I was a bit apprehensive after reading a few not so favourable reviews about the hotel, but I found Devere to be good money in a city like Sydney. The location is excellent with lots of restaurants, the Kings Cross metro station and bus stand near by. Even the Bondi/Sydney Explorer bus stand is a short walk away. We found the rooms to be nice (though basic) with excellent view of the bay. We found the area to be quite safe with people walking around till quite late at night. The staff is also helpful.

Luckily we only stayed for one night - but i would have been very disappointed if I'd have stayed longer. To be fair the price was relatively cheap, and we did have a good view of the sea from the room, but the room was small and in desperate need of an update.

The location wasn't the best for exploring key places on foot (we had been lucky to have stayed in a great place in Darling Harbour earlier on in our holiday and this had probably spoilt us) but there were a number of restaurants right outside the hotel on the busy street.

I visited www.lastminute.com and found rates for the Devere cheaper than what they were personally offering on the website so, firstly, that's the way to go!

The hotel itself was pretty good; the staff were extremely friendly, helping with bags and always ready to help us as much as the could. Room service was completed each day which was refreshing. I ordered a Deluxe Superior room and it was up to standard, although I'm not a fan of the shower/bath, as it was a very small bathtub.

My only issue with the hotel, is I was led to believe off of other reviews and the hotel itself that the buffet breakfast was included with the price when actually it was $26 per person, per day. My partner and I thought that was a little excessive and walked about 30 steps to the left of the hotel and had a beautiful breakfast for $10 at the Fountain Cafe.

The location is worrying if travelling with a young family, as at the end of the street is a main street of Kings Cross, and there are many eateries on the street but also many strip clubs. In fact, my partner and I were keeping count of how many prostitues we saw and for our 7 day visit, we saw 12, a few in the middle of the day. Quite shocking, really. Just keep that in mind with young ones around.

The bright side of the location, is that the Kings Cross train station is just down the road and can be accessed through said street, or through the back streets opposite the hotel, which don't have any seedy clubs but is filled with many backpacking hostels.

Overall, we loved our trip and being young 20 year olds, didn't mind the seediness of the street adjacent as we chose to ignore the particular lifestyle but as I said, would advise families to keep this in mind. Sydney is fantastic if you are into the hustle and bustle but also, keep away from dining in the harbour if you don't want to pay $45 for a chicken schnitzel!

  • Liked — Location - accessible to public transport. Only two stops from CDB which on the underground train system takes about 4 minutes of travelling! And the Woolworths across the road!
  • Disliked — The seediness of the street in Kings Cross which connected to the street of the hotel.

It's been a couple of years since i stayed at the Devere and unfortunately my earlier good experience is a distance memory. I don't think it's been cleaned, maintained or aired since my last visit and i wouldn't stay there again. For an extra few bucks i moved to the Crown Plaza and it further highlighted just how terrible the Devere was. Be warned.

The Devere Hotel is in a fantastic location. Potts Point is so close to everything and transport is within easy reach. The hotel itself is not so good. We found the staff to be extremely unhelpful, bordering on rude. Our room could not have been worse. It had one window looking directly across at a brick wall. Our room was effectively surrounding the lift shaft, so we could hear (very clearly), every time someone used the lift. The air conditioning was not working and after our first night with no sleep due to noise and heat, we asked to move rooms. Despite the hotel seeming like a ghost town, there apparently wasn't anything available. I would not suggest staying here. The room was small, dark and cheaply decorated.
