“Professional theatre at its best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

We are long time subscribers to the Ensemble - I can recall Hayes Gordon on stage. What a great presence he had and what a commanding voice. After seeing him in "Fiddler" I saw the movie starring Topol and immediately could not help but regard Hayes as by far the greater performer. He may be long gone but you know he is watching.
The theatre "in the round" never disappoints and provides plays of great diversity and depth but never so "arty" that one leaves thinking "what on earth was that all about". One always leaves chuckling - go and see the current play "Camp" - which is hilarious; or leave deep in thought. New actors of great ability just crop up and I never cease to wonder at the depth of talent in this country. The only rider I now reluctantly have is that the Waterside Restaurant has becoming prohibitively expensive and standards have fallen - so you might wish to dine up the street.

“A great little theatre.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

We have subsribed to the theatre for many years now and have thoroughly enjoyed every play we have seen. It is always amazing to walk into the tiny theatre and see what marvellous things have been done to the space! The acting, costuming and overall direction of the plays is always excellent. Highly recommended.

“Actors Project more PLeeeeease!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

The Play The Glass Menagerie was very well acted but I couldn't hear much of the dialogue. The Actors should project their voices more. I was looking forward to seeing this Tennesse Williams and for much of the 2 Acts I was trying to lipread. When the actors were turned away from me I lost all of the dialogue.

“A quirky gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

Small theatre-in-the-round in a converted boatshed, with a bar that sits out over the harbour, and excellent programs. We have been season subscribers in the past and dropped out this year because parking is a bit hard, and public transport isn't an option.

The restaurant downstairs is a bit ordinary for the prices: the yacht club next door is more mundane, but the pricing reflects that. There are great places to eat in Milson's Point.

“Story-tellers supreme”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

I subscribe to this theatre and have done so for years so feel I can speak with some authority on the standard of its productions. They are excellent. The directors have a real eye for how plays should be directed, all other managers (set, wardrobe, etc) work in harmony, great actors always seem to bring out their best and the plays are carefully chosen to tell stories that we can't help but be interested in. Not least of all, the theatre iself is small and intimate. Even if you are sitting in the back row (which isn't very far back at all in this nicely tiered theatre), you can easily get involved in the story before you.

The theatre itself is in a lovely setting and it's worth getting there early and having a coffee while watching the bay and the harbour behond it, with lots of yachts and calming activity.

There is also a restaurant but I've never tried it. It's out of my budget, which is pretty tight.

It always strikes me as a very professional theatre but one where those involved are friendly and with heaps of enthusiasm. If you like theatre, give this a try. It's my favourite Sydney theatre.
