“Quaint, Refurbished, Clean”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2008

This hotel is located next to the New South Wales Police Headquarters, nearer to Oxford St (the gay/lesbian precinct of Sydney). The hotel has been refurbished recently (so everything is new) but the hotel lifts are probably its charm. It functions well but the way you have to run around [each lift has doors facing in a different direction]. Rooms are clean and equipped with LCD TVs. Broadband is available but expensive. There are computers in the lobby too that you can use (also chargeable). Note that the corridors outside the rooms are narrow. And I mean, really narrow. Two persons could not pass each other without one stopping! But once inside the room, it's ok. Some rooms have horrible views so if you plan to stay in to work/rest, ask for rooms that face Riley St (you can a view of the city). Occasionally if the tourist buses show up, the breakfast downstairs is a bit of a rush. But if you are willing to walk about 3 minutes onto Oxford St, you can get any kind of breakfast you want. For the price it charges, it's got the most horrible car park facility in the world - using it is an experience itself you will not forget.

  • Liked — Just recently refurbished, so everything's new
  • Disliked — The morning breakfast crowd (the tourist groups!)

Hi fellow travellers, I would like to tell all about a hip hotel i came across called the Cambridge in Sydney. After returning from Japan via Singapore, we were looking for something that was a little different, fashionable, clean, and in a great location to stay. This was definately it. When we arrived, we were greated by a modern lobby, two Vespa scooters, and a group of motivated receptionists, who made the check in simple, polite and quick. After a couple of drinks at the bar, (changing lights!) , we proceeded to explore the famous Oxford Street which was merely 100m away. We thoroughly enjoyed the walk, and returned to the Hotel for a well deserved rest. We had booked a Deluxe room which was large , modern, clean and comfortable. Our room also had great views of the city at night. We ordered drinks in room service and had a good night sleep on a very comfortable bed.
We explored Sydney City, (10 mins walk away), with Darling harbour, Shopping and the Opera House and stayed another night before leaving. All in all, a great hotel with our recommendation. We will definately return for a longer stay.

This was my first trip alone and after 22 hours on a plane all I wanted was a shower and a bed. I found my way to the hotel from the train station which wasn't too hard. The location of the hotel is on a side street, quite close to everything, just a few minutes walk to the park & shopping.
When I arrived the hotel had no notes of my booking but after a few hours wait and a chat with the manager they eventually found it and it was worth the wait.
The room was fantastic. I had a great view of the city - could even see the Opera house in the distance. The rooms are very large with a great balcony. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was spotless. There was a good flatscreen tv with a fair few channels. The room also had a couch and a small fridge with tea & coffee making facilites. The aircon was great and had a remote control which was very handy!!
Staff were ok. They initially seemed a bit unsure but they were quite pleasant.

All in all, I would recommend this hotel. I stayed in a hostel & two other hotels in Sydney and this was probably the best.

Coming from Tasmania, we decided to enjoy a relaxing weekend in Sydney, before returning to U.K. Our travel agent recommended that we try the Cambridge in Sydney, as it was refurbished and yet inexpensive. Based on this advise, we arrived on the Friday night and was pleasantly surprised. It was new ,trendy, and in a great area, Surry Hills. We were given an express check in for the Deluxe Room, which was very clean, with modern furnishings and bathroom. We quickly unpacked, and proceeded to the bar for a quick drink before enjoying a walk up Oxford Street, which was great for shopping, dining and entertaining.
When we returned, the staff at front desk were quite helpful in recommending what to do for our short stay in Sydney, as well as organising a wake up call, and breakfast the next day.
We had a great sleep on the large bed and enjoyed breakfast the next day for $12.95 which I thought was good value.
The holiday break was the best thing to do, and I can thoroughly recommenend this hotel for any holiday traveller. Its not often, that you can still find great value and service , especially in a city hotel.

Stayed for two nights in a queen standard in Aug 2008. It was our second time there. When we stayed there first time (April 2008), the room was a lot larger with bath tub. But, this time the room was quite small with a very small bathroom. The bathroom didn't have a bath tub and very very simple style without any space where you can put even your small toiletry bag. We couldn't open the bathroom door and the shower door at the same time. The room and the bathroom were clean when we arrived. However, the next morning, the room cleaner didn't bother changing pillar cases and bed sheet (the bed was made though). We noticed that when we got back and told the reception. Someone brought two pillar cases, the bed and blanket sheets, but, without changing them himself, he just left them with us which we did it ourselves. I'm not sure if it was the hotel policy, not to change them for an environmental or ecomonical reason, or they just have a slack cleaner there.

So if you'd like your bed made with clean sheets everyday, make sure you leave a notice on the bed :-)

Very dissappointing as I am a great fan of the Choice Hotel chain in the USA, especially Quality and Comfort Inns. Very small rooms and generally below Choice standards.. I would advise against.

Stayed for 4 nights in a One Bedroom Suite recently. The most i can say about this place is how average it is.

Location: 5 min cab ride to Pitt Street. 5 min walk to Oxford St.
Cabs go up and down the street and very easy to flag down.

CarPark: The pokiest carpark you will ever see. watch those corners as you try and go around tight corners...one way up and one way down!
$20 per day to park

Checkin: inconsistent staff. A couple of the staff were brilliant (Estella and Livia and one guy I cant remember) while the rest were grumpy and seemed overwork...which they probably are leading up to WYD.

Lifts: The slowest lifts you will encounter. 2 lifts in Hotel...take forever to get back down to the lobby and then up again. On the day of check out one of them was being serviced...and the other one only hold 2 people and 2 suitcases...very small!

Room: One bedroom for the price is a very good option. Small and basic lounge/kitchenette area..with small LCD TV, Microwave, Sink, tiny couch and desk. Decor was clean and fresh.
Bedroom was also small with wardrobe, comfy bed and pillows. Ironing board and iron.
Bathroom was also clean with shower over bath and a sink and toilet.
All products and towels were updated daily.

Bar/Restaraunt. Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner available....decent prizes but limited variety.
Bar is very small with 4 small couch areas. Slow service.

Basically this hotel is more of a upmarket Backpackers. The hotel was filled with a lot of "Groups" and the staff looked overwhelmed and "over it" a lot of the time.
There are 2 computers that you can buy Internet Access at $5 for 1/2 hour.
Lobby area also has TV and couches.

Pool area is tiny and "Gym" has one machine which didnt work while we were there.

Not your standard Quality Hotel 4 Star Property...in fact..i wonder what they spent all that money on!!
Great for groups on a strict budget if you are in no hurry to go anywhere as the lifts are terrible. Service needs to be looked at...especially the attiude of management (you want to act like you work in a 5 star..then prove it!)
