We serendipitously happened upon Four ate Five in Crown St ,Surry Hills, on a grey, wet and blustery morning, after a visit to the Brett Whitely Gallery nearby. The little cafe was brimming with people, most of them apparently locals. Immediately welcomed by a most congenial hostess, we were asked if we would mind sharing a communal table, and within minutes, were comfortably installed, and had orders for coffee (excellent) and muffins (prepared on the premises) taken. A minor delay occurred when a huge wind gust brought the umbrellas crashing down on some hardy customers waiting at tables outside , but it was good to see how swiftly the concerned staff responded to their plight, and also took the trouble to apologize to us for the interruption to our service. My muffin was orange and poppy seed, toasted, and delicious, while strawberry and ricotta versions were devoured with appreciative gusto by my companions. The bohemian, busy, but homely ambience of this tiny cafe and the very real hospitality of the staff make it a place we will look forward to returning to on any future Sydney sojourns.
