“Clean, exciting with a fantastic location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014 via mobile

Conveniently located on The Rocks! Stayed in a family room with a double bed and 2 bunk beds and ensuite. Very clean room and shower/toilet.
The whole building was beautifully designed. It's actually built over an archeological site with the uncovered ruins visible. What an awesome idea!
Very helpful staff. Close to restaurants/pubs/bars/the opera house and harbour bridge.
Kitchen was clean and large...they even have a mini cafe where you can get your espresso fix and buy breakfast if necessary.
TV lounge on rooftop with adjacent open area that has great views!
Stayed 3 nights...felt very safe. No loud noise or disruptions.
Definitely would recommend this place to anyone keen to stay close to the highlights of Sydney. Price is reasonable considering the location...
Any avoid getting off at Circular Quay train station if you've got luggage as it's a pretty steep walk up the hill to the hostel...something we found out the hard way. Apparently Wynyard Station is easier. Wish we had known before making trudging up that hill.

It's a great place to stay in Sydney if you have the time and want to enjoy all at the YHA experience has to offer and the Sydney Harbour YHA is exceptional in that sense. However, if you're only going to head to the room to sleep and spend the whole day sightseeing...it is a little costly.

From our room we managed to get free wifi from the "Sydney City Free Wifi Service" or something like that...it wasn't great but it was free and sufficient for emails and low bandwidth surfing.

One of the greatest thing about my stay was that all the staff were so friendly and welcoming! :)

For a hostel, it was very well facilitated. All rooms (I believe) have their own ensuite. There are many common areas to make use of, and the location was perfect!

This was my first time in a hostel, and I shared it with 3 others in a family room. I was very pleasantly surprised, and it was everything I needed.

Thank you so much for a wonderful stay!

We stayed here recently and could not fault. Had a twin ensuite room-nothing missing, got tea and coffee in room, view out over the Opera House. Great facilities for cooking available.
About 10min walk to Circular Quay for boats or airport train. The rocks are up a fairly steep slope so walking with cases from the train was a bit of a pain which we didn't know at the time.
Lovely restaurants around the Rocks. Would definitely come back!

Hi Lizzie. Thanks for your review and glad you enjoyed the hostel. We do STRONGLY recommend that guests with luggage do not use Circular Quay station but instead get off at Wynyard station. From there it is an easy flat five minute walk to the hostel. There is a map and detailed instructions that can be printed out on our website.
We look forward to seeing you again sometime!

I loved this hostel, and this is coming from someone who had stayed at the Four Seasons the week before.

Great location in the Rocks. You feel very safe and secure in the area. Lovely big room ( a 4 share room full of girls). Lovely big locker with a socket in to charge your stuff. Next to your bed there was a shelf with a charging socket and your own light. Air Con is switched on by talking to the reception staff. Lovely big modern en suite toilet....

Didn't use the kitchen other than to fill up my water bottle so cannot comment on that... Used the locker storage to store my bags after the 10am check out.

Really enjoyed myself and the staff on reception were friendly and very helpful. No wonder this hostel is winning heaps of awards- well deserved.

We stayed here on two occasions, firstly in a 4 bed dorm and then in a 6 bed dorm. I would recommend this place as it's modern, comfortable, clean, spacious in terms of common area/kitchen and the location is 5 min walk from the OH. Also, the views from the top floor are fantastic. However, I personally found the place a bit soulless...maybe as it has a 'new' feel to it. I found some staff to be a tad pompous/aloof...however not unfriendly or unhelpful. One point I would make is that the rooms are very warm unless the air con is switched on. To activate the air con you need to lock the windows and ask reception to switch it on, which is simple enough, but they need to make this clear to all guests (verbally), as opening windows turns the air con off. Overall, we would stay here again, as the pros considerably outweigh the cons.

I have been here with my boyfriend in a 6 dorm, because the double/twin were too expensive. If you want to stay 24 hours per day in the terrace, then go there... Otherwise don't waste your money and choose something else.

For:

Clean hostel, big kitchen, nice view from the terrace, locker in the room with the plus inside so you can lock your valuables while they are charging.

Against:

Expensive, especially for what they give you. 6 dorm with a toilet that of course you Have to share with the other guys: this means that you can hear them going to toilet during the night, OR doing the shower early in the morning etc. Is better a big shared toilet outside the room! They don't provide the lock for the locker in the room, but guest what... They can sell you one! No luggages deposit for free... You Have to PAY for it. Staff not helpful at all, a girl was yelling at me just Because I hadn't hear what she said. Lots of stairs to Reach the hostel... Terrible with heavy luggages. When you check out, you Have to bring the sheets at the reception, they will ask you to do it.

Don't go, it's a waste, really!

Hi Jessica
Thanks for your review, and YHA looks at all reviews. Your comments particularly on service and staff will be looked into by the manager as we try to have the highest level of customer service.

Just to clarify one point though - we strongly recommend to guests that they do not use Circular Quay station when travelling to the hostel with luggage. Wynyard Station is a flat easy walk to the YHA - there is a map and directions that can be printed off on our website.

The Good:
1) The view. INCREDIBLE views of the Opera House from the common areas and from many of the rooms (including ours).
2) The rooms. Very spacious, clean and generally well appointed.

The Mediocre:
1) The location. Yes it is in The Rocks. Yes it is only a 15 minute walk to the Opera House and only 5 minutes to the bridge. However, this area is generally a business district and as such, there are fewer grocery stores, bottle shops and restaurants than in other areas. Depends on if you want to travel to see sights or travel to do the basics (e.g. grocery shopping, shop for a forgotten item).
2) The kitchen. Awesome individual cooking pods keep the ruckus in the kitchen to a minimum by minimizing interruptions by other aspiring chefs. However, there is a lack of utensils such as knives, graters, peelers, wooden spoons, etc.

The Terribble:
1) The air conditioning. Sydney is hot in the summer. If you plan to use the AC, each time you want it turned on, you must walk down to the front desk and ask them to turn it on. This is obnoxious. The system already turns off when the windows are open or guests leave the room. Why do guests also have to go ask the desk to use it?
2) Internet. Expensive and slow. It is ridiculous to charge YHA members for internet. I don't care that the Four Seasons and Marriott charge - hostel guests expect free, fast internet. The hostel literature justifies it by saying that other nearby hotels charge and that some guests don't use internet and therefore shouldn't have to shoulder the cost. Well, some guests don't use the TV room, the kitchen, the movie room, the free pancakes on Wednesdays, but guess what, they paid. Internet should be included and it needs to be upgraded.

Room Tip: Many rooms have a view of the Opera House, it might pay to ask!

Hi Jeff

Thanks for your review and we appreciate all comments, good and bad.

Just to let you know, when YHA built this hostel it made a very deliberate decision to try and build the most environmentally friendly accommodation possible. Air con is rooms when they are empty is not environmentally sustainable, so we do have an on request system. This has contributed (along with water tanks, recycling, solar power and other initiatives) in the hostel having a much lower carbon footprint than other hostels.

The internet service should not have been running slowly, so your comment has been passed to our external supplier for further investigation.

We hope you enjoy the rest of your visit to Australia.
