“There are other well located hotels - avoid”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

The hotel is well located in the rocks - that's the only positive. The fan on the airconditioner is so loud you can't operate it overnight if you want a peaceful sleep. The noise from the street is so loud, you can't get a peaceful sleep. The bathroom is very small, large enough for the door to open and that is it. it is a small bath with a dirty, clogged shower head over the bath. The shower curtain is either in the shower/bath with you (clinging to your leg) or hanging out of the bath, with water running all over the floor - think wet feet every time you enter the bathroom until it dries. I was told I had breakfast included in my booking, only to find out at breakfast I don't. The manager said "I don't want to make excuses" and then went on to make excuses.

The windows were dirty and there were hairs in the linen.

There are better hotels at a similar or cheaper price - my advice is to not stay here.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

Dear Daletnurse

Deeply disappointed to hear about your experience. Our hotel is a heritage site but has its charms. I am sorry you felt it was not up to your standard but appreciate the comments and feedback to ensure we look into the areas you have mentioned.

Kind regards

We were traveling on the Carnival spirit cruise ship & stayed there the night before. This was a great location the staff were very friendly the rooms & service was very good. We would defiantly stay there again if we are in Sydney.

Room Tip: Rooms facing Sydney Harbour also don't forget to go to the roof for a swim.

Good stuff: on arrival we were offered an upgrade (payable) for instant access to room on 8th floor. Reasonably quiet situation and fair-sized room. At 7.45 a.m. This was all good. The Rocks area is great to wander round with good eateries and near Circular Quay and superb views of the iconic Bridge and short walk to Opera House. Poor stuff: toilet/shower room was minuscule, air/con unit was mega noisy, even on setting 1. I could have done with my noise-cancelling headphones! Only thing was, none of the three windows could open as they had been secondarily glazed. Bizarrely this was done leaving the wooden slatted blinds sandwiched between the two layers of glass and they were filthy! The room needs a bit of t.l.c. In the pictures dept. I.e. there are none. Also the hair dryer plugged in on the wall opposite the long mirror. I gave suggested all this to the hotel including provision of a small vanity mirror on the desk near a plug. Just a bit of thought would improve the client experience enormously. The most strange thing was lack of bedside table at one side of the king-sized bed. They did provide one, after saying it was right enough that only one was there!

Room Tip: Top floor at back but good rooms? Maybe once improvements have been made. Go out for breakfast!

The best thing about this hotel is its fantastic location, The Rocks. 10 min walk to Circular Quay, from where you can get trains, buses, ferries. The other good part is the Sydney Hop-On Hop-off bus has a stop across the street. The room we got was clean, had a variety of pillows as usual. The room gave a retro look and we could see the harbour bridge from the window. The bad part was the lighting in the corridor, at night the lighting was a little dim, else the room was spacious and clean. We stayed here for 3 nights and were happy with the service we got and its fabulous location.

Dear aajolly

Thanks for the review and positive look at the service and facilities of the Holiday Inn Old Sydney. We are proud to be a heritage building and hence many aspects we keep 'retro' as you mentioned.

Hope to see you again soon.

I was in room 331 25 January and was very unhappy with both the hotel and the room. In summary why you should not stay here :
1) Windows were dirty
2) Cracked window glass
3) Cobwebs around the window
4) Light globe was broken
5) Noisy AC
6) Very small room and an even smaller shower
7) Had to ask for a luggage stand
8) Lift does not service the floor - you need to carry your bags down/up the steps
9) Their best price guarantee is a lie. I pointed out they offered the room cheaper after we booked and we sought the same rate however they started talking about the fine print and would not amend their rate.
10) No AC in the foyer - very hot during the Australian summer.
Check out the photo - It tells all.

Dear JetA1too

I am disappointed to read your impression of our hotel. We at the Holiday Inn Old Sydney aim to improve our hotel operations day by day through our service and by making improvements to the way we operate based on our guest's feedback. I thank you personally for providing your views.

Our team in housekeeping strive to deliver the utmost in cleanliness and I apologise for the lapse in this case. We can in fact and should have opened the window to clear the cobweb on the outside. Since reading your review your comments have been discussed with the management team and taken very seriously.

Thanks again for your review and I hope, should you or others stay with us, they will notice vast improvements in the areas you outlined.

Kind regards

We stayed for three nights in mid December. We had to wait a few hours for the room I wanted to be ready as we arrived on an early morning flight from the UK, but the reception were very helpful and supplied us with towels and toiletries for the hotel pool and stored our baggage. As the room was a little delayed in being ready they kindly provided complimentary tea and biscuits - nice touch. The breakfasts are excellent and well worth it. The views from the front rooms are not wonderful, but you can see the Opera House from the top floors. It is so handy for the harbour and all the sights. There is plenty of dining and bars just up the road. Although it is in a busy area we did not find it noisy after 11. The pool area has good view, being just below the Sydney Bridge, but it is only small, as is the hot tub. Ok to use if it is quiet.

Room Tip: Pre book breakfast. It is cheaper. The breakfasts are well worth the price.

I was very disappointed with this hotel. It was picked for it's location, as a cruise was booked, leaving the next day.
The lobby and hallway areas were not air conditioned. We had to carry our suitcases down some stairs to get to our room. The room was small and dingy. The windows were dirty, cobwebby and cracked. A glaring streetlight was right outside the window.
This hotel was way too expensive for the poor quality.
Never will return to this place!

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms in the older part of the building!
