“Great location and excellent view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2014

Stayed here for one night as part of a large business group. Great location and excellent view of Sydney Harbour Bridge out of my room window. Well appointed room and very comfortable bed. Had a long wait time for the lift to arrive at my floor to go down on several occasions. Breakfast good. Unfortunately did not spend enough time here to fully appreciate this hotel.

Room service and valet services very poor. I contacted guest services for assistance with baggage - recent surgery - and retrieving car from car park. I am still waiting for baggage assistance and needed to request car from reception. Not happy.

Room Tip: city view is excellent

Wonderful few nights stay at the Shangri La hotel. The room had a wonderful view of the Sydney Opera House. Very spacious, plugs were the universal plugs so you don't need an adapter and the beds are incredibly comfortable. We went up to the bar which I would definitely recommend and watched the sun set there one evening and the panoramic view was phenomenal. It is up a bit of a hill but completely manageable for people without mobility issues so don't let that put you off. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Would definitely return.

I just loved my 3 nights in this hotel. My premier grand harbour room offered one of the best views in Sydney, and it had everything a single occupant or a couple might need. The bed, lounge & bath areas were spacious and cosy at the same time, with soft & comfy furnishings. Even the window ledge provided a nice space to sit & look over the harbour.
I have reviewed the altitude restaurant separately. I loved my dinner there one night. In addition, I had a light, spicey red curry snapper in Cafe Mix one night. I would recommend this restaurant if your looking for something healthy. Good service too.
The gym is spacious, with a good range of cv equipment in good working order and yoga mats etc. there was always someone on site to provide a welcome. Plenty of towels and water was provided. A really nice space to get a decent workout.
I used the pool twice, and it was lovely to be able to have a swim in an indoor pool, given the cooler weather. You definitely need to get there outside usual peak times though, because any more than 2 people in the pool & things feel crowded. The temp was goldilocks perfect :)
I had read earlier reviews that didn't put the staff in a very good light. Either I got lucky, or the hotel is listening to reviewers, because the people without exception were polite, attentive, and warm.
My only concern was the a/c in the room, that had a mind of its own for the 3 nights duration. I rang maintenance twice & on each occasion, someone came to the room promptly, and reset the power, which fixed the problem temporarily. On my last morning there, no permanent fix had been made however, and the room was unpleasantly cold.
There was a nice big flat screen tv in a perfect spot to be enjoyed from the bed, or the lounge, with a pretty reasonable choice of foxtel.
In addition, the room offered a media connection that is rare these days, allowing occupants the opportunity to watch DVDs etc. Nice. A good range of pay per view movies were also on offer.
Honestly, close to a perfect stay. Thanks to everyone in the hotel, I was very comfortable even though I was travelling solo for the first time.

Shangri-La is generally very reliably high-quality throughout Asia and Sydney was certainly up to their usual standard. The brand is somewhat unusual in that the hotels generally work well for both business and vacation travel (many competitors are much better for one or the other), again the Sydney Shangri-La lived up to this as well. Great location (near the Rocks, harbor/ferry quay and major shopping streets), very pleasant and helpful staff and nice rooms. Decent restaurant variety in-hotel with plenty of options in close walking distance as well. It also has a lot of the little conveniences that can make a trip easier and more enjoyable (like outlets that match most international plugs without adapters, fast free wireless internet access, etc.). All in all a great stay!

This hotel has a lot going for it. There is the excellent location, the great harborview rooms, the size and comfort of the accommodations, the fantastic Blu/Altitude bar on the top floor, and several staff members (one a mere German trainee) who present as consummate hospitality professionals etc.

On the downside, it feels very dated, the service is decidedly uneven and the quality of the breakfast is rather mediocre (they constantly ran out of items every morning and were slow to replenish them). When at breakfast it also took forever to get a coffee and then the waitress cleared the entire table when we went up for second helpings with it being a production to get new cutlery set. I suspect this is a matter of hiring very green immigrant personnel not used to the service industry. The spa also feels rather shopworn.

On a more significant note, the room was nice and we appreciated the universal power outlets and comfortable king bed. But the bathroom had a persistent musty smell which appeared to be coming from the drains. The hotel was nice about it and sent up champagne and chocolates. They also put some substance down the drains which made them then smell of chemicals but, overall, it was hard to mask the odor.

The personnel at the Amex platinum check in desk were beyond gracious and pleasant, but this does not mitigate the fact that one does not except the foregoing kind of issues in an allegedly five star property with a brand standard to maintain. Have stayed at the other major Sydney CBD hotels and this, regrettably, would have to rank in a lower quartile of the list.

Room Tip: Book harbor view room on high floor.

Dear Peter R,

Thank you for your review and helpful feedback on our property. We are pleased to hear overall you enjoyed your stay with us. We assure you our staff all receive the same training and any variations in service may simply be from a busy operation or a different approach to guest hospitality. We're sorry to hear about the smell you mentioned in your room's drain, we are currently looking further into this.

We hope you will visit again soon and provide us with the opportunity to regain your confidence in our property.

Thank you

Stayed there for 3 nites recently. As we arrived early and the rooms were not ready, we headed straight for breakfast which was nice. Got our rooms after that, earlier than normal check in times which I felt was a plus point.

My room was comfortable and spacious enough. Clean with all the minimum requirement ticked off nicely. View was also nice as I was on a high floor.

The negatives - breakfast quickly got old as it was the same menu with not even a little variation at all. Would have preferred if they change parts of the menu daily. In the first place, whilst nice, the variety is not that extensive.

Secondly, when checking out, I had to wait a good 25 minutes and three phone calls before someone came to take my bag down. That was most irritating and time wasting.

Overall ok for a short stay
