“went downhill quickly”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2011

the first time I went to Smith's on Bayswater it was such a wonderful experience, the wine was decanted, you could choose which region the steak was from and whether it was grain or grace fed and the service was impeccible.
No longer is the wine decanted, the steak was terrible and chewy (i didnt even finish it) and the servces was horrendous . We felt like we were being rushed out and the waitress was so abrupt, interrupting our conversation and standing at the end of the table barking orders at us.
i wouldnt go back any time soon

“If you love meat, and you love wine, this is the place for you”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2011

Well the change form the old but good Bayswater Brasserie to the new and funky Smiths on Bayswater Butcher and Wine merchant could be met with some skepticism and possibly a nostalgic twinge. However I was delighted to find that the man behind this ambitious makeover was none other than Kingsley Smith formerly of the legendary Kingsley's and Chophouse.
I say delighted because I love meat, and I love wine and Kingsley is an expert at both.
The menu is simple but imaginative, the atmosphere is fabulous and the service is relaxed but efficient.

We shared a charcuterie board which was excellent, especially the jamon and the pickled vegetables.
My friend had the meatloaf for a main while I opted for a crab linguine. Both were cooked to perfection and thoroughly enjoyed.
Our avocado cheese cake for dessert was a highlight and we both left feeling satisfied and happy.
I have also been to Smiths for late night cocktails and can highly recommend it as the bar staff are amazing, the quality of beverages is super and the cocktail list is mature and imaginative. Try a Vespa, it'll knock your socks off.
The Bays might be dead, but Viva Smiths!

“Don't waste your time”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2011

This beautiful space was, for many many years, a restaurant called The Bayswater Brasserie - a favourite local haunt, always reliable, always pleasant. For approx the past year or so it's been Smith's, with the lovely back bar gone and the food focus turned to meat.
Despite hearing/reading poor reviews, we decided to give this a try for Mother's Day lunch (the menu looked good). What a shame! The restaurant looks shabby and worn (though the lovely tree in the atrium-like central dining area is still there) and the food took forever to arrive. The place was not full, there was plenty of staff, still to get any attention we almost had to set up road-blocks. We asked for a cocktail menu, it did not arrive. We asked for toast twice, it finally came - without butter. My Reubens sandwich was good....when I asked for mustard the waiter told me I should not have it because there was dressing on the sandwich. I politely told him I would like it, PLEASE.
Only one young girl (from Estonia) who had been working there 3 days seemed to care about service. Everyone else was rushing around looking very busy, but getting nothing done. The food (sandwiches and omlettes) took nearly 50 minutes to arrive. When we finally got the bill, no one asked if we enjoyed our meal, no one thanked us for coming, no one saw us out. What a waste of a lovely space.

“Easy to miss, difficult to forget”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2011

We recently moved to Sydney in the Rushcutters Bay area and we have been busy discovering our new surroundings, including cafes and restaurants. Smith on Bayswater is easy to miss, perhaps because its 'end of the block' position, or its proximity to some cheap backpackerish bars.

However, since we went there for the first time a few weeks ago we have gone back several times. The atmosphere is elegant, yet relaxed, thanks to an efficient and friendly service, good lighting and a bistro-type ambiance. You can dine in the front veranda, in the main restaurant area or in the patio on the back. All areas are cool and comfortable.

The food is top notch and well presented. The menu is simple and true to the restaurant's specialty: meat. You can choose your own cut and discuss it with the chef if you have any questions.

The meat is unreal(loved the Wagyu beef and the bresaola for starters), the sides are excellent (good chips and great salad bar) and even the desserts are pretty imaginative and tasty.

The wine list if good , with few good options.

The prices are relatively high - but if you feel lucky they have a Monday special where you can play 'head or tails' with the waiter to win a 50% discount (this offer might not be available when you go though!)

Overall a great place: try it and you might find yourself hooked!
