“Delicious Japanese Kushiyaki”

Japanese chef Kimitaka Azuma’s career started at the young age of 16. From his home town in Japan’s southern island Kyushu, he moved to Tokyo and established a successful career as a chef throughout Asia. In 1990 a tourist boom in Australia drew him to Sydney where he saw an opportunity to establish a restaurant unlike any other in Sydney at the time.

His first, self-named, award-winning restaurant Azuma was the first Japanese restaurant in Sydney NOT to serve the stereotypical dishes of sushi, tempura and teriyaki. But as the restaurant grew in success and was relocated to larger premises in Chifley Tower in Sydney’s central business district, those dishes were eventually allowed back onto the menu.

The success continued and thus Azuma Kushiyaki was born in 2008 as a spin-off to Azuma’s original restaurant.

Kushiyaki is the name for Japanese grilled meat and vegetables served on skewers and is part of the Japanese Izakaya experience where Japanese salaryman traditionally go after work to have a drink.

Kushiyaki Bar & Grill is the first of it’s kind in Sydney and you will find a refreshing selection of authentic and delicious grilled dishes which prove that there is more to Japanese cuisine than just raw fish. But if you prefer to stick to something more classic, as I did on my lunchtime visit, then the set menu with a selection of sushi, teriyaki chicken, tempura will delight you.

The service is exceptionally quick, the food fabulously fresh and delicious and the prices very reasonable. There is a separate menu for lunch time and dinner which you can check on their website.

Having grown up eating at most of Sydney’s Japanese establishments I can confidently say this is one of the best.

The food, authentic Japanese and great Sake. The service is great and the price is very reasonable. I like to pop in for a quick lunch

“Nice Relaxing Kushiyaki Restaurant. Goes well with Japanese Beer”

I am a big fan of it's sister restaurant, Azuma on Chiefly Plaza. Azuma Kushiyaki is a more lay back restaurant. As stated in the previous review, this type of restaurant is not common in Sydney. It's a more up market type of Kushiyaki restaurant.

We ordered the $55 per head banquet. The salmon salad was delicious and so was the sushis and the sushi rolls. Some of the BBQ screwers are excellent however some are a bit ordinary. I think overal it is still an above average dining experience.

The service was quite good.

“Average - or less tasting food”

I read a review somewhere that really talked up the yakatori (ie meats on a stick) served here. I like sushi too. Both were well below what i would consider to be good japanese food.

The chicken and beef on a stick were very tender but they lacked any sort of flavour - being bland. I recall when i was eating the chicken thinking to myself this taskes like boiled chichen. The menu stated chicken breast with plumb mayo - their was nothing plum or mayo about it - just tastless. They should at least serve a sauce with this type of food if they are going to cook it that way.

Sushi can be ordered in two ways simple cone type wrap (Hand Roll) which results in the nori flavour dominating everything else because the rice is not well prepared , lacks rice wine and vinegar taste - bland. The other way it comes is as an Inside Out Roll - nothing good about this either. The tuna has lost its beautiful colour and lacks and presence in the flavour of the roll. The sushi was well below any japanes resturant expectation.

The service however is outstanding, the food comes quick and the staff are very attentive. I could not believe how quick. the food came when i ordered it. The resturant was half full of seated customers, I can only conclude that the kitchen staff are not putting the required effort into the meal prep' and need to be directed by someone who knows what they are doing.

The atmosphere is very Japanese as you will see from the exterior picture - when you see something like this, you expect to eat jap' food - this was not. I will look elsewhere next time,

“Hidden Japanese Wonder”

I really like coming back to this place as it is located in a rather concealed location but it certainly doesn't lack in quality of food. There are not many restaurants that do this type of cuisine well in Sydney. A few of the dishes are really standouts. The gyutan miso was excellent and just the rich portion size as it was rather rich. The seared tuna salad was very nice and will certainly appeal to a wide range of customers who like the strong ginger taste. I really enjoyed the seared tuna sushi here which was in my opinion one of the best Japanese dishes served here in Sydney, Simply done but very very tasty and not to meantion fresh. The only downside of this place is that it can get quite busy as we had to wait for our food for quite a bit. Adding to this, the decor utilizes a bit of wood especially in the private room which does expedite the reflection of sound.
