The REX is a stale, tired, abysmal, depressing and rather weird ‘joint’. It’s not situated in a good area either with some of the local undesirables strolling through the car park. (I met one of them ‘admiring’ my car when I came back out to pick up my luggage after booking in).
The hallways are like an underground bunker. When I arrived to book in, the queue was fairly long and there was only one junior staff at the front desk. The room was basic. The room wasn’t that clean, the bedspread was dirty, the carpet could have been vacuumed better, handles on doors were sticky to touch and my suits did not fit in the wardrobe properly. I had to ask room staff to clean the dirty basin in the bathroom. I cleaned the handles myself. The air-conditioning did not seem to work properly (no instruction supplied) and the hot water did not last long. The shower head in the bathroom was too low so I had to bend down to get under it. And that bizarre notice about the fire alarm going off if you take a bath / shower while leaving the bathroom door open.
It was difficult to get a rate confirmation for the second week. The reception staff it seems has no discretion to make decisions and goes running off to the manager to resolve what would in my mind be easy questions. The administrative processes including communication between staff seem they could be improved. Staff don’t seem to make notes on the computer system and so if you get another staff member you need to explain all over again which can mean reverting to the manager who by the way never seemed to be around.
The restaurant is absolutely appalling. Food, service, decor, atmosphere, cleanliness ... everything. I heard other guests complaining whilst dining. One Indian gent was very unhappy and very vocal about his evening meal and couldn’t understand how they could get it so wrong. Other guests around me on two of the nights I was there were left starving as their meals were very late to arrive. My meals were also late but not as late as some of the others. The wait staff are pretty much inept. It is obvious they are poorly trained at customer service generally. I got the same incomplete menu (with a page missing) three times.
The REX has an outside off street car park but it isn’t great either, especially of you have a nice car and you are afraid of it getting damaged or broken into. The car spaces are a bit of a squeeze. Night lighting outside is poor and access in some areas of the car park is limited (ie along the side).
Management / owners appear to be cost cutting and would need to do a lot to bring this god forsaken hole up to par. The REX affirms my belief to book as early as possible. I would never go back. My recommendation is go elsewhere. One star at the very most.
Liked: The bed was fine, fairly central
Disliked: Service, Restaurant, Cleanliness
