Went here with my wife because it was convenient during an overnight stay in Rozelle. The pub is pleasant enough and obviously popular. Good beer on tap (Balmain pilsner definitely worth a try), with lots of fake Irish kitsch on the walls. In terms of the general atmosphere of the place the dining room is a bit incongruous, with linen table cloths and napkins and waiter/waitress service. The menu contains two sections, one a reproduction of the bar menu, and the other a bit more up market in intention. You can check the menu out online to get an idea. The restaurant was half full on a Sunday night, with one loud party enjoying their selections from the bar menu, but this tended to give the restaurant a bit of a pub dining room feel, out of place with the linen and black and white attired wait staff.
We had a duck and asian green salad, which was OK, not too much duck, and it was in very small bits, with a very sweet dressing. I ordered the 400g rib eye, with pepper sauce. Steak was well short of 400g, probably about 300 and instead of rare as ordered it came well done. I did not complain as it had been a long day and we just wanted to ea, but it was a nice piece of meat ruined. Pepper sauce was very inoffensive. Maybe there is somewhere in Sydney that knows how to do proper pepper steak, but this was not it. Wife's fish (forget what it was - looked like blue eye) with a roast summer vegetable salad and a pestoish seasoning would have been a reasonable dish, but again the fish was over cooked. Shame. Wines by the glass were not great, Best was the chardonnay, but the Cotes du Rhone and Cabernet tried were so so.
There was nothing to complain about in regards to the service, and when I gave feedback about the steak on paying the bill the matter was resolved without question and most satisfactorily. Full marks on this score.
The main problem with this place is that it does not know what it is - pub bistro or up market eatery. I reckon it should get rid of the linen and concentrate on good pub food properly cooked. What good is a mod oz style menu when the kitchen over cooks a simple steak or piece of fish?
