“Ancient bathroom, loud obnoxious receptionist. Great view”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2013

Stayed here for a night before flying overseas in August. The first thing that took me was the receptionist. She has a loud booming voice, so that everybody across the entire floor could hear every word of my business. I was standing right in front of her and am not hard of hearing. At the end of her display, I kindly asked if I could pre-pay the room as we had an early flight in the morning. To which I was told "You should have told me earlier" because she had already placed a guarantee on my card. And then stood there questioning whether I still wanted to pre-pay.

We were given a room with a fantastic view over Woolloomooloo towards the harbour bridge. The only positive point of this hotel. The bathroom was unacceptable, I have never seen a Mercure with such a poor standard bathroom. Renovation is desperately needed here.

The room was large, but with just a bed and a seat at the desk. There was no couch or anywhere else to sit, despite the ample space in the room.

The Holiday Inn is across the road. If you cant get a room there, your money would probably be better spent at the F1.

This hotel is very basic, if you pay for the dearest room, you get a view of the Harbour bridge and opera house but that's it, the location is very handy, right next door to kings cross station but visitors should be aware that this location is not always safe after dark. The check in ladies were very friendly and the reception is very lit up and modern, The rooms however are very dark, dark brown carpet, walls and you get the picture, also makes it difficult to see if it's clean or not. The TV is small and old, the bathtub is too small to use but the shower was good, the air conditioner stopped working half way through the night and as it's not possible to open the windows it got very stuffy and warm. It's a 2 star hotel and as Sydney Hotels are very expensive, it is still value for money if you are more interested in the location. The check out was a bit average with an Indian Gentleman not interested in greeting me or asking if I had a nice night, when I asked him to call a cab for me, he said that they don't do this and they are outside.

Was I surprised at this gem. I thought I was supposed to be in "Potts Point" but its actually at the X. We were a tad nervous. Turned out we didn't need to be, the place is great, across the road from the station with very easy access to the city, and oh those views. We're coming back.

Very dissappointing, the first time I stayed at a Accor group hotel and i am unimpressed. While the room was good, one can get the same across the street at Holiday Inn. What really killed it for me was the attitude of the front desk staff - especially the "manager" - they clearly were doing me a favor putting me up!! Since it was the first impression of the hotel, I guess its stayed with me. The stay while comfortable, I couldn't help wishing time and again that i was at the Holiday Inn across the street!!

Pros:

1. Very convenient location right on top of Kings Cross subway station. Just 3 stops from Central subway station so therefore you can get to anymore in the Sydney greater area with ease.

2. Service at reception was very courteous and they arrange an airport shuttle that is more affordable than paying for the AirTrain gate access.

4. The bedroom area is modern and clean. There was also a safe.

5. Nice lobby and good security.

Cons

1. Bathroom is horribly outdated. Blue tiles everywhere that was cracking and patched with mismatched white ones. Sink hardware is very old and lets out a huge gush of water with the slightest touch. As a result, the counter was wet all the time and we had to keep on cleaning it with a towel. There was also a large pipe that connected the bathtub with the toilet. I have never seen this before and found it very strange. Must be old plumbing....

2. Although this hotel is called Mercure Potts Point, its really in the Kings Cross neighborhood, which is the red light district of Sydney. We were awoken multiple times with loud noises from the street at 4am although we were on the 7th floor. There are multiple clubs and hostels in the area. I can't imagine how people on the lower floors can sleep.

3. wifi is $25. They do allow for 30 free minutes in the lobby
