“Luxury but lacks character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2013

Returning with an aim to recharge. Still impressed by the room but realise the business atmosphere did not suite our purpose this time round. Great package to enjoy an excellent accommodation but will need more incentives to return as it's hard to fire up a bit of romantic atmosphere in the room.

Enjoy the coffee machine and would appreciate a bit more choices of flavour.

Room Tip: No particular room better than the other in my opinion.

I stayed at the Realm on a business trip and was upgraded to a suite. The staff was very friendly and efficient. The hotel could do with a touch of color, as everything is grey. I think those large, nice and very well equipped rooms would look so much better with a touch of warm colors and light. Breakfast is a bit average for the price. Conveniently located close to the airport and centre.

This place was something else. Great hotel, capital letters AWESOME cafe Maple & Clove, an Aveda concept to keep you looking your best and a front of house lady who knows exactly what to do when a guest is due to go to a meeting having forgotten to pack his cufflinks: she goes to her office and finds a pair. Marvelous!

I always stay at this hotel when visiting Canberra. It is truly a 5 star hotel with everything you need in the apartment - lovely king sized bed, beautiful bathroom with separate bath and shower, a kitchen with big fridge/freezer, microwave and washing machine and dryer. The decor is modern. The lay-out of the rooms is good with lots of space.

Breakfast downstairs is great too. I always have dinner at the restaurant downstairs which serves tapas, pizzas etc and it is always good quality food with good service.

Parking in the basement is free.

I can highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Executive level (level 5) is great, but I think you pay a bit more.

We spent two nights here over the long weekend. While the hotel is comfortable, clean and convenient (which should be taken for granted), the hotel falls short of its star rating and does not really deliver for the price. The service was a bit haphazard. We were shocked to find that the tapas restaurant/bar was closed on the Saturday night (um, it's a hotel). There was no bath in our room ( necessitating a baby bath in the sink). Overall, the hotel lacks ambience. If you want a nice hotel in Canberra, stick with the Hyatt.

Third stay. Previous 2 stays I hadn't been compelled to write a review, everything was adequate without being special. My last stay though (1 night on business) was offputting and i doubt i'll be back.

For starters, I arrived at 8.30pm, asked to use the gym, and was told it was closed. Somewhat generously i replied 'OK, I'll use it in the morning' and was answered with an unapolagetic 'it's not open until 10 in the morning'. Seriously? What sort of bizarre opening hours are they? I commented about this on checking out and was told that the hours are being extended and even better the gym will be free to guests, whiuch seemed to suggest that it costs money to use the gym at present - which is really unacceptable and not inline with international hotel standards.

Second - because the gym was closed, I went for an evening jog around the area and left my door card at the desk. I got back in my running gear, asked the lady on duty (didn't catch her name) for my card and she looked at me like she'd trod in something unpleasant and said 'what?' I repeated my request, she stared at me, before the guy on duty realised the woman was a bit incompetent and gave me my card. Hopeless.

Third - i left my iphone charger on my desk asi left the office on way to airport, and needed one fairly desperately when i got to the hotel. I asked for a spare, and they brought one up - which was unfortunately an unofficial fake version and wasn't compatible with my brand new iphone 5. I phoned and asked if they had another one, and they said 'no, worry.' Figuring that the chord itself might let me charge it on a hotel PC (not having brought my laptop on this trip), i went downstairs to see what i could do. The guy on duty went out the back and got one for me, scowled and replied 'this is my own charger so make sure you bring it down when you're finished.' Seriously. A decent hotel would have a functional hotel charger in the first place, and certainly wouldn't make a big deal out of lending 'a personal charger'.

Leaving the next morning, i booked a taxi, sat inside waiting, and watched as people who hadn't booked taxis grabbed the ones turning up. There was no door man/staff member around to ensure that some sort of order was kept. I commented to the staff on duty and was met with an absolute lack of care.

Lastly - the drab colours and rather cheap details are starting to wear - too much gray is not good for the soul. A previous reviewer's use of the term 'bizarre, barren and Bauhaus' was spot on.

Canberra is frequently a frustrating place for those of us who stay in nice hotels frequently, and live in big cities where good service is taken for granted. This however was a particularly annoying stay. To the staff at the hotel - if you don't want to work in a hotel, go and find another job. Other hotels consistently manage to be better in all categories, especially the Hyatt and Diamont.

Service was professional. Warmly greeted by efficient staff. Room was enormous, modern and very comfortable. Every amenity available. Good location 10 minutes from airport. Electronic black-out blinds can be a challenge to operate!
