“Holiday Inn visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

We spent 6 days staying here in January 2013 while visiting friends and family. The hotel was excellent in most respects. It has a wonderful situation by the Quay and with views of the bridge and the Opera House (when there isn't a liner in dock). Good spacious room, clean, nice roof top pool. Could do with more than 15 minutes a day free Internet access though.

We were greeted by super friendly receptionist who was only too happy to store our bags until our upgraded room was ready. It was worth the wait! We had a King room with a sofa (but no coffee table, which was inconvenient) and a beautiful view of the harbor and the Opera House. The hotel has a coin operated laundry, which was handy as we were in Australia for two weeks. There are two computers for Internet usage in the lobby, $5 for 30 minutes. The location in the Rocks is fantastic! We walked everywhere from there; the Opera House, the Botanical Gardens, over the bridge, Darling Harbor and the Chinese Garden. That's a lot of miles, but we enjoyed it!

Stayed here 13 years ago and for the last couple of years every 4-6 months. Its a great location, with a small pool that has a great view. Stayed at all sides of the building and you should avoid the front if street noise bothers you. They have secondary glazing but the outer windows dont also fit that well so leak sound. The bathrooms are all small but do the job.
Wifi is a problem though. I have had issues with my ipad and the download speeds but on the last visit in both rooms I had the wifi didnt reach inside the room. And in my 2nd room the cable didnt work either which will be fixed though. So if this is important then avoid rooms x01-x03 unless you can check or be assured they have done something (need routers over that side). Hotel were good about it - free drink etc but frankly I wasted 2 hrs on this issue which is too much. HI generally need to look at their speeds, people need more these days.

Room Tip: Avoid x01-x06 (approx) that are at the front as noisier and wifi not working at present.

We stayed at the hotel for two nights for a friends wedding
The room was a king double with views of the opera house and bridge
The location is great for exploring the rocks area and its close to circular quay
This is our second stay in the hotel and would stay again -- the atrium area is a lovely area to relax and the views from the rooftop pool area are amazing
We paid $300 per night

My husband and I stayed at this hotel in a King Harbour View Room. Going by the pictures on the internet we assumed that we would have a harbour view, which is why we booked the room in the first place. Harbour View Rooms were more expensive that the other rooms. On our first day we were very excited to see that we did have a beautiful view from our room..but looking out of our window 6am the next morning there was a huge cruise ship, taking up the whole view of the harbour. This was the view we saw for the rest of our stay...which was for 4 days. We would not have booked the Harbour View Room, paying extra money for the privilege, of looking at a ship!
On the plus side...the hotel is in the best location. A great atmosphere in the Rocks...with markets, shops, pubs, restaurants all right next to the hotel. It was also easy to walk to the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Top points for location!! The staff were all friendly and helpful which was also great. On a negative note the place does need to have some renovations done, especially on the bathroom...our bathroom wasn't the best. I would only recommend this hotel for it's location. The hotel SHOULD NOT charge extra and advertise the King Harbour View Room showing a beautiful view, if the view is blocked by Cruise Ships for the majority of the week.

Room Tip: Don't expect luxury. We assumed that the room that we booked was one of the best.

Dear Linda H

Thank you for your comments and review. Cruise ship season brings many elements to Sydney and it is sometimes fascinating to see such grand ships on the doorstep of the city. I am sorry that this hindered your stay.

I am glad to hear you enjoyed the location and the other elements of the hotel and the Rocks area. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Kind regards

I have stayed at all 3 central Sydney HIs and always on business. All 3 offer a similar standard of service; mid range, comfortable and not at all extravagant - we are not talking Inter-Continental letr's face it. I would however recommend this hotel above the others.

The location is quite excellent for the CBD, tourism and, if you are taking a cruise, a stone's throw from the International Passenger Terminal. It is surprisingly quiet (on the 5th floor) and has a much better street position and ambience than either the Potts Point or Darling Harbour versions. The rooms are comfortable, clean and maintained to a reasonably high standard. Food is presented to a good standard and the breakfast spread is more than adequate. Access to restaurants and transport links are outstanding and the views are incredible if you are lucky enough to have room high up enough on the right side of town. Service is also at a very high standard and, as a PC member, was very well looked after. The pool deck is excellent and thoughtfully, room service will deliver.

Against, the hotel is overcome by beige and whilst the atrium is vast, it is a poor use of space; something i expect the architecht thought was good in concept. Restaurant tables are too close together and the lighting in the open sided corridors is surprisngly dark, almost oppresive. Don't count on any lengths in the pool, the average human might just get one stroke in before turning and there is no gymnasium. Like other reviews expect the rooms to be a bit tired and the bathrooms are tiny. Ensure your aircon is working before you unpack and don't expect any views from the back of the hotel.

It's not perfect but it's a Holiday Inn that beats its contemporaries in the same city.

Room Tip: Get as high as you can facing the harbour

The location was fantastic, and roof top pool was great. Breakfast was great in the restaurant and the staff in the restaurant were really friendly, especially with our one year old daughter.
The only downfall was the state of the bathroom. The bath and shower curtain had mold growing in several places. The sink area and toilet were old and not well kept.
The front counter staff on arrival weren't quite as friendly as you would expect.

Overall we enjoyed our stay.

Dear JustinS8

Thank you for your review. I am glad to hear you enjoyed the facilities such as the location and pool areas. Sorry to hear you felt the hotel was not up to scratch with the bathroom area. Our team here will look into your concerns raised and aim to fix moving forward.

In regards to the service I am quite disappointed and would like to know how they could have been more friendly in this case. As guest experience is an area we take very seriously your detail would be much appreciated.

Kind regards
