The REX is a stale, tired, abysmal, depressing and rather weird ‘joint’. It’s not situated in a good area either with some of the local undesirables strolling through the car park. (I met one of them ‘admiring’ my car when I came back out to pick up my luggage after booking in).

The hallways are like an underground bunker. When I arrived to book in, the queue was fairly long and there was only one junior staff at the front desk. The room was basic. The room wasn’t that clean, the bedspread was dirty, the carpet could have been vacuumed better, handles on doors were sticky to touch and my suits did not fit in the wardrobe properly. I had to ask room staff to clean the dirty basin in the bathroom. I cleaned the handles myself. The air-conditioning did not seem to work properly (no instruction supplied) and the hot water did not last long. The shower head in the bathroom was too low so I had to bend down to get under it. And that bizarre notice about the fire alarm going off if you take a bath / shower while leaving the bathroom door open.

It was difficult to get a rate confirmation for the second week. The reception staff it seems has no discretion to make decisions and goes running off to the manager to resolve what would in my mind be easy questions. The administrative processes including communication between staff seem they could be improved. Staff don’t seem to make notes on the computer system and so if you get another staff member you need to explain all over again which can mean reverting to the manager who by the way never seemed to be around.

The restaurant is absolutely appalling. Food, service, decor, atmosphere, cleanliness ... everything. I heard other guests complaining whilst dining. One Indian gent was very unhappy and very vocal about his evening meal and couldn’t understand how they could get it so wrong. Other guests around me on two of the nights I was there were left starving as their meals were very late to arrive. My meals were also late but not as late as some of the others. The wait staff are pretty much inept. It is obvious they are poorly trained at customer service generally. I got the same incomplete menu (with a page missing) three times.

The REX has an outside off street car park but it isn’t great either, especially of you have a nice car and you are afraid of it getting damaged or broken into. The car spaces are a bit of a squeeze. Night lighting outside is poor and access in some areas of the car park is limited (ie along the side).

Management / owners appear to be cost cutting and would need to do a lot to bring this god forsaken hole up to par. The REX affirms my belief to book as early as possible. I would never go back. My recommendation is go elsewhere. One star at the very most.

Liked: The bed was fine, fairly central
Disliked: Service, Restaurant, Cleanliness

Stayed at the Rex for only one night and found it rather indifferent. You can't book directly from their website - technical issues I was told by the receptionist. Booked through one of the last minute websites.

Their pricing structure is quite confusing, you pay $40.00 more if you want a twin room even though I was travelling with an 11 year old child. Their excuse was that it takes more time to service a twin room than a double, however I then pointed out that their family rates were cheaper. 1 double and one single in the room. Their response, the owners sets the rates and neither the manager or the staff have any control over the prices. Weird...

Ate dinner in the restaurant and they only had two waiters on duty and a full restaurant of people. People were complaining about not getting served and we waited for approx one hour to get our meal. Same the next morning with the buffet running out of hot food. In their defence it was really busy but they should be used to large crowds.

Room was pretty basis, heater would not work properly and I ended up turning it off as only cold air was pouring out. Bed was ok - and hot water was running out fast so very quick shower. Room needed a good vacuum as lots of dust and lint in the corners and there was a huge red looking stain on the bedspread. (looked like blood)

Staff very friendly and wanted to assist but think they are dealing with cost cutting owners who really have no idea how to deal with customers.

Not our first choice but Canberra heavily booked due to NSW school sports events being held so huge demand and not much choice. Next year would book a lot earlier and try elsewhere.

stayed in a twin room. the room was old, but still alright (clean tidy etc). shower took a while (1-2min) to heat up. toilet was a bit hard to flush (button needed a really hard push).
they're in the process of doing some reservations so you may get some slight morning noise when garden/construction work begins.
what did make up for a lot of older things was the buffet breakfast (if you get it ) I stayed for a week and they kept it varied and nicely cooked. (although one morning there was a crowd before us and they ate up almost everything so the poor kitchen took a while to replenish the trays)

Booked one night at the Rex as a stopover on way back to Syd from the snow, and as soon as we arrived we noticed problems... First, the wotif description said "renovated" rooms - the rooms are faarrr from it. I've heard the hotel is being very, very slowly renovated, and until it has been completed, I wouldn't recommend staying at the Rex. The good points we did make note of however was the large bed and WiFi.... that's about it.
So if you're passing through Canberra, then this may be a good choice if you're not looking to fork out the $ and just want a bed to sleep in, but otherwise I'd look elsewhere. Oh, and if you're taller than 5 and a half feet (I'm 6'4) then don't expect to have a comfortable shower unless you're a contortionist and can fold yourself in half... the shower head in our room was mounted to a lowered part of the ceiling making it extremely awkward....

This hotel was a little bit older than some might like but the service was impeccable. We were greeted by very polite and respectful staff who then advised us on the best places to eat etc with maps. The concierge was most obliging. The room itself was spacious enough and had all the amenities you would need without being posh.

  • Liked — The people - the concierge was wonderful
  • Disliked — The location was too far to walk to the restaurants
