“Location, location, location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

The best thing about this hotel is the location. It is close to shopping, the Circular Quay, Darling Harbour, the Rocks, etc. Sydney is a magnificent city with so much to do so staying in a great location is key. The service is good but the prices are high (as are all of the Sydney hotels). Our room was a little on the small side but then I used my Marriott points to pay for it so they probably assigned us a room accordingly. Odd how that works.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms in the angled ends of the hallways - they are the smallest ones.

As stated in other reviews, this location cannot be beat! Steps from everything you want to do in Sydney (ferries, Opera House, Harbour Bridge, wonderful restaurants at the Rocks, shopping). Since it is such an expensive property we were expecting a little more from the staff. Each person we encountered was fine, but not the usual Marriott level of hospitality. The swimming pool is less than desirable. The room has very little drawer space. However, the location makes up for all of the negatives. Exec lounge was decent.

Room Tip: Harbour view

First, my rating system. A hotel that's on par with expectations set by its peers in the price range and location gets 3 stars. If it significantly exceeds that standard it gets 4 stars, and if it far exceeds that standard (upper 10% in its class) it gets 5 stars.

The Marriott Sydney Harbour generally meets the standards of a business class and near-luxury hotel, and sometimes exceeds them. It has a well-staffed concierge lounge with a fabulous view and serves the usual offerings of its ilk. Rooms on the upper floors are very quiet and have great views. The location is superb. Avis collocated with hotel. Arrival lounge with showers is a real standout.

The hotel appears to have had a remodel in recent years. Though the fresh appearance is appreciated, some unfortunate design decisions were made that favor style at the expense of function: shower is only half enclosed, allowing water to splash out and accumulate across the bathroom floor. The safe takes up half of the rack space in the closet, but could have easily been located in the usual floor or upper shelf space. Most drawers were replaced by small fashionable shelves. Net result is inadequate rack and shelf space for 2 people for a week's worth of clothing and accessories.

Concierge employed a young man who could use a refresher course in hospitality. Though very friendly, he committed a classic mistake when I was inquiring about low cost parking options. Rather than responding "I don't know but I'll work on finding the information you requested," he answered in generalities and speculations. Even as a stranger in a strange land I was able to eventually answer my own question via a web search. Similarly with options on how to return my Avis car after-hours. Rather than doing some research to find a good answer, he speculated, and his answer turned out to be incorrect.

These two examples, hotel design and staff training shortfalls prevent me from awarding the 4 or 5 stars that I very much wanted to give to this wonderful and well-staffed property.

This hotel is busy. At peak times, service may be slow. However, staff are polite and friendly, happy to help. Choose a room with a bridge/harbour view to take advantage of the location. A city view room makes the hotel no different from others in town. We thought that value for money was good at this hotel, compared with other CBD hotels in Sydney. The room was clean, the bar had a wide variety of drinks and snacks, and a good value breakfast (which was a pleasant surprise and probably better than using the restaurant). Live DJ on a Friday evening. Bell staff provided excellent service from driveway to room.
It's not as swish as say, the new Hilton, the Westin or the Four Seasons. But for a comfortable night near the harbour, it was pretty good.

Agree that rooms are minimalist but functional, beds are great. Price is steep. Staff is universally cheerful and helpful. 5 star to the staff. Best feature is the location. Nice walk to the Opera House, Circular Quay, wonderful restaurants(The Sidney Cafe atop the Old Custom House is a must but PRICEY), bistros, all within walking distance. Learned that tipping in Australia is much less generous than in US. Not necessary but welcome if you feel that service has been extraordinarily good. After the first few US size tips the reaction was almost giddy. One waiter at a local sidewalk cafe quipped "I love Americans" after a 20% tip was added. Nuff said!

This is my absolute favorite Marriott property. The location is outstanding as is the service. The staff is extremely friendly and the concierge staff were helping with all our bookings. Don't miss the executive lounge either. This one is not to be missed!

For the price you pay a night @aud$400 for regular room (no views, partial bridge view), this Marriott property is easily overpriced by international Marriott standards. This said, and price aside, location is good, bed is comfortable (standard Marriott bedding) and executive lounge free breakfast and evening hor'dourves for Gold members and higher are decent, not superb. Replenishments are slow, and spread is small, but its ok....if u are not expecting perfection, great service and not in a hurry. Wifi service in room n executive lounge is decent and free for gold members and higher. Housekeeping and concierge service is inconsistent but Robbie is very good at making up room and is detailed. Sometimes they are slow, and forget to send the right items requested from housekeeping, other times, they are fast and excellent.

The furnishings in the bedroom and bathroom are not luxurious like some Marriott properties (e.g. singapore, austria); minimalist design and functional with large screen lcd tv. Gym has a wide selection of equipment but some of the equipment are very dated. For the price u pay, one would think bottle water is provided, but this is not the case. So, in comparison to other Marriott properties in big cities, some things are lacking but overall, decent n somewhat pricey for what you get.

The buffet seafood lunch at Icon, their restaurant, was good but lacking in seafood varieties. The dessert spread was divine. The service was outstanding and price was decent.
