2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2011

A very confusing experience. We ordered a family room for two adults and two kids (9 & 11 years) through Hotels.com. At presence we was asthonished by the very beautiful surroundings, but was a bit puzzled when we observed several people in wheelchairs - obviously very sick people surrounded by nurses and other caring persons. When we checked in I was surprised to know that we would not get a room in the hotel, but in another (new) building called the west-wing. Fair enough, it was just a two minutes walk away from the main building, but not so pleasent when you have two walk to the restaurant while the rain pours down. More substantially - the west-wing turned out to not be a hotel at all! It was simply a post-trauma recovery-center full of nurses and patients! It smelled medicines, and looked far from a hotel establishment - more like hospital. We got two connection rooms, which in fact looked like my old bedsit when I 20 years ago was studying. Very, very far from a 4 star hotel. If you are planning to visit this place, and you don’t want to experience how it will be like when you are packed away in a nursing home when you get old - be sure to get a room in the main building (or maybe it is the same there - I really don't know).

The staff in the reception gave a very variable impression. The woman in charge when we checked in looked bored, and gave me a clear impression of wanting us away. No welcomes, no smiles, no warm hospitality. I have never visited a prison, but I suspect it will be very much the same feeling. My wife and kids got silent - and looked afraid. We asked for a reservation at the restaurant at 7 p.m., but was strictly told we could get it at 7.15... (she apparantly liked to act difficult). When we later arrived at the restaurant – no one had got our reservation... but the staff was very friendly, polite and helpful - and everything worked out just fine (and there was no lack of tables at all). Maybe the woman in the reception just worked for another competing hotel - the rest of the staff did a good job, but nothing more. You get the strong feeling that they are just doing their job, and there’s no genuine passion in it.

At Hotels.com they are telling you there is a swimming pool, both indoors and outdoors. The outdoor pool is very small, but the indoor pools are simply breathtaking beautiful - one of the best spas I have visited. But be aware - the pools are not allowed for kids under 14! Hotels.com do not tell you that.

The restaurant was ok + (we had a barbecue buffet), and the breakfast was fully ecological, and of excellent quality.

To conclude: Terrible for families - great if you feel tired and sick and need a private nursing home.

This hotel was fantastic. It is a very well maintianed old building. The food was fantastic with fantastic veiws. There is a large outdoor seating area over looking the Fjord. Tnere is a gym on site which is well equipted. I would love to return with my wife for a weekend to try the spa facilities and just relax.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2010

We booked two rooms with connecting doors and were accommodated in the west wing building 100 m from the main building.
The rooms had the standard white minimalistic Scandinavian style, bathroom were big and with all necessary amenities including slippers and bathrobes. But the impression of the building was characterized by the fact that it is also a recreation center in connection with a hospital.
Service was overall ok but not always very professional. Staff members did their best but most of them were young and untrained.
We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel. Dinner was a modest buffet, which we would rather have avoided but it was the only thing available. The price was reasonable, but we would rather pay more and have the "a la carte" dinner choice which was advertised on the homepage.
Breakfast was good. The view from the restaurant and terrace was beautiful!

I took a spa treatment which was nice and enjoyed the spa resting area. We did not use the pool, as unlike other hotels use of the pool area is at extra costs at Vejlefjord.

All in all we had a pleasant stay, but were a bit disapointed by the restaurant and the rather impersonal atmosphere of the hotel.

Most hotel guests seemed to be spa lovers, as we saw a lot of them walking around in bathrobes. Probably a good choice is you are one of them, as they offer an important choice of treatment.
