We stayed overnight at the Brassey at Barton in Canberra after a shopping trip from the south coast. We had previously stayed there, but had noise problems with a wedding party in the nearby rooms. This time, we asked for a quiet room and were allocated a nice room on the top floor and were not worried by any noise at all. The room was large, comfortable and well heated in the cold climate, although the placement of the television was not correct for easy viewing either from the bed or the chairs provided. A little maintenance is needed in the room - eg cracking wall in bedroom section and flaking paint in the bathroom. Also, in our room, the shower/bath tap needed some attention as it was dripping badly from the shower when the bath taps were running. However, the room was very clean and all necessary toiletries were provided with nice large bath towels. We dined in the in-house dining room for our evening meal - and were quite happy with the service and meals provided. Breakfast was included in our room rate and was served in the in-house dining room. The morning that we had breakfast, the dining room was quite cool and the hot breakfast provided in the bain maries, were not as hot as one would expect. The problem was that there were only 3 candles keeping the food warm under each container of food. It was a cold, frosty morning, so a better warming system could be used in the cold weather. We would stop at the Brassey again, as it is a convenient location, it has character and if you know the Hotel, you can ask for a room that is suitable for your purposes.
Top floor if you don't mind a long walk.
