“Very Good meal at a good pricde”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2012

The place is very relaxed. We dined alfresco and watched the passing parade, always interesting on King street. I had a steak, it was cooked to order and reasonable value for money. All in an enjoyable meal.

“Quintessential Newtown, Funky, ecclectic and relaxed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2012

If you are looking for a showcase restaurant with design features and staff in uniforms, then this is not for you. Corellis is quintessential Newtown (inner city Sydney, university locale and diverse crowd) - one of the few cafes with more than a couple of tables outside for people watching and providing dog friendly, group friendly, lone diners and family friendly service to loyal locals and drop ins.

The food provided is a good variety of all day breakfasts, meals and specials - it would be in the band of consistently good rather than foodie excellent, but its identity is not espoused to be polished nor gourmet. Meals are of reasonable or more than reasonable size, are well priced and there is a reason locals return so good means good.

Sure staff are not in the white and black uniform brigade and dress in their various tribe appearance so may appear disconcerting to the unfamiliar - all part of the diversity of Newtown and for most part the staff, certainly the core staff, are friendly and helpful, even when they are slammed as generally occurs on weekends with full capacity and locals waiting 'in the wings' for tables. Would hate to think that the hard working core staff would be tarred with accusations of lack of service. Though have to be honest and say that have had occasional grumpy service from some casuals, now apparently gone.

So fine dining, it is not, but neither is it a low quality place. Corellis is a Newtown favourite of locals for coffee and cake, or good and fresh meals at reasonable prices with great location on King Street with long opening hours. If you want to experience inner Sydney favourites as the locals do, then this is the place for you.

“Absolutely appalling service...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2012

I went to this restaurant after swearing I'd never do it again as a result of a previous visit where they kept us waiting for over an hour for our food, which never actually showed up. Not only did they misplace our order, they were grumpy with us for walking out and wanted us to pay for the lukewarm coffees we had be served for the wait.

I took my brothers who were visiting from Tasmania. We asked for a table for four, and the waitress was very huffy about having to push two tables together to accommodate our request. To be honest, this should have been when we walked out but we were hungry, so persisted.

We were served coffees fairly quickly by a polite waitress, who also took our order. She was nothing special, not friendly or welcoming, but took our order with no errors.

The staff looked as though they'd just rolled out of bed, were dressed appallingly and loudly complained about not being given tips ("even the non-australians out there didn't tip" was a precise, un-embelished quote.) The food was fine, but very ordinary. It's expensive for what it is, and is not a pleasant place to be if you want to be able to speak to your companions and enjoy your meal.

Absolutely horrendous, it really is shame on me though for giving them a second chance. Needless to say I will not be giving them a third and will make sure I tell anyone who will listen about our experiance!

“Newtown cafe, good people watching, good food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2011

This cafe makes a really great Chai Latte using fresh spices with latte milk over it. My other fave is the scrambled eggs on amazing sourdough bread. Looking for naughty desserts? They make them onsite sticky date so rich you should share it, cheesecake and wonderful waffles.
