I was looking for somewhere nice as a Christmas treat and after comparing all the sydney hotels choose the Shangra La - and honestly we were not dissappointed. A beautiful elegant hotel. One of the attractions is the HUGE rooms - really spacious, with giant king size beds. Even the marble bathroom is HUGE. OK - so the stats. Mini bar, robes, slippers, comp shoe shine, newspapers WIRELESS INTERNET (woo hoo!). TV has many cable channels (but not the new digital ones). Toiletries are Shangra La branded and all lavender scented - shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothbrushes, etc. Towels are a decent size and good quality. Showerhead is GREAT ! good pressure. I found a foam pillow in the cupboard (I HATE feather pillows which every hotel in the world supplies) and we took the doona out of the bag. The bed was really soft. I think it had a sheepskin mattress protector. I don't know if it was meant to be really soft or if it was way past it's prime but I found it unusual. The air conditioning worked very well - got the temp right very quickly and easily. We had a Harbour View room and were looking directly at the the Harbour Bridge and up and down the harbour. (admittedly good views of the toll booths too - so I just looked the other way - at the Opera House). So I was WAY happy with the view - which is what we primarily wanted. And the other thing we noticed - it was so quiet. No hearing the neighbours, other TV's, trolleys in the hallway - nothing. Valet parking worked as it should. check in and out was smooth (although no express check out). We couldn't get into Altitude Restaurant for Christmas night dinner - fully booked. So we went to the Four Seasons - which was half empty and the meal wasn't great - so Sydneysiders must think that Altitude does something right.
Had breakfast the next morning at Cafe Mix buffet - which was very thorough: some chinese and japanese items such as congee, miso etc as well as the usual sausage, bacon, toast station, pastry station, fruit station (including mango and cherries!) cereals, meats and cheeses, yoghurt, and a man doing the egg thing. I had poached but the majority were ordering omlettes - it all was quite good quality and very good service.
We stayed here as a treat and to see that harbour view and were very happy! I'd recommend the Shangra La for anyone after that quintessential sydney experience.
