“Marvelous Location, but Pricey”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2012

Stayed four days at Marriott Sydney Harbour Circular Quay

There are many pluses: Outstanding location including 5 minute walk to Circular Quay train station and ferry terminal, clean modern rooms, some rooms with great views of harbor, and helpful staff.

And there are Minuses: Price, price and prices for everything. $2.50 AUD for a toll-free call, $14 AUD to launder a men's shirt (really), $30 (AUD) to dry clean a suit. And there are surcharges on Sunday.

Internet is free to Marriott Marquis members and works well; otherwise, $10 AUD per day.

Executive Lounge is nice oasis with complementary breakfast. Mostly simple fare, and main reason for 4 Circles. Ask for package deal that includes the Executive Lounge if you will be using the hotel for breakfast. Also includes complimentary drinks too at happy hour.

Tip #1: Use the train from the airport directly to Circular Quay...a 5 minute walk to the hotel. About $16 AUD per person including airport surcharge (you'll learn that there is a surcharge for almost everything in Australia). Less than 20 minute train ride.

Tip #2: If most concerned about reducing total cost, then pay with cash from an ATM. Hotel adds a 1.5% credit card surcharge on top of usual 2-3 percent foreign currency surcharge added by most credit cards (but not Capital One).

Gripe: $18 AUD for martini at the bar not including tip...a personal record.

Room Tip: More important is to request access to Executive/Concierge Lounge.

“Great place to stay.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

Stayed there in December 2012. It had the best service at the Concierge Lodge. It was excellent. They served wine, soft drinks, champagne and all the top liquor ( Husband likes Jack Daniels) They had that as well. The food was tasty and they bring out the desserts later in the evening. They have several shops nearby where you can buy souvenirs. We walked to the harbor and took a boat to a local beach. The staff was friendly and the location is great. There are several places to eat at the Harbor. If you can spend the extra money the Concierge Lodge is worth it. I have been to several Marriott Hotels in various parts of the world and this one if the best so far.

Room Tip: I bought Groupons prior to the leaving so that I could get a local taste of the city. Really enjoyed...

“Convenient and comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

Pricey because of its location but still an excellent hotel. Only 200 meters from Circular Quay, it is so convenient, with a supermarket across the street and no shortage of taxis. The rooms are large enough, with good spacing and everything works. It was a genuinely pleasant stay. Transport is so easy. Nowadays, you can catch the SkyTrain from the airport (only A$15.40 pp) and get off at Circular Quay and then it is only a short walk to the hotel - Pitt Street is the 2nd street on the right after exiting the station - on the opposite side to the water of course. hehe

Room Tip: The "city view" rooms are not that great, in terms of a view unless you are placed on the...

“As expected...with a couple of points off...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

Overall very similar to a full service Marriott you would find in the US. This one has convenient location across the street from a central train station, harbor area, surrounding shopping and restaurants etc. So location wise, it's terrific. Staff is very courteous at the lobby area during check in.

Knocking several points off the lounge if you're a frequent Marriott Rewards member. Narrow breakfast selection, thin choices for happy hours snacks. The lounge isn't cleaned frequently. At the lobby area, McQuarries's serve extremely slow orders. For a soup and sandwich, it took over 30 min to get after waiter took our order.

So if your expectation is just of location, this one trumps it. If your looking for services and amenities, prepared to be disappointed.

“Lovely rooms, perfect location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

Rooms are very modern though slightly smaller than expected, bathroom feels something like a hospital bathroom. Excellent quality beds and linens. Fast room service, huge TV with a multitude of channels. Good quality irons provided. The lobby area is very late 1980's, nothing like the rooms and lacks atmosphere. Lobby Bar is underutilised as there is no feel to the place. Service standards are fair, nobody has made me feel welcome in the 3 times i stayed here, neither have i felt unwelcome. This hotel really is all about location. 3 minutes walk to Circular Quay perfect for cruise ship passengers, plenty of dining options nearby. 5 minutes walk to Wynyard Metro Station and shopping areas. Hope this helps.

Room Tip: Anything with a harbour view, it's lovely !
