it and I did but if I were staying any longer I would have had to move rooms.

The location of the hotel is okay, it is about a 20 minute walk to the city or you could walk to Kings Cross Station and get the train which is what we did a number of times. Be warned though some may find it uncomfortable with the short walk to the station due to it being the red light district and having to walk past a number of unsavoury characters. The hotel is more towards Potts Point and there
are quite a few nice restaurants around the corner. Apart from the noise which aggravated me the rooms were cleaned daily and to a good standard. The staff were friendly and very helpful.

Would I stay again? Possibly, for the price I paid I thought it was okay however I would first look at other hotels closer to the center of Sydney. I would recommend this to people on a budget but ensure you do not get a room at the front o f the building.

  • Disliked — Noise of the traffic

Booked this hotel for a stay in mid March. Lobby looked dirty upon arrival however we proceeded to check in. Once we got to the room it was even worse. The bed had to have been at least twenty years old. The walls were peeling as was the ceiling. It was clear that the room wasnt properly upkept by the stained carpeting, permanent black dirt on the window sills. The door did not open without scraping the floor and making a loud noise. The worst however were the several stains on the bedding and shower curtain. The shower curtain stains were so plentiful that it looked like a design. The bedding was full of food stains as though someone was eating chili and spilled it in at least five places. We were so disgusted we took pictures of the filth to make sure we were refunded. We checked out almost immediately and the hotels manager stated he would refund all but our first night eventhough we were not staying there. After this disaster we decided to spend the extra money and stayed at one of the botique hotels in the rocks which was very nice. Very unfortunate
that we had to proceed to get out money back by other means. I cant believe anyone would be satisfied by the condition of this hotel. It is right around the corner from Kings Cross and the metro there, however if forced I would stay at one of the hostels in Kings Cross over this Devere.

  • Liked — Nothing, it was awful.

My sister and I stayed at the DeVere in January 2007 and from the moment we arrived the staff could not have been more helpful. They would not accept a tip for carrying our luggage to our rooms on our arrival, and were attentive, helpful and friendly at all times. The hotel was very affordable, and excellent for people on a tight budget. The rooms were very comfortable; they were always clean, and equipped with kettle, tea and coffee and toiletries. Some of the rooms (we changed half way through our trip due to going to another location for two days) had a microwave, kitchenette, iron and ironing board. The breakfast was more than adequate. The location was good - near to Woollomooloo and King's Cross, and half an hour's walk from Circular Quay and the Opera House; and there are lots of cafes and restaurants nearby. The 311 bus stops just outside the hotel. There is a bank and post office minutes away, and Woolworths is just across the road. There are some lovely views of Elizabeth Bay from the 3rd and 4th floor rooms, and check out the view from the Ladies on the 5th floor!

  • Liked — Helpful staff, good location
  • Disliked — Some of the decor and carpets were a bit tired.

We stayed in this hotel for 5 nights from the 5/10/2006 -09/10/2006 as part of our 6 week around the world trip.

Our booking included the buffet breakfast and we were not disappointed on any of the days. There was a good selection and it was replenished when needed.

The decor does seem tired, but the room was neat and clean and was well serviced during our stay, including having our dishes washed which was a pleasent surprise.

Our room included a fridge, microwave, toaster, frier and kitchenette which was great as you could then cook in the evening which for the budget minded traveller is great.(there is also a Woolworths across the road which helps)

There is also a self service laundry in the hotel which is a bonus.

The hotel is very close to the Kings Cross Staion - less than 10 minutes and is not too bad during the day. If you want to avoid the area(Kings Cross is the "red light" district), the 311 bus stops right outside the hotel and goes to Circular Quay(Where you can get trains and ferries to most places).

You can walk to the Opera House - we did on the first day and it takes about 35 minutes.

Overall the staff were friendly and helpful!

This hotel is perfect for the budget traveller and I would recommend it!

i stayed at this hotel for 2 nights and had no regrets at all.

Before booking my accommodation I read some of the reviews and had my reservations but upon checking into the room I could not understand what hotel everyone else was staying at and how they could give it such bad reviews.

The Devere was a fantastic place to stay for the price. The rooms were clean and served their purpose. It was just down the road from the busy section of the cross with shops and transport in very close vicinity. Hotel staff was friendly and helpful.

My only criticism was that the bathroom was fairly small and the walls were not exactly sound proof but that wasn't a huge problem.

The price was fantastic! With 2 of us staying in the room it was maybe only $5 more than a backpacker’s hostel except we had a private room and bathroom.

I would recommend it to anyone who wants a convenient and clean place to stay with the intention of seeing Sydney during the day and crashing late at night in a comfortable room.

I would stay here again.
