“Great pub food in 2 places”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013 via mobile

I have had meals here in (a) bar - beer garden and bar - same food ( b) restaurant.
I have enjoyed both in different venues - one pub service the other restaurant service. The food is excellent my #1 dish is the beef and Stout Pie, absolutely brilliant washed down with a Balmain Beer. Served to you at your location.
The restaurant is equally as good with good service from capable waitresses. The steak - ordered " blue" came as requested. Good quality and perfectly cooked. The menu is different and more extensive with higher quality dishes to choose from. Prices are higher but the venue and service make up for it.
The clientele are not excessively noisy and you can enjoy a conversation without shouting in the few times I have been here. A rugby match may be different with the Irish hint.
Beer is good and service friendly and efficient.

“Not sure what it is”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2012

Went here with my wife because it was convenient during an overnight stay in Rozelle. The pub is pleasant enough and obviously popular. Good beer on tap (Balmain pilsner definitely worth a try), with lots of fake Irish kitsch on the walls. In terms of the general atmosphere of the place the dining room is a bit incongruous, with linen table cloths and napkins and waiter/waitress service. The menu contains two sections, one a reproduction of the bar menu, and the other a bit more up market in intention. You can check the menu out online to get an idea. The restaurant was half full on a Sunday night, with one loud party enjoying their selections from the bar menu, but this tended to give the restaurant a bit of a pub dining room feel, out of place with the linen and black and white attired wait staff.

We had a duck and asian green salad, which was OK, not too much duck, and it was in very small bits, with a very sweet dressing. I ordered the 400g rib eye, with pepper sauce. Steak was well short of 400g, probably about 300 and instead of rare as ordered it came well done. I did not complain as it had been a long day and we just wanted to ea, but it was a nice piece of meat ruined. Pepper sauce was very inoffensive. Maybe there is somewhere in Sydney that knows how to do proper pepper steak, but this was not it. Wife's fish (forget what it was - looked like blue eye) with a roast summer vegetable salad and a pestoish seasoning would have been a reasonable dish, but again the fish was over cooked. Shame. Wines by the glass were not great, Best was the chardonnay, but the Cotes du Rhone and Cabernet tried were so so.

There was nothing to complain about in regards to the service, and when I gave feedback about the steak on paying the bill the matter was resolved without question and most satisfactorily. Full marks on this score.

The main problem with this place is that it does not know what it is - pub bistro or up market eatery. I reckon it should get rid of the linen and concentrate on good pub food properly cooked. What good is a mod oz style menu when the kitchen over cooks a simple steak or piece of fish?

“Still a great pub experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

Returned to The Welcome after a few years having heard of management changes, etc. and wondering whether the old feel and standards had been retained.
All the former glory is intact and the drinking and lunching experience is as good as ever. Good pub fare with a sound wine list at fair prices. Everything clean and tidy; food good quality and well prepared; and the service good with a friendly touch. Decor is atmospheric and fits the neighborhood. Parking at the door was a pleasure.
Would go back for a relaxing time...

“Great local”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

Just moved to Rozelle and have tried a few local places but this is now my new local. I've eaten here 3-4 times and each time has been great. It serves a food pint of Guinness and a UK pint. The staff are really friendly and welcoming. Dodo worth a visit...

“Eclectic Pub with Friendly Staff, Great Atmosphere!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

Have visited the welcome 3 times in the last 2 months and safe to say it will become one of our regular haunts. I can't comment on any other day besides Saturday as we head in for the band from 3 to 7pm which has been performing for over 10 years. 3 or more guys mix up the vocals so there is always something new & interesting. It's an eclectic mix of electric and acoustic guitar playing the classics (rock / folk / alternative) which results in a casual & entertaining environment until we near the 7pm mark when the whole bar up is up on their feet asking for more. The food is good for the setting, some items appear over-priced and the menu lacking in variety. Out the back the beer garden allows for relaxation whilst soaking up the sun or watching sport on the big screen. Staff are great, always wearing a smile and happy to have a laugh with the patrons. We love the traditional set-up of being able to sit at the bar. I'm sure it's quieter during the week but Saturdays are golden with a packed-bar (never wait too long to be served mind you), fun-loving patrons and of course the Band!!
