“Value and Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2011

I have stayed here a few times over the years and have never had a problem. The rooms are basic but have everything you need and the bathroom was similarly well-equipped. Most importantly, the bed was comfortable and I had a good night's sleep.

This hotel is primarily a place to stay but does have a restaurant (though I did not try it). However, the best thing about the hotel is the location and price. It is on George Street in the midst of Chinatown with fabulous restaurants and shops nearby, and for $80-ish for a queen room in the off-season, it’s great value for the location.

The only bad thing is the hotel's lack of a cancellation policy. For that reason, I would probably not use the Great Southern Hotel for an event more than a week or so ahead of time.

Stay here for business a lot. The location is perfect, the rooms are small but neat and the hotel can't be beaten for value in Sydney. My first choice whenever I have to stay there on business. As long as you don't want to hang out in the room all day, cleanliness and value is my main criteria and this place wins hands down.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade (some rooms are bigger)

Arrived on 7 April, staff were lovely and gave my elderly parents and I 2 rooms on 1st floor. Got to the rooms and was overcome by paint fumes with no adequate ventilation. The painters were regularly in the lift and told us they werejust doing the halls. We complained and were moved immediately to separate floors!

The next night my mum had 2 cockroaches on her side of the bed and pillow!! Not what you expect from a 4 star hotel!! My room was ok and no bugs! Again mentioned it to staff who made a note of it and gave us free luggage storage for our trouble.

Once we left the great southern we moved to a 3 star travelodge out of the city which was amazing and would be easily 4-5 star in comparison!!

This hotel is in a great location and you can get a cheap full English breakfast across the road at the YHA for $8.40 they also do great meals better than thie great southern hotel for 1/2 the price.

This hotel is great for 2 things: price and location ( only across road from free shuttle bus).

Don't expect a 4 star experience because you will be disappointed! You do get what you pay for and so if you want cheap accommodation in a central location and don't mind too much aboutthe look of the place and cockroaches then this hotel is for you. However I seriously think this hotel should re-rated to a 3 stat at best!!!

Expensive, but worth the cost. More for older people or families. There is a nice bar outside the front where you can watch the world go by.
Good location on road wehere all buses run to circular quay and main city.

Room Tip: They keep your bags safe if u want to leave them.

We checked in @ 9am coming straight from airport. Our luggage was stowed @ $2 a bag - we'd done our homework & knew of the 2% surcharge for credit card hence we had $50 cash. Reception asked if they could deduct the luggage storage charge from the $50 deposit when we leave - kewl! :0) Our room wasn't ready so we went for a nose around. The Hotel is Heritage, meaning old not new, but it also means "olde charm" and charming it was! :0) The restaurant was full & people looked happy. The venue was super close to ALL major transport systems i.e.the train, monorail, bus all within a max of five mins walk from Hotel. Hotel in CBD & Paddys Market and Chinatown were literally on the back door. We came back to our 15sqm (incl. bathroom) "STANDARD", "very CLEAN" room and found it to be very pleasant. The tonings were quiet and soft with a lovely, soft, warm, lightweight blue bed cover on fresh, clean, crisp white linen. The room contained a window, air cond unit, double bed, two bedside tables (compendium on one), wall mounted TV, desk with ethernet connection jack, a manrobe and also a cupboard that housed a mini-fridge. On top was a tray containing a hot water jug, cups & absolute basics for hot drinks. The wheelchair-friendly bathroom was a nice size with a shower, toilet & vanity, hair dryer, tissues, s x mini soap, 1 x mini shampoo & two rolls toilet tissue. We took a nap and awoke to one working light. Dippy us phoned reception who let us know that our keycard that opened our room & worked the lift also needed to be popped into the light thing by the door. If we'd read the card on the desk we would've seen that haha!! Yes at times we could hear the "neighbors" (we were in Rm 330) ... but hey ... it was after midnight and their TV was up loud but it was "dull" noise and didn't hinder our experience at all. Our travel consultant was given the brief of: something budget conscious (NZ$150 max) that was close to airport, city, all forms of transportation, shopping venues, sights etc. We didn't want obtuse decor' just something quiet because we were only sleeping in the room as our days were pretty full-on. She did exceptionally well we feel. We read reviews on this sight and were worried but those fears were not necessary at all. The staff were friendly & helpful. We suggested they replace one bedside table with an armchair; provide an extra towel to go with the two bath towels and two flannels; and have another option color for the pillow slips. Two white for the bottom pillows and 2 colored slips that match the blanket. We enjoyed this lovely, clean, charming hotel. The only bug we saw in the whole of Sydney was in the Subway restaurant around the corner from the hotel. A man walked in with one attached to his trouser leg. Ewwww! Thanks Great Southern Hotel. You guys were mint!

I booked over the internet and booked a room with no view but we were given a hotel room at the front of the hotel this room was a nice size and very clean and bright. We stayed there for 3 nights on a bed and breakfast basis (when checking in they had no knowledge of breakfast i had paid for so always print out your confirmation sheet) –The reception staff i found to be very friendly and helpful. The hotel is very close to Paddy’s Market, China Town, Central Station and Darling Harbour There is the 555 free bus you can get outside which is a loop buses that takes you to Circular Quay.

While the location was good, pretty much right in Chinatown, that is the only good thing I can say. On checking in we were confronted by a notice saying that there was a 2% surcharge on credit cards. In all our years of business travel, we have hardly ever been charged a surcharge and certainly not 2%.
The room was not inspiring - no artwork or anything to break the monotony. The toiletries consisted of one minuscule soap, a combo shampoo/conditioner (1 measly bottle) which left our hair feeling like straw, a shower cap and tissues. There was no mini bar - you had to venture down to reception to purchase anything. The room had no compendium or any hotel information at all. Pillows were uncomfortable.
We paid for breakfast vouchers, and what a disappointment - slimy eggs with uncooked white slopping around, anaemic baked beans, the most horrible sausages we have ever tasted, and something that looked like bacon but may not have been.
I was woken up the day BEFORE checkout by a call from reception telling me that we had an outstanding balance. We were quite aware of this (internet use, breakfast vouchers) and would have settled as usual on checkout. Why we had to be disturbed and told this is a mystery. I would definitely not recommend this hotel.
