“Great evening”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

We visited Courgette with some friends who had not been before. The food was excellent, just as we remembered. Service was perfect too, very attentive. They gave us plenty of time to talk between courses as well.

The only thing we really miss on the menu is the warm chocolate tart that Courgette used to make about 2-3 years ago. That was hands down the best dessert in Canberra.

“A great evening”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

I was invited by a partner to attend a dinner function. The company was good, the meals were excellent, they were just the right size and the flavours were awesome. It was a fantastic night.

“Not worth it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

I would very strongly recommend not going to this restaurant. The culinary skill is excellent but Courgette misses every other aspect that makes a good restaurant.

First, I should mention the positives. This is fine dining. The courses are superbly cooked, with finesse and precision. They are complex. They are intricate. They are interesting.

But, to the negatives. There is no soul or love at Courgette. The meals are so fiddly and intricate that there is no enjoyment in eating them. The room is sterile - almost completely quiet when we visited despite being full, to the point that diners were self-conscious. The staff are prim and proper but not welcoming and endearing. Actually, the staff weren't great at all - they completely missed serving us bread while everyone else was served seconds and thirds! Getting their attention was difficult. And the meal is soooo drawn out. We couldn't understand why the last service was 7.30pm but we do now. We arrived at 7 and left a little before 11. In a buzzing restaurant, this could be great but as a couple in an almost silent room, it was an ordeal.

For context, we are from Europe and have eaten in many Michelin restaurants, where they understand how to serve an intricate dish that is exciting and . This restaurant seems to be striving for a notion of fine dining that shouldn't exist - prim, intricate, sterile, dull - a notion that epitomises Australia's (or Canberra's?) obsession with all things European. The chef is excellent but the whole package is disappointing.

Go to Aubergine instead - now that is a fantastic restaurant.

“Food made with love”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013 via mobile

We loved this restaurant - it was our first truly enjoyable meal out in Canberra after living here for two months. It was worth the wait though. Each course is beautifully balanced and presented, and bursting with flavour. Every single element on the plate worked in harmony. The ambience of the restaurant is also very nice - not too formal or pretentious, with good service and decor that's low key and relaxing and very comfortable chairs. We only had a couple of very minor criticisms. First, for people who are not very familiar with Canberra, it would be good if the website gave clearer directions on how to find the restaurant. It's in an odd location - we thought we must surely be in the wrong neighbourhood because the street was completely deserted and it was a Saturday evening. Secondly, we thought the restaurant could consider changing the cutlery for a more conventional design. They've opted for very narrow and elongated knives and folks that look great on the table but are not comfortable to eat with. Overall though, we highly recommend Courgette for special occasions that are worth a splurge.
