“Friendly and Charming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014

We stayed at the Econo Lodge at the last minute when our couch-surfing option fell through. Our whole reason for being in Sydney was to see the band that was playing at the Macquarie Hotel and it's right upstairs. We weren't traveling super cheaply so the $105 we paid for a standard room was fine and the room was clean and comfortable. Tom at reception was professional and friendly, plus helped us out with finding the cheapest parking option - not easy for a tourist in Sydney!

About a 15-20 minute drive from the airport and an easy walk to central station. Free wifi, tea/coffee and complimentary shortbread, all good. Only downer was the shower curtain's inefficiency which meant my towel got wet, but there were extra towels so it worked out fine. Curtains actually blocked out the light from the street, which was great, but the traffic noise starts early. We stayed in the bar until after the band finished so couldn't say if the noise carries up to the rooms or not.

Officially the hotel is undergoing renovations, but I actually really loved the "distressed" look of the walls coming up the stairs. The lift was funky and old-school, a bit cramped, but felt like being in a 1950s detective movie. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms on Wentworth Ave side get early morning traffic noise.

Stayed here a couple weeks ago while renovations were happening at home. Brilliant location, and staff were very friendly, rooms are what you pay for. Stayed in a standard double ($120 for the night from memory), view was definitely lacking (not a priority for myself, and understandable for this price. The gent at reception did show me one of the 'executive' rooms when requested, which had a much nicer street view.) The hotel itself feels a bit rustic, which has its own charm to it, and the bar downstairs was good for a meal and a few beers. Overall, a decent place to stay, would definitely recommend to others, however, if you're very particular about your accommodation I would suggest taking one of the more expensive rooms, the standards are nothing special but location and price make up for it

The Econo-Lodge Sydney South is centrally located and close to buses and the train station. It is reasonably priced and the accommodations are adequate. This hotel is full of stained glass windows and the lounge and restaurant are furnished with antiques. The building dates back to the late 1800's or early 1900's. True travelers will appreciate the unique experience.

Outside of India where the term 'hotel' could potentially refer to a wide range of accommodations, I would have to say this was the worst hotel I've ever seen. First of all, my room was directly above the private function area on the floor below and the room was rocking! If you want dance music at maximum volume shaking you around in bed, this place is for you! Complimentary earplugs would be nice if you wanted any hope at all of getting to sleep.

You'll also like the facilities if you're a fan of broken equipment. Television, alarm clock, curtain rails, shower, windows, blinds, split door frames, these rooms had a broken one of everything. And it was good and filthy too. The thing the toilet brush hangs in looked like it had the combined gross filth of the last decade. Gaggingly disgusting. The linen was threadbare and visibly stained. The unemptied rubbish bins were a nice touch. I always feel a room has a much more lived in homely feel if the rubbish bin has used tissues and the last guest's unfinished Chinese takeaway.

I wanted to head out of the hotel at 7am but reception didn't open until 8am and I wanted to move rooms to get away from the noise and to get a working shower. I hung around until 8am and then another 15-20 minutes more but no one showed up. The reception number rang in the empty office and didn't forward to a mobile. I eventually gave up and phoned them later in the day when someone could be bothered coming to work. Checking out the next day I heard another guest at reception complaining that his shower wasn't working either so maybe consider whether you're a person who likes to shower when you stay here because it's not a management priority here to make sure you have a working shower.

The rooms change was a mixed bag: noise was a bit further away and shower worked, but alarm clock and television didn't. Still filthy. I saw the same notice in both rooms that other reviewers have commented on. A warning that the shower can set off the fire alarm and if it does due to you leaving the bathroom door open while you shower, you will have to pay for the fire service call out (not, you'll notice, the hotel's responsibility to fit quality fire sensors that don't trigger with bathroom steam like everyone else has.)

The rooms were advertised at $99. There were posters everywhere, down at street level, outside, all around the bar, in the stair wells and around reception. Except that the price was $120. The guy on duty said the posters were there just to get people to climb up the two stories to reception and it was the manager's decision, he was just following instructions. How lame is that!?

There are much nicer, cleaner rooms for around $80 in Sydney if you take a private double at a hostel or pay another $50 and go to a proper hotel. Stay away from this place though, it's a total dive. Nice beer downstairs in the bar though but you don't have to stay in this place to enjoy that.

I literally wouldn't stay here again if they offered me the room for free. What is the point of a hotel room above the private function floor where no one in the rooms above are going to be able to sleep if a function's on?

It's not fair to blame the staff for these issues (everyone I met was warm and friendly) when this is a management issue. It's their choice around the advertising, maintenance schedule, not solving problems, spot checking room cleanliness, not offering a discount on Fri and Sat nights when the functions are likely to be on, etc.

Stay away from this place unless you're there to drink or dance and scream your head off at a private function.

We chose this hotel as most others were either booked out or far too expensive.
This hotel was promoted on several sites as 3 star - but I'm not sure where the stars were - we did not experience them.
That said, the hotel is in an ideal location, close to public transport and shops.
Service at reception was friendly and helpful, however reception is located on the second floor, accessible either by stairway or a tiny lift.
We stayed in a twin room with a very small shower/toilet area.
In the bedroom, the lamps were not working, and neither was the TV. There were no wardrobes, just hooks for clothes - space was scarce.
The beds were comfortable and the bed linen was pristine.
But.....despite these criticisms, there was something rather quirky about this hotel, and I left with quite mixed feelings.
If you're looking for a well appointed room, this is not the place, but if you can accept the deficits and can laugh at your surroundings, and you're only staying a night or two, then maybe it can be considered.

Room Tip: Bring ear plugs as the noise from the pub can rise through the floor

Given what we paid for this hotel ($220, but most other options were more than $400), it sucks. It is actually just a few rooms upstairs from a pub, reminds me of cheap hotels in Europe. No closet to hang up clothes, no bedside lamps, halogen lamp in the room was broken. Did manage to log on to free internet from the pub that worked well. There are big signs in the reception saying they have rooms from $99. At that price is Sydney it would be OK to have this standard.
