“Bad, dirty place compared to other YHA”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2012

Room is ok, but the bathroom & toilet is really dirty. The amount of dust gathered due to lack of cleaning is clearly visible. Disgusting hotel compared to other YHA (I have stayed in quite a few YHA hotels already). Definitely stay away from this one.

Nice place to stay. Rooms were nice and airy - plenty of space.

Kitchen was nice and tidy. Staff were nice and pleasant.

Location was great - in the middle of Canberra and a short walk from the attractions.

Would recommend!

we stayed in room 102; 15-16 Sept 12. Room clean tidy..and the hostel is clean and tidy. There are staff around about 9am starting to clean.

The hot water takes about 5 minutes to come through the men's basins and showers - what a waste of water...!!!! And probably wasted electricity in heating that 'cold run water'.

Bytes cafe is slow service for breakfast - 1 cook & server - but it works good, food is low cost & good too.

In all a clean hospitable hostel right in Canberra's centre. Walk anywhere..

Parking - be very careful - the parking is restricted at the hostels' rear. Take note of the parking warning sign on the hostel side ramp door- it is sooo true. The hours a limited.

Our room did not have a TV - we recall other rooms have had a TV???!!!...

Canberra is pretty devoid of any low cost accommodation, so YHA came to the rescue.

The location can't be beaten, it's very central, 10 minutes walk from the Greyhound terminal, and a few minutes walk to the shopping centre and supermarkets.

The staff were all very pleasant, the room and bathrooms were clean and kept clean. The kitchen could do with some work, despite notices advising old food will be thrown out, there were items still in the fridges a month past expiry.

I didn't have any issues regarding the TV being left on, despite the fact it was right outside my door. The basement bar does however reverberate through the building and I could recite the words of Eye of a Tiger clearly at Midnight.

I would happily stay here again but ask for a higher floor.

Decent Hostel in the heart of Canberra. Close to supermarkets, shops, bars, and about a 30 minute walk across the lake to the Commonwealth Parliament and government buildings. Bedroom was reasonably clean, and bathrooms were good - even had hot showers, which I haven't had in a hostel in a long time. Large kitchen with lots of space. As far as hostels / backpackers go, this is a good place to stay - just don't expect 5-star hotel luxury and you'll be fine.

On the whole the YHA in Canberra was pleasantly surprising. It was totally convenient, and very accessible and for dorm accommodation it was of a good standard. It had good facilities and was well maintained. My only issue is that the carpet smelled funny and the "doona" covers and bathrooms were dirty. There were things from previous guests under the bed and in the bathroom.

Room Tip: Some rooms have their own en suite bathrooms. If there are 3 of you sharing you can get one of those...

Nothing wrong with the hostel - it was clean, the staff were friendly, there was a big TV room, and really liked the location. My boyfriend and I were happy with our very comfortable and spacious double room (it came with free tea and coffee making facilities - a nice extra). We arrived in the late morning/early afternoon and were given a half-day discount for our bike hire. Girl working at reception was super helpful with maps and advice. Tried to use the spa in the evening, but it was freezing! A little disappointing, but it wasn't a huge deal.

My main complaint is what little value we got for our money. It was soooo expensive - we paid $100 p/n for our private room and still had to use the shared bathroom (this was the cheapest accommodation we could find in Canberra!). You had to pay extra for internet and there was no free storage! UNBELIEVABLE! My boyfriend and I had big suitcases with us and ended up having to pay about $20 to put them in lockers for the day as our bus to Melbourne didn't leave til 11p.m. Am mystified as to why YHA thinks that something as simple as luggage storage needs to be an expensive luxury. For $100 p/n, I would have expected better.

YHA Canberra is decent, but overpriced! Make sure you're aware of what all the 'extras' cost before booking.
