“Beautiful views of Sydney”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

Based in The Rocks, Sydney, the Shangri La is really well positioned. It's walking distance to Sydney Harbour and Sydney Bridge, with a beautiful view of both from the Blu bar on the 36th floor. In fact, the view of Sydney from the rooms is also spectacular especially at sunrise and sunset. The rooms are well appointed with all the things you may need - iron and Ironing board, fully stocked bar fridge, and a really nice bathroom.
The staff were exceptionally friendly everywhere we went. A good selection is available at breakfast with the daily newspapers on hand if you feel the need catch up on the local news.
The only minor hiccup was it took quite a bit longer than expected to check out in the morning - they needed more people on the front desk.
This was my second stay and I was once again delighted with my choice.

Room Tip: The higher the better to ensure a great view of Sydney

This hotel is in a prime location overlooking Circular Quay. We chose to stay in one of the larger rooms (premier grand harbour) which included a sitting area. As previous reviewers have stated however, if you are on foot the hotel is located at the top of a steep hill including 2-3 dozen steps. The welcome we received in the very pleasant reception area was warm and helpful.

As I said, our room had extra space and the view of a lifetime including the harbour bridge and the iconic opera house. The bed was huge and sumptuous, I particularly liked the turn down service and the bookmark placed on the bed. The marble bathroom was also luxurious with a bath, shower and delectable toiletries. I also liked the hairband that was provided to tie back hair on breezy days.

Another highlight was the breakfast buffet. In a word - awesome - with every conceivable breakfast option available and friendly, attentive staff. Well done Shangri la.

If I were to nitpick I would point out the static electric shocks from the taps (not the hotel's fault) and a dubious exchange rate when settling the bill in sterling.

Overall a wonderful experience. Thank you :)

Room Tip: It has to be a room with the view.

This hotel would be the best Hotel in Sydney for excellent service and caring staff. There is not a thing our of place and the Rooms are Heaven. As soon as you walk into your room you feel so relaxed. Price wise it is in the top but worth every cent.

Room Tip: Pick the Harbour Room View Opera House.

The Shangri-La is a nice 5* on the highest point of the The Rocks in Sydney. The view from the higher floors is stunning (Harbour Bridge, Opera). If Australian Service in general is very friendly they still put one on top here.
The rooms are modern and spaceous. Also the bathroom is rather big with bath tub and separate shower stall. Full Multimedia connections are possible in the room. The beds are really comfy and I slept very well here.
In general the buffet restaurant on first floor (The Mix, open all day) is excellent with a large variety of foods and flavours. The top floor (36th) houses the Altitude, a bar with floor to ceilling windows and a breathtaking view, which unfortunately closes pretty early (for Europeans).
Oh yeah - internet is free for one week. Something worth mentioning here in AUS.

We stayed in Shangri La Sydney for 4 days total before and after our cruise to New Zealand. The service is as per Shangri La's usual high standard. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. When we were in Shangri La Guilin in September 2012, we told ourselves that it had the best view from all the Shangri La we visited. Well, I'm afraid Sydney's one is now top of our best view list. We had the corner suite so we get to see two views and experienced both the sunrise and sunset. Would like to go back again soon to experience that again.
Sydney also has the best General Manager. Mr Franz Donhauser. Such a wonderful man and a real gentleman!

Room Tip: Go for the corner suite.

This hotel is fantastic. The views are incredible - my room was only on the 8th floor but looked out at the bridge and opera house. A trip up to the bar on the 36th floor is a must and the cocktails up there were exceptional. This hotel has attention to detail down pat - the rooms are large wonderfully furnished and beautifully appointed.
I ate at the hotel only once which was the buffet lunch at Cafe Mix. The variety was staggering and was topped only by the selection and quality of the desert buffet.

My only complaint was that the post card for my children I bought a stamp from and sent via the concierge never arrived - which was a bit disappointing :(
The other thing I noticed was the hallways, both on my floor and others didn't seem to be vacuumed the entire week I stayed there and by the time I left they were noticeably dirty.

Small criticism however, the hotel is totally world class.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor facing the harbour for the best view.
