“A great place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013 via mobile

Wow this was the nicest room I've stayed in. From the time we pulled up to vallet parking our experience was wonderful. we felt special. it was nice to be treated so professionally but warm and friendly at the same time. Beautiful extras in the room such as lilac sateen sheets luxurious towels, robes, bedding and extra touches such as the electronic opening blinds mood lighting and rain shower etc, has style, very modern and luxurious. It has a coffee machine big screen tv and is very quiet and so clean and smelt clean. The lobby was spotless smelt fresh and staff were lovely. We got an online special of $210 a fair rate when u compare to other hotels. Definitely plan to stay again.

The Darling is a good hotel in a great quiet location. The staff are quite aloof though and probably need a lesson in courtesy considering the price one pays to stay here. The coffee machine in the room is rather good as are the teas that are provided. We had coffee each morning with scones or Danish pastries which we purchased daily from the mall across the road.

Rooms are average size with the typical amenities. Great location for getting around the city. Casino is just a quick 5minute walk inside the hotel. I liked the hotel overall except checking took to long. Waited for room for 45min after flying over the pond. We were late arriving too.... which should have given them more time to clear rooms. There are a ton of great restaurants in the hotel area. Plus shopping. Business stay was fine. Not sure I would select for a family get away.

This is a new and extremely luxurious hotel in the Star City casino complex in Pyrmont (tell your taxi driver that it's at Star City). From outside the hotel doesn't look particularly fancy, and there's no grand entrance to the lobby. It appears to be a funky and hip hotel at checkin. But then you go upstairs, swipe to enter your room and suddenly it hits you. As you open the door, the curtains automatically and theatrically draw open, revealing a lovely view (my room overlooked the pool) and the lights switch on. The room is huge, with a generous bed and ottoman. The bathroom is all black glass and granite with a separate large shower room with a glorious rain showerhead, a full length mirror and his and hers sinks. Everything is computerised, from the lights to the curtains to television. There are robes in the cupboard and plenty of towels. From your bed you can set an alarm that will turn on the flat screen television and draw back the curtains to wake you up in the morning. There's a pillow menu but I didn't use it because even the normal pillows were incredible - like sinking into a cloud of feathers. I had one of the best night's sleep I've had in a hotel and some of my colleagues joked the next day that they wanted to smuggle the pillows home in their luggage. The only thing to beware of is the minibar - the snacks on the tray and the drinks in the fridge are all on some kind of spring mechanism so if you even pick them up you get charged for them, like comestible land mines. Don't touch anything at the minibar! It's a really petty trick for such a luxury hotel. Despite that a great stay, a beautiful and relaxing hotel. You can walk through to the Star City complex which has an upmarket food court - try Din Tai Fung (a well known dumpling and yum cha chain), Zumbo's (a celebrity patisserie) or if you can get a booking Momofuku (Australian branch of the Michelin-starred New York restaurant, you need to book 10 days in advance).

Stayed here one night as it was close to a friend's wedding. List point here is easier:-
- Not the easiest valet to find. The men working at the casino side entrance look far more professional than the men at The Darling. I honestly thought some random guest was coming to my car to talk to me me when pulled up. They have gone for a modern smart casual look, but totally missed the mark. They didn't have our name in the system, but when we walked to check in, yep, there was our name in the system.
- Rooms are modern and spacious. Not the most private of bathrooms, especially if you are staying with a friend or work colleague. Massive digital printed graphic on the walls and fully automated lights and curtains.
-Beds are HARD. Unless you like hard beds, then great. Combined with the party music that continued nearby till about 2am. I barely slept and at 11pm after a wedding, I'm not about to start complaining about the noise.
- the automated buttons on the wall have a piercing blue light that is so bright I couldn't sleep facing that side of the bed. This small light can't be turned off as it's there to show you where the lights are in the night. Best colour for the night is a red light, but some interior designer with no idea fancied bright blue.
- if you pick up anything from the minibar, like, say the $10 packet of crisps. There is a sensor and you will be automatically charged. Even when you put them back. Bizarre.
- No complimentary bottle of water.
- No roof fan in the toilet.
- Breakfast. HAVE IT IN YOUR ROOM!!! There is no breakfast area defined wholly to The Darling. You have to walk out past the valet, turn right towards the casino and eat breakfast at the Garden Room where EVERYONE eats breakfast. It's 3 star buffet with awful eggs, bland waffles and cheap bottled orange juice. The one area by the window, which looked like a nice area to eat was closed off so we were in a large area which looked like a shopping mall food court.
- Pool area was great. Even though it's winter here, it was a nice day. The spa was roomy and warm. The pool temp needed to be a few degrees warmer, especially for an outdoor pool. Towels were out and ready and chairs were comfortable. Clean area. Had to walk back inside the hotel to get changed and use the toilet and there was only an outdoor shower. They could have thought to add a couple of showers inside too.

This hotel could so easily have been 5 *, but it's not, due to it's deficiencies.

Would I stay again- only in a higher, quieter room. Only if I have breakfast in room and only if we have to go to a wedding nearby again.

Gorgeous hotel, but one quirky problem - piercing blue light illuminating the light switches that you can't turn off. First night we propped up pillows on them to block them out, second night maintenance stuck duct tape over them. Curious. Overall beautiful but needs a remedy for the lights.

This is the last hotel my husband and I stayed at in Australia and it was the best! Like many other people we upgraded to the Jewel Spa Suite, Room 1284 to be exact, and it was well worth the extra money for our honeymoon. The bathroom alone is reason enough. Wonderful shower and amazing round jetted tub. I want one of my own!
Everything about the stay was great: the room was huge, the service, the toiletries, the robes, slippers, towels etc. The bed was so comfortable we never wanted to get up. We also got lucky and had a good view of the harbor. The staff was very accommodating. We arrived there pretty early and they got our room ready a few hours earlier than check in time.
The location for us was really convenient. We walked just about everywhere but did take a cab to the opera house.
The whole Star complex is really nice. Lots of restaurants and shops. It's also a short walk to the harbor where there are even more restaurants and shops :)
Overall I would definitely recommend it but if you take a cab make sure you know the address. Our cab driver had never heard of it!

Room Tip: Upgrade to a suite!
