Attending the hotel for conference, for ease decided to stay at the same venue. Booked as the Marriott and arrived to find it Pullman Sydney Hyde Park.
The room was adequate but the veneer timber and paintwork showing signs of age and generally knocked about by travellers bags etc. Thankfully hand rails are provided for the shower over the bath, it is quite a large bath and without the rails it would be very difficult for other than able bodied guests to manage. Luckily we did not need to have a bath as the headrest in the corner was missing. Velcroe to hold it in but no headrest. The toilet seat whilst clean had some funny bubbles in the plastic that certainly looked like a mess that had not been cleaned up (yuck).
The bed, whilst in a large room was poked into an alcove. The mattress topper was greatly appreciated as without it the bed would have been uncomfortable. Housekeeping only made a hard hearted attempt at making it as each evening the Donna, sheets and topper all became untucked with a mind of their own. One plus was opening windows, a luxury in a city hotel however the constant wail of sirens though the evening made us close these in hope that the noise would be drowned out enabling a restful sleep. This chain may need to put double glazing in thir rooms to block out the noise. Blackout blinds could also be of assistance.
Food provided in the restaurants was adequate, with plenty of healthy options however the chef seems to have a real liking for deep fried or heavy food (heavy on the cheese and cream). At all times the wait staff were helpful and nothing was too much trouble.
The advertised valet parking was a joke, "surely you don't want to pay extra for me to park your car and bring your luggage to the room?" We then parked our car, manged to find a baggage trolley, negotiate the car park maze and finally arrive in our room with our bags some 25 minutes after check in. Guy's please take a look at your competitors and see how they operate, service with a smile and helpfulness will always bring a traveller back to your establishment. (Sheraton on the Park, Wentworth and Intercontinental all do this so well).
Was there a concerige as such? I still don't know. Being a little unfamiliar with this particular part of Sydney, especially walking to venues I asked at the front counter for directions and whilst I finally got to where I needed it took several staff members to work out what I thought were easy enquiries. A little local knowledge on how to generally get about would be very helpful. At no time did any staff member tell me about what buses ran past or very near to the hotel, let alone mention the free city circle bus that I found by accident.
Would we stay here again? I suppose if the rate was right or we had a function that was adjacent to the venue then maybe. Maybe there are still teething problems with the Marriott and Pullman chains. A courtesy call letting us know the name change had occurred may have helped as we drove past the building a couple of times unaware that we were driving past the venue.
A good solid hotel that is satisfactory for a conference or a day or two shopping. It just lacks the polish and spark of similarly rated properties in the area.
